Thoughts from a Snubbed Blair Fan
Dear Spurs Fans:
Hello. I am a lifelong Pitt basketball fan who is feeling very snubbed right now. I thank the Spurs for ending the free fall that accompanied Dejuan Blair's draft status last night. I am excited to see that so many Spurs fans are excited for his arrival. My take on Dejuan's game (after watching him for around 80 games the last two years).
- Obviously, the thing that everyone talks about is his ability to rebound. Rebounding seems to be about a lot of things: reach, jump, desire, positioning, etc. His reach has been covered ad nauseum; it's long. He isn't a great, explosive athlete, although he can finish with authority. His desire is top notch when it comes to getting loose balls. But what is really impressive is his positioning. He has described watching shots in the air and seeing the trajectory so that he can try and predict what the ball is going to do. He has an uncanny ability to do this. Also, his hands are as big as the basketball itself, and they are very soft as well. His rebounding rates were no accident; he's the best college rebounder of the decade. Also much has been written about rebounding translating well into the pros. WIth all of these factors, the Spurs have gotten a player who is truly excellent at one thing.
- Something less talked about is his ability in the low post. This will undoubtedly be tougher for him as an undersized 4 in the league, but he still has the ability here, and he consistently took it to guys who were much bigger than him in college. With his penchant for grabbing offensive rebounds, plus 3-4 legitimate post moves, he can start to score a bit immediately in the league.
- He needs to work on his face-up game. There isn't much to add to this; he's not a good shooter from 15 feet. He needs to work on this. He knows this. He has the desire to improve, and him being slighted will only improve his drive.
- His defense isn't great. I think this can be attributed to a lot of things. He was the biggest body (not tallest of course) on the court in almost every game he played at Pitt, and he got some fouls called on him for this. Plus, he has a penchant for stupid fouls, especially on the stupid hedging we would have him do out on the perimeter. He was always a foul concern, which I think impacted how he played interior defense. He has the intelligence and the heart to play good defense, but its a work in progress.
- Another thing that is overlooked, and a way in which he could contribute immediately, is his interior passing skills. He's got great vision on the low block. He's very unselfish and is willing to make the extra pass for the easy bucket. This might be my favorite aspect of his game.
- His attitude is top notch. He's confident and easygoing. He's always got a big smile on his face. And yet, he's still an intense competitor who often feels like he has a chip on his shoulder. It's a delicate balance that he's able to pull off rather well.
- Edited: I can't believe I forgot another aspect of his game. He's extremely agile. While on the defensive end he's not great in the post, he is really active in passing lanes. Look at his number of steals in his 2 years of college ball. Outstanding for someone his size, who plays his position. It did lead to a few of his dumb fouls, but the upside on defense is there, I believe it.
In short, I know Spurs fans are excited to have him. I just wanted to stoke those fires a bit. Plus, you've got a guy who will be happy to visit sick kids in the hospital, sign autographs until the day ends, and appear in local car commercials until you get sick of him. And this guy somehow falls to the 37th pick. I almost went into a rant here about how awful the NBA is. I mean, c'mon, I live in Pittsburgh. We don't have a team. The only enjoyment I get here is seeing guys from my alma mater succeed in the League, which hasn't happened in my lifetime. Our best NBA player is Mark Blount. But I'll stop my rant.
Dejuan, I hope you love San Antonio, I hope their fans love you back, and I hope DirecTV takes my credit card to buy the NBA League Pass. And Spurs fans, I hope that you'll allow me to join your bandwagon.

Welcome
We are glad to have you and Mr. Blair. I hope he ends up being the best Panther to ever put on a NBA uniform. If he can take that good attitude and learn from a really good coach and hall of fame players he’ll do just fine.

welcome to PtR
Hope I see more from you on here.
I’m excited about Blair and since I’m a Notre Dame and WVU fan, I saw plenty of Blair tearing up my Big East Teams. Add in one of the best, if not the best, coaching staff in the NBA and a legendary PF to mentor him in Tim Duncan and this kid should develop into a very good PF.

