WOW

We got a great steal with Dejuan Blair. This guy can rebound and help timmy out. It would of been great to get danny green to bad we got close to getting him.

Big Bad Dejuan

He’s going to frustrate a lot of big men in the NBA when they can’t go through or around him.

Of course he is, because we all know that Timmeh is a PF, not a C. :)

Well we coudl start duncan at center and Dejuan at the pf. Then again theres still free agency. Either away i think Dejuan is going to be suiting up for the spurs this upcoming season.

I think he’ll be better as a bench player. I’d really like a legit 7-footer. I don’t care if it’s Rasho(in fact, I’d pull the trigger that quickly)

That post someone linked to in the open thread said he was a “legendary college rebounder”. That’s something.

by GoSpursGo32 on Jun 25, 2009 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

Blair...

…reminds me of a bigger (heavier) and better Malik Rose, but MUCH better offensively. Since the Rose deal, we have been missing a banging 4 with long arms. I think he can guard 5s also (using those freakishly long arms to push them away from the hoop). Malik did that well also.

by spurchief on Jun 25, 2009 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

Yes, he is shorter than the ideal, but he played exclusively in the paint in college, often against taller (but not bigger) guys. And he totally owned Thabeet in the Big East.

by CapHill on Jun 25, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

The funny part is that in a few years (when Blair is the new Millsap / David Lee / Brandon Bass), Pop and RC will get huge props for another 2nd round steal. He fell into their laps. Those guys would have been crucified on the Riverwalk if they had not taken him at 37.

Draft Express.

Looking at the post production of the players on our list, Blair’s productivity was impossible to ignore. He posted the highest FG% (59%) and the highest PPP (1.12) of any player on our list in back to the basket situations. Standing 6’7, Blair displayed incredible strength in overcoming his height disadvantage, on a nightly basis. However, he would be well served to improve his jumper to help compensate for the issues he’s bound to run into trying to score against bigger and more athletic players in the NBA on a nightly basis, which could be tough given that his .2 jump shots per game rank last in our sample. He also isn’t a great finisher around the rim on non-post up situations, ranking 4th worst in that category.

I like that guys potential. McClinton never impressed me though…..We could have drafted your ankle though twice with our next two picks and I’d still consider this draft a success. Blair? At 37?? I’m jealous you get to see him in the summer league.

I know this is eating into my material for tomorrow, but damn, I’m excited about the summer league.

Hill, Ian, Gist, Williams, Blair, McClinton
I hope Hairston and Nando De Colo (I doubt he will be there)
I talked to Eric Dawson tonight and he will be there. I’m stoked.

He’s been with the Toros a couple years. He was out hurt all last year. He got elbowed in the arm and it tore his bicep. Crazy shit. Anyway, I knew he was somebody with some talent that the Toros had been sitting on for a while.

I talked to him tonight, got his story on the injury, and he said he was going to be in Vegas. I don’t think he’s a serious contender for a roster spot with the Spurs this year, but I think he is somebody they are developing.

Chad Ford
Nando De Colo, G, France

De Colo was the big surprise at the camp. NBA scouts have been following him for a couple of years, and a number of NBA execs reported that he looked good in the group workouts in Minnesota last week. But he was borderline spectacular at the Eurocamp.

He torched Mills’ team on Day 1, leading his team to a 20-point blowout. And his production (13 points, 4 assists, 4 steals) didn’t tell the whole story — his floor vision, pacing and defense dictated the course of the whole game.

De Colo kept it up in a second game Saturday and two more Sunday. He looked like the best pure point guard in the camp.

Scouts love his size and swagger, and he really shot the lights out during camp, making 65 percent from the field. While those who watched him in France all year worry he lacks the lateral quickness to defend the quicker guards in the NBA, he seemed to hold his own against Mills and, to a lesser extent, Beverley. De Colo was the other guy who looked like he could be a legit late-first-round prospect, with a few caveats. First, the word in the camp was that De Colo might have jumped the gun and signed a pro contract in Europe, which could keep him out of the league for a few years. Second, several GMs wanted to go back and take a closer look at his game film from this year. De Colo was up and down all year, and they want to get a better look at how his season went.

But overall, no one helped his stock more than De Colo. He went from a borderline second-round prospect to getting some legit buzz in the late-first to early-second rounds.

You know what impresses me most about De Colo? His passing. He has the ability to see guys. He doesn’t do the Brent Barry “I’m going to act like I don’t see you but I really see you no look pass”, he does the REAL no look pass. He’s got instincts. Trust me, the dude is a baller. He might not have the athleticism to play in the NBA, but he will be a superstart somewhere.

Amazing the Spurs picked someone in the second round who might actually play more than garbage time next season. This has been a great week. I hope the Spurs follow this up with a solid pickup for the MLE.

I just watched Buford video and had to come back to say McClinton probably won’t be a Toro. Buford talks about him playing off the ball with Hill or Tony. Hearing how enthused he is about McClinton’s shooting has me a lot more optimistic about him. He also says he is an excellent defender which I’m willing to take his word on. I recommend watching it.

New Hypothetical
PG: Parker, Hill
SG: Mason, Manu, McClinton
SF: RJ, FInley, Toro Representative
PF: Gist, Blair, MLE 4 Buford wants to sign
C: Duncan, Ian, Bonner

That is 15 and then possibly Bowen or Oberto back.

If McClinton can be Steve Kerr with defense, then he should definitely play. Sometimes the Spurs just need someone to come off the bench who can fill the cup.
