Trading into the first round?

As we all know, our Spurs don't have any first-round picks in the draft this year.  But, because they have 3 second-rounders and quite a few other tradeable assets, there's been a lot of speculation about possibly moving into the first round. So, just out of curiosity, I thought it would be fun to find out what everyone thinks the Spurs should do.

Star-divide

Tradeable Assets:

3 Second Round Draft Picks: 37, 51, 53
Marcus Williams
Ian Mahinmi
George Hill
Michael Finley*
Matt Bonner [ohpleaseohpleaseohplease]
Roger Mason
Fab Oberto
Bruce Bowen
Kurt Thomas
Manu Ginobili
Rights to: James Gist, Tiago Splitter

First Round Draft Schedule

1 L.A. Clippers
2 Memphis
3 Oklahoma City
4 Sacramento
5 Washington
6 Minnesota
7 Golden State
8 New York
9 Toronto
10 Milwaukee
11 New Jersey
12 Charlotte
13 Indiana
14 Phoenix
15 Detroit
16 Chicago
17 Philadelphia
18 Minnesota (from Miami)
19 Atlanta
20 Utah
21 New Orleans
22 Dallas
23 Sacramento (from Houston)
24 Portland
25 Oklahoma City (from San Antonio)
26 Chicago (from Denver via Oklahoma City)
27 Memphis (from Orlando)
28 Minnesota (from Boston)
29 L.A. Lakers
30 Cleveland

So my question is... who is our best bet to trade with, and what should we be willing to give up? What's the ideal draft position to get into without giving up too much?

The only guy I think they should trade up for is Sam Young and only if he slips to around 23. Moving up any higher might cost us too much.

I like Sam Young too, and possibly, Earl Clark.

Also if Hasheem Thabeet some how slips to 5 then I’d go for broke

Recced to that 7'3" tall giant

I see a huge benefit for the Spurs getting anyone after about 4….getting a good player locked into the rookie scale shores up a spot for the rest of the Duncan window and possibly the Manu window…. a good roleplayer for 2 million per is a steal…in the later half of the first round its only about 1 million (see George Hill)….i wish we had 4 guys on the roster at that scale because then we can negotiate with manu and go after a good trade or FA….i’ll be satisfied if we get into the end of the first round and steal Young, Casspi, or Jerebko though….

by BlaseE on Jun 22, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Casspi is the only feasible one

IMO. What could we possibly give to get into the lottery? It would probably cost us a future 1st rounder to even get in the late 20s to get a shot at Casspi

not necessarily….

Varner on 48MoH listed about 10-15 1st round picks that are being shopped right now….
It could be possible to outright buy one from a team without trading anything. We could take on a player like Antonio Daniels for New Orleans who desperately needs to shed some weight if he brings a pick with him. I think they have the 21st. The Wolves have 3 first rounders and the new FO could get worried about all that youth or making the wrong choice and try to package one with Miller or some other contract. Some teams may just want our second rounders over their first rounders because the draft is weak and they can draft a foreign player to let play in Europe and not pay him anything until 2010 passes. The Spurs have lots of options. The only thing we can’t do on draft day is trade Finley because of his player termination option. I expect our FO to be very aggressive and get us into the first round. I don’t think they were happy about settling for Gooden after all of their big deals for players like Camby and Salmons fell through last year. They aren’t going to let it happen again.

saw this on hoopshype

“According to an NBA source, super active Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn has offered Mike Miller to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Chris Kaman. The Clippers shot down that trade, but countered with Marcus Camby. DraftExpress.com”

If our FO is still really wanting Camby, they could possibly work a three way trade.

Buy a draft pick?

Im not sure what you mean by that, as far as I know that isnt allowed. Are you using “buy” to mean taking on a junk contract in order to get the pick? I dont know that that would be wise if it hamstrings us for the 2010 bonanza.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on Jun 23, 2009 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, you can buy picks from other teams. The Suns have sold their picks to the Blazers a couple times in the last few years. I think they actually buy the rights to the player after he is drafted, but the original team makes a proxy pick for the buying team.