Great job and welcome. All I can say as a lifetime Spurs fan born in SA is that you picked the right NBA bandwagon to jump on.
Did we really just add a player good enough to be guarded by Bruce Bowen?

i visited family in Pitt last summer and got laughed at when i asked that….I wanted to see if anyone wanted to drive to philly because the spurs were going to play the nest night (possibly our worst loss of the season)…Pitt is all about Steelers, Penguins and Pirates and then college….
turns out Pitt to Philly isn’t a close drive either…….

Yeah, it’s crazy that those two places are in the same state. Philly is part of the Northeast and Pittsburgh is part of the Midwest. I don’t think most people from Pittsburgh like anything from Philly.

The only good things about Philly...
1. LeSean McCoy.
2. Philadelphia Union (MLS franchise starting play next season).
3. I-76 (the PA turnpike) to get out of there ASAP.

That’s true. So unless you need a playoff game victory or a Gino’s cheesesteak, avoid Philly like the plague. Which is an ironic thing to say, since I’d bet money that spending time IN Philly would be pretty much a guarantee that you’d contract the plague.

Well...
I was a Sixers fan around 1986, when Sir Charles was just starting to play well. I went to a game, he winked at me, as a 5 year old kid that was the best feeling ever. He became my favorite player.
I also had various attempts at rooting for the Cavs, but now I’m furious that they didn’t draft Sam Young at 30. He would have been a perfect complement to LBJ.
I’ve been trying to jumpstart an interest in the NBA for years. I tried to follow the Hornets because I knew Chris Paul was going to be the truth. It didn’t take. I needed one of my guys to be drafted by someone.
Hence, my new Spurs adoration.

When Blair is faced with a challenge then he goes all out and dominates. As a UConn grad, I hated to play Pitt due to the fact that the MSM always touted how great of a front line we had and how we should win the inside game. I knew that Blair would take this challenge and come out with fire in his eyes. He almost always went after Thabeet with a fury and Thabeet usually ended up on the floor in pain or on the bench with a shaken confidence.

A big hearty welcome to PTR. :)
I can’t say I regret that he got drafted later, though I get your disappointment on his big day.
Maybe the Spurs being fortunate enough to land Blair is an act of providence for both parties!
Not too many rookies get the chance to play alongside an all-time great and the best PF ever in TD. He will see humility, fundamentals and unflappableness. Alongside Tony, he will be awed by the craftiness and the untouchable speed and ability. On the floor with Manu, he will be witness to a competitor more fierce than he ever imagined with a game and mentality that oozes pure love of the game and its spirit.
Your boy will have fun. First lesson, learn to “hate” the lakers and you can add to that list as the season goes on :P

exactly. Thing is, I like Howard a lot more because he is younger and he can still develop a more refined offensive game. He has a better attitude. Amare will suck on defense until he retires.

Thanks for setting me straight on this. Tomas, you’re correct, Amare’s offensive game is plenty refined; whereas Howard’s is still infantile. LZ and Chilai, I remember now that the most Stat will be capable of, defensively speaking, is speaking about playing defense.

I dunno—it seems like guys are either good offensively or they are not, just like rebounding (I do think guys can improve their defense just by getting a better attitude and playing harder).
Howard reminds me more of Dikembe Mutombo on offense than he does Shaq. I think he’ll always suck (relatively speaking of course) on that end; he just doesn’t have the knack, touch, or instincts for putting the ball in the basket. He’ll score some because he’s so physically awesome and stands in the paint, but I don’t think he’ll ever be a guy you can rely on to go get you 30 points.

I think 1-on-1 defense is harder to teach, but players can definitely learn team defense [if they are smart enough and want to]. Amare has never shown any interest in solid team defense.

I think you might be right about Howards offense.
However, rebounding AND defense are effort and IQ both of which can be inculcated if there is a want. Not just defense imo.

It’s funny that you mention Mark Blount. I read this article at SI.com a few years back and I remember gleaning from in the idea that people either have or do not have a “rebounding instinct.” There are people (Mark Blount is one example) who look like they should be great rebounders based on size, strength, height, and athleticism, who simply suck at it. Then there are people like Dennis Rodman and Charles Barkley, who are just good at getting rebounds. I think that the initial evidence is that Blair is in the second group.
