Reports say Rasheed Wallace is in San Antonio today

Dont think I've seen this anywhere yet but according to reports, Rasheed Wallace is in town today.

Encouraging considering I've been reading he wanted to stay in the east.  What does everyone think about this potential signing?  I think hes about as good of a big man as we can get.  I have beautiful dreams about Duncan and Sheed starting down low.

I just commented on this in rik’s post, but I’ll add to it.

I don’t see Sheed selecting SA when we’re only gonna be able to give him the MLE. Boston, Cleveland and Orlando are all also looking; and I think each can pay as much or more, and they’re all in the conference he’s publicly said he wants to stay in.

One could argue his road would be easier in the West

Its not five years ago, it would essentially be Us, LA and Dallas; I think there is a gulf b/t The Spurs/Lakers and Dallas as well, Houston has too many injury issues, PHX is dismantled, Portland is still a year or so away. Whereas in the East, Boston,Orlando and Cleveland are all going to be brutal.

Id say our biggest competition for him, if indeed we are a real alternative, would be Cleveland; he’s just what they need as well

An interesting thing about him going to the Cavs would be their frontline. Ilgauskas, Shaq, Varejao, and Wallace. If, in fact, they can sign both Varejao and Wallace. Big Z and Big Snack are not young and are fairly fragile.

Denver, who surprised us all. I spent all season discounting them, I won’t anymore. There’s also Utah, and who knows what to expect from New Orleans, especially if they are unable to dismantle the team due to financial concerns.

1. Lakers

3. Houston
4. Denver
5. Portland
6. Utah
7. Dallas
8. New Orleans

I also reserve the right to change that, depending on how free agency plays out. I can’t even do the East until FA is over with.

Well, it’s difficult to calculate their chances since it’s not possible to divide by zero.

Neither. Irrational numbers can’t be expressed as a fraction, such as pi. Imaginary numbers incorporate the square root of minus one and resulted in many smart ass answers from yours truly. Dividing by zero has no meaning – can’t be done. I have no idea why I remember this stuff, as numerous other mathematical terms/theories have escaped my brain happily.

by CapHill on Jun 30, 2009 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And there you have it, pollackj, I can’t give you any actual numbers that represent Houston’s chances, but I’ve got it on very good authority that even though they can’t be calculated, they’re not good.

Which is really a shame. Love Yao, love H-town, love battier, love the way they gamely fought agaist LA. Love it all.

Cleveland and Boston not options?

Someone asked Ric Bucher on twitter yesterday about him coming out with the report saying that Sheed’s decision would come down to San Antonio and Orlando. He responded:

@ClevelandOwnz Those are top two. Heard Dal and Hou also called. Cle is not in mix. KG is calling, but Sheed won’t do Boston. about 23 hours ago from web in reply to ClevelandOwnz

So in reply to SgtinManusArmy’s post, if you can trust Ric Bucher, you can throw Cleveland and Boston out of the mix, and suddenly it isn’t a pipe dream anymore.

Sheed would put us on par with the Lakers. My one problem, signing Sheed leaves us no money to get a good bench. Our lineups with a full 14 man roster (as the Spurs usually carry 14 or 15 guys) would be:

Starters:
C-Duncan/Wallace
PF- Wallace/Duncan
SF- Jefferson
SG- Mason
PG- Parker

Bench:
C/F Bonner
SG Ginobili
PG/SG Hill
PF- Blair
PG/SG McClinton
(this ends the people who are currently actually playing for San Antonio, the next area is for Euro people i presume the Spurs will use this year)
PF James Gist
PF Ian Mahinmi

That’s it. That’s all there is. Not even enough for a 14 man roster. All I could manage was 12 people. Note how we have 4 backup PF, but no backup SF. Note also that 3 of our 7 bench players, have no NBA game experience. And Mahinmi only has 6 games worth of NBA experience. Sure we’d have a fantastic starting lineup, but that bench is inexperienced and unproven.

If we don’t get a better bench, we are not going to be a true championship threat. We need probably two SF. One of which has to be fairly good so that if Jefferson goes down (god forbid) our season won’t be over. Bowen coming back would only give us a decent defender off the bench, I don’t trust him to start or be the true backup to RJ. If Finley comes back, I would feel so much better.

Hate him all you want, but Finley did give us nearly ten points a game last year and shot 41% from 3-point range. Not to mention he can play both SG and SF. Finley coming back would give us a much better SF situation, and if Bowen returns as well then we’re set. However, I have a bad feeling that Finley will not return.

Here is what i think the spurs should have there roster like (assuming we get pachulie in free agency).

Starters:
C-Duncan
PF- Blair
SF- Jefferson
SG- McClinton
PG- Parker

Bench:
C-Bonner/Ian
SG-Ginobili
PG/SG-Hill
PF- Pachulie
SF-Mason

I could only come up with 11 players on our roster. I guess the rest might come from the d league. Maybe some from free agency.