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jun 23, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So they wouldnt have to trade any assets?

Its not like the NFL where team A says draft this guy for us at no 20 and we’ll give you our 22nd plus this guy or that pick?

I watch the draft every year, maybe Ive missed it, but I cant recall that happening

They can do either. Go find the trade details on how the Blazers got the Rudy Fernandez pick.

From wikipedia:

On June 28, 2007, Fernández was taken 24th overall in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, who subsequently traded his draft rights along with James Jones to the Portland Trail Blazers for cash.

So, not only did they purchase the pick, they also purchased a player.

I never looked into it but I asked this to Timothy Varner:

Tim, do you see a way where we keep our 2nd round picks but use our expiring contracts to get a 1st round pick? Finley is the only player we can’t trade before July 1st, right? New Orleans at 21 seems like an option if we were willing to take on Posey, Daniels (solves our backup PG problems), or Peterson? Also, do you think the Spurs are so aggressive this off season that they would try to get more than 1 pick in the first round if possible?

and his reply:

Yes. yes, and yes.

The Spurs could simply buy a pick, for example.

I’m not sure about more than one first, but I don’t think it’s unthinkable. But there are only so many roster spots. Because of that the Spurs would trade their seconds or draft and stash.

That’s where I got the idea from.

Should be an interesting draft

Im not sure who theyd be gunning for, outside of Casspi, but the vibe out there seems to be that everyone after the second pick wants to deal

Bren, you’re absolutely right, I just didn’t want to miss a perfect opportunity to insult Bonner.

Camby could be good for us if: a) we don’t have to give up much of anything for him and, b) he’ll play Spurs defense instead of leaving his man to freelance.

We could but what about the luxury tax. We already got jefferson now and still need to sign some players back. I agree though if we sign bakc our players and have a full roster we should try to get him if he comes cheap.

Bonner, Oberto, and Bowen for Camby and future draft pick (1 year left on his contract for 9.6 million)….

LA cuts Bowen and Oberto and takes their savings. They clear about 13 million from their 09-10 in total cap.

SA gets a starting center in Camby and resigns Bowen for the league minimum (1.3 million).

Our roster would be the big 3, Camby, Hill, Mason, Bowen, KT, Finley, Gist and Yawn. 11 roster spots filled at ~69.4 million. Then we just draft some second round prospects or call up D Leaguers to fill out the roster cheap. We would even still have the MLE of 5.6 million to go after a FA SF.

I wish Parker could fix his contract to give us another 2-4 million this year and put it on his last contract year ‘10-’11 because Duncan gets 3.5 million cheaper that year anyways.

Love it.

Do it. Pull the trigger now. Get Bonner off the books. Sorry Fab. The Clips score with Bonner’s streaky shooting. Please waive Bruce. He’ll do you no good, and you don’t need to play defense this year with Kamen and Griffin. Bruce comes back, and we get Camby.

Hi, my name is Ed, and I despise the Lakers.

He is also evil. Remember that.

almost the same thing happened but RJ for camby and KT instead of Bonner….i threw the second round pick in their just to make it a little nicer on us…

Our roster would be the big 3, RJ, Hill, Mason, Bowen, Bonner, Finley, Gist and Yawn. 11 roster spots filled at ~73.4 million. Then we just draft some second round prospects or call up D Leaguers to fill out the roster cheap. We would even still have the MLE of 5.6 million to go after a FA SF.

another key to consider is that this gives us a huge selling point to any FA looking for a chip….it shows our FO is serious about the duncan window and if you’re willing to sacrifice a little pay to join the winning side, sign the dotted line….

Well now with jefferson there is no need to find a wing player anymore. I say we trade splitters rights for somone in the draft. He hasnt even played in the nba yet. Or maybe give up all 3 of our picks one. Either way i be stuck to the tv come draft night tomorrow.

Tiago’s a somewhat proven asset, at least more proven than anyone currently in the draft. I’d only do this for multiple picks.

Bring back Bruce, and free James Gist!
