Personally I am fine with this. I think we should still try and make a deal for Camby or Chandler-both will be available. And address our wing position via Austin pipeline.

Agreed on the ‘being fine with this;’ but I’m of the strong belief that simply adding a Gist or DLeaguer + Camby/Chandler isn’t enough. We need something ‘big,’ and I’m not sure that Marcus OR Tyson qualifies.

I don’t think we can take on Camby or Chandler without trading Manu or Tony.

i mean our big 3 are set to make 45.5 million next season and adding another 10 million contract on that puts a big 4 up to 55 million…..try filling a roster with 11 guys on less than 20 million dollars

by BlaseE on Jun 20, 2009 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

its not that hard if you think it. Use 15 of those millions on 3 good role players and fill the rest of the roster with D league/darft guys. They would be hungry to play and we wouldnt rely on them a lot because they would be our 8-15 guys.

That’s what I’m saying. Kind of like the Celtics did in ’08. Suround your big guns with a bunch of youth and the younger guys will fall in line and have small contracts. Also Chandler is only 26, same age as Tony so he can have a running mate for the next few years.

The celtics are lucky because Rondo is the real deal and is still on rookie scale. Posey and Cassell came late to help push them at the end as well if my memory is correct. Boston is also a much bigger market than San Antonio.

by BlaseE on Jun 20, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

we also need to negotiate with Manu at the end of the season…i don’t think we want anything making that more difficult on the FO like another 10 million dollar player

by BlaseE on Jun 21, 2009 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

That doesn’t make sense. Camby or Chandler is not worth Tony Parker or an ounce of Manu’s ball hair.

I would like to see Duncan just take over center for a year and sign/trade for David Lee. The man led the league in double-doubles last year, obviously wants to win, and would continue our history of visually-nonathletic white guys in the paint.

It also helps Lee wants out of New York and the team is actively shopping him.

Edit

Nix the trade, Lee is a restricted FA. I’m sure the Spurs could offer a good contract (like they did to the Greek machine) and New York wouldn’t match. They are all about 2010.

Lee would be excellent, but I’ve sworn off Florida guys because of Bonner’s playoff flop. I’m not sure NY wouldn’t match anything. You can’t attract players in 2010 unless you have some quality around them. Lee is definitely a really good player, but also remember those stats are playing at D’Antoni’s pace. When your teams misses ~1500 3PA in a season, there are going to be a lot of long rebounds which benefit the offense. That’s more misses than 11 teams attempted. Their opponents missed another 1000 3’s. It was also Lee’s first season as a dominant starter (73 games) and his mpg went up by about 6 minutes. I’m just saying the star alligned for him to have a statistical career season so far.

Extra note: Spurs were the only team last season to give up less than 1200 3PA on defense. Detroit and Orlando gave up less 3PM’s though.

by BlaseE on Jun 22, 2009 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions

So how does a long rebound help a guy who sits in the paint? He averaged 8.6 defensive rebounds (34.9 min) this season compared to Duncan’s 8.0 (33.6 min).

The guys has energy and can score when called upon.

by Aaron "Hirschof" Preine on Jun 22, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

By the way

I’m not trying to compare Lee to Duncan in any way that would cast a bad light on Duncan. The skill difference is obviously there. I just would like to see those numbers side by side on the same team.

I don’t care if it is D’Antoni’s pace… I’ll take Lee’s 11.7 rebounds over Bonner’s 4.8.

by Aaron "Hirschof" Preine on Jun 22, 2009 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

You’ll also be looking at 6-10 million per to Bonner’s 3-4. NY was second highest in pace at 99 possessions per game and the Spurs were 4th lowest at 90.4. Over 82 games, that’s 705.2 possessions. At a generous rate of 50% shooting and 50% rebound rate, which his team doesn’t get close to, that’s 175 more rebounds he has a chance at or roughly 2 a game.

I’m not saying he is a bad player. I’d be glad to see him in a Spurs uniform for under 6 million per, but I’m just saying he is in a system that causes stat-bloat.

by BlaseE on Jun 22, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

You have to spend money to improve (most of the time). He is worth 6-8 million. In some of the few lower pace games the Knicks had, Lee was the highlight player.

I think you are looking too hard at season stats. Look into some of the individual box scores. In the two Knicks games against the Lakers, the NBA’s best overall rebounding team and scoring team in 2009, Lee posted 18 pts – 14 reb (11 def) and 22 pts – 12 reb (9 def). LA shot well in both games. His offensive rebounding actually seems to be weak though. Even in games where the opposing team shot horribly (35% and lower) he was only grabbing 1-2 offensive boards. I don’t think his stats are as bloated as you think.

Also, his career FG% is 56.4% while Matt’s is 47.6%. So he shoots more and scores better than Bonner.

San Antonio could trade Thomas/Bonner (both expiring) and a 2010 1st round pick for Lee and later negotiate a new contract.

So there is a lot of room for both teams to work here.

by Aaron "Hirschof" Preine on Jun 22, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

You’ve won me over. NY clearly wants cap room for 2010 in a sign and trade situation for Lee so maybe it would work. Possibly get him to agree to a 3 year deal where he makes 4-5 next year and then 7-8 the last 2 years. That would put us in a better position this season and to negotiate with Manu after. I wouldn’t mind taking that 8th pick off their hands too.

by BlaseE on Jun 22, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Manu wants to stay and negotiations shouldn’t take long. I can’t think of any long contract negotiations with the Spurs and players (recent years anyway)

Another reason why I love the Spurs management.

by Aaron "Hirschof" Preine on Jun 23, 2009 7:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Ehhh... not sure.

Tim uses intelligence and skill to position for rebounds. Making him the primary starting center would match him up against the physical bigs more often. Unless the Spurs got someone to come in bully (like Thomas and Oberto lost in the trade) this change would add more wear and tear to his knee.

I know Pop would rotate the assignments time to time but Lee is only 6’9" so it limits him a bit. I don’t know if Ian M. can battle underneath.