Here’s our current roster, with presumed rookies in italics.

Parker/Hill
Manu/Mason/Hairston
RJ/M. Williams
Mahinmi/Blair/Gist
Duncan/Bonner

Now let’s add Wallace to the mix at PF(even though TD,Wallace and Mahinmi could all play C if needed), and assume Finley comes back to fill out our SF lineup.

Parker/Hill
Manu/Mason/Hairston
RJ/M. Williams/Finley
Wallace/Blair/Gist
Duncan/Mahinmi/Bonner

That’s 14 – now all that’s missing is a 3rd(veteran) PG, which I’m sure Pop will be pursuing just in case George isn’t ready by the playoffs.

A whole lotta (maybe too much) youth on that roster for Pop.

Just thinking that one of Blair, Gist, and Hairston would be waived/Torrosized, and the same for either Mahinmi or Bonner. With those two roster spots going to the kind of cheap pick-ups our FO seems to make from time to time.

Oh, and replace Wallace with McDyess.

I’d much rather have McDyess. Cheap guy who does what we need. He has good offense, still a great rebounder, and plays some good D. And with the leftover MLE, we can get a cheap PG or SF.

I was thinking, if torosized is to supersized, it means it has to be an upgrade, which being in the Toros instead of the Spurs isn’t. However, if you use Tororized, you have a negative-sounding connotation like tenderized or, gasp, terrorized. But I like torosized as well.

Interesting. I arrived at Torosized as a blend of “downsized” and “Toros”. So, the last thing I was thinking about was “supersized”.

really?

on par with the Lakers, just because of RJ and Sheed? C’mon. I like the Spurs, best class act in almost all of professional sports, but you have to be a realist.

Since we’re dealing with hypotheticals, let’s assume all of the Lakers key players they want back come back: Trevor Ariza, Lamar Odom, and Shannon Brown.

As has already been established here, RJ is great at nothing and good at everything. So Ariza can’t guard him? And then when the Lakers toss in Walton, the PF in a SF’s body, who guards him in the post?

And then there’s Sheed. If you remember when he played in Portland, the Lakers countered him with a mobile, active SF turned PF named…. Robert Horry. (Spurs did the same when Sheed played in Detroit.) The Lakers have two players to handle that; Odom and of course Gasol (who made an even more athletic and better shooter in Lewis look like the overpaid chump that he is).

Then of course you’ve got the regulars… Parker vs. Fish, Kobe vs. Mason/Ginobli (note it takes two players to even match Kobe), and Duncan vs. Bynum (or Gasol, if Odom comes in). The Lakers depth is still a problem for most teams to match, and you yourself say your bench is not good enough, and will depend on 3 rookies.

Spurs are still the 2nd best in the West, IMO, because of Popp, Duncan, Manu, and Parker, but RJ and Sheed does not put you on par, especially if you’re not even confident of your bench. Remember this last tidbit… most playoff roster rotations are set to 8 men, maybe 9 on occassion. The Lakers this offseason routinely used a solid 10 man rotation. Not because they HAD to, but because they COULD.

wishful thinking

Manu injured, I’ll give you that.

Ariza and Bynum injured? You have to give us our credit to. Your “Well, one of our key players was injured, so you cheated us.” holds no water when two starters and important rotation players were also injured.

by tandur on Jun 29, 2009 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can have your credit. You had a couple of nice pieces out when we met last year. A pair of good role players. But we had a star all but gone. The player we go to in the clutch, when we had to have a basket was literally hobbling around.

So, in chess terminology, while you had lost a couple of your pawns, our castle could barely move … and someone gave you a bishop in the middle of the game.

I’m sorry, I just couldn’t help myself from bringing up Gasol. And I was really doing so well up to that point too. : )

I think a package of Findog + Bonner + someone else (Mason? Hill?) might work for Camby, especially if the Clips are looking to dump salary. Findog was considering retiring; maybe the Spurs could pull the “Keith Van Horn” shenanigans and have him pick up his option for use to make the numbers work in the trade, then he agrees to a buyout after the trade

It’d be a shame to give up Mason and/or Hill, but we’re talking about making a run at a ‘chip. Can’t afford to be too sentimental if we’re talking about picking up an all-league defender at PF/C.

Well Id hang onto Hill

but if McClinton can really shoot as well as they say, perhaps he could fill that role, but RMJ was pretty clutch at some points last season.

So the question would be, who gives us a greater chance to win: Sheed or Camby? So if its even close, you might as well take the guy who only costs cash money

Blaming it on the fact that he was playing PG does seem like a bit of a cop-out. But at the same time, I think it’s quite possible that putting him in a different role, where he’s perhaps taken out of his comfort zone, or being tasked with thinking about setting up plays instead of concentrating only on his own man and shooting — that all of that could contribute to what we saw from him after the switch to PG duties.

Ugh, I just hope that he isn’t called on to do any of that next year.

hence why I want McDyess instead

McDyess will actually play low instead of “camping out at his favorite spot, the 3pt line”. Mainly because McDyess can’t hit 3’s. But we don’t need a 3-point shooting big, we need one that can a lot of rebounds, play good D, and if we’re lucky, have some kind of offensive game. McDyess fits all three requirements; and in the case of the third, he has plenty of offense; and he does so at a cheaper price than Sheed.

When the Wallaces were together in Detroit, Rasheed was usually the one who drew the premier matchup. He guarded Duncan, Shaq, etc and made them work for their buckets. I only watched one Detroit game this season, so I don’t know if he still has that in him, but at least he was an elite defender.

Sheed

Sheed can defend, especially for Pop. He plays within the team concept. He has terrific offensive skills but doesn’t demand the ball. His emotional issues would be less of an issue with our team than any other, one would think, and despite this he already has 1 ring.

With regard to Mason, didn’t it strike you guys that basically the problem is that Mason is a dribble-shoot player rather than a catch-and-shoot player? Don’t get me wrong, I like Mason, but he needs the ball in his hands to be effective.

Really? I think Mason can’t create worth a crap. He does much better as a catch and shoot player in my opinion.

No, he’s no point guard. He doesn’t create for anyone else. I wasn’t saying that, just that he didn’t seem to shoot the ball particularly well on catch-and-shoot plays.

His best move is dribble up, go around the pick, hard dribble and fire the 3. He’s more Jason Terry than Brent Barry is what I mean.

Ah my bad. In that case I do see what you’re saying. He gets himself in rhythm when he comes off the dribble but I still like him as a catch and shoot guy too.

Slowpoke, welcome to PtR! Thanks for joining. Your thoughts on Sheed are much appreciated. We’ve been fighting/politely bantering/arguing over whether R. Wallace would be a good addition to the Spurs for a while now. It’s good to get feedback from new places.

As for Mason, I’d agree that he likes that moving-right-to-left-behind-a-screen-pull-up-jumper-from-three-point-land, but I don’t know if I’d say that he needs the ball in his hands to be effective.

Absolutely! I have a membership on a really good site that notifies you when it’s your move, allows you to flip the board around and move the pieces around without actually making your move. I haven’t logged in for a while, but I’ll search and let you know tomorrow.

That it, unless you have one you like that you’re already a member of.

The Phoenix game winner, and the Laker game winner both come to mind as being catch and shoot. I think is good at both

Just found the site on draft night. I was stoked about the players we got and wanted to see if there was any local sites dedicated to the Spurs…and there y’all were. The fact that the Spurs FO is making an effort to go out in a blaze of glory is exciting by itself. Given our small market situation, they deserve major props.

They can take their pick from any of these.

Oh, BTW, I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but I’ve always hated Richard Jefferson. My nickname for him has always been “Little Lord F___pants” because he comes off as a rich kid who’s had everything handed to him. I’m not saying anyone else should react that way to him and I’m sure it reveals my own neuroses more than anything.

Anyway, I am adjusting, and will no doubt be ready to root for him by summer’s end…

Never been much of a fan, but that’s likely b/c I’ve never really seen him play unless it’s been against the Spurs.

I think we’ll get comfortable cheering his talents easily enough. It didn’t take us long with Roger Mason, and he didn’t play in any Olympics that I’ve heard of.

I don’t hate players just for playing against the Spurs.

There’s a tiny handful of players that would cause me to actually turn against the Spurs if they added them…Kobe…Ray Allen…Stephon Marbury. That might be it, actually. I was talking to a friend about not liking Derek Fisher until he pointed out that he is exactly the kind of player I would love if he played for any other team. And I realized he was right, he seems perfectly nice, he’s a professional, smart, and obviously can shoot the lights out. What’s not to like?

And I like RJ’s game. He just comes off as pompous in interviews, I have always thought…I’m probably being irrational.

hmm I don’t know about Fisher. Dirty player IMO. His elbow cost us big time. But he can definitely knock em down.

by joe20 on Jun 29, 2009 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I noticed that Fisher didn’t bug me too much when he played for the Jazz.

I’ll begrudgingly concede that he’s got crunch time chops. But that’s as far as I’ll go.

No Rasheed then , just a good regular season ONLY AGAIN

Rasheed Wallace , would help Duncan down low ( Duncan don’t need no more guy’s who are getting older ) . The Lakers, Portland, New Orleans, and mostly Denver are better then the spurs , and that’s only in the WEST . The spurs DEFENSE is no good. They used to be good 2 years ago. But getting letting Kurt Thomas, and Oberto go was a good move. Neither of those 2 are young no more. But If the spurs can resign Drew Gooden, and add Richard Jefferson, and add Rasheed Wallace , They would be elite again, after 2 years .

Did you really just say New Orleans is better than the Spurs? And imply that Drew Gooden is a good defender?

You’re funny.
