Mapping PtR 2009 - Where are you?

It's like a geographical roll call.

Star-divide

Tell me where in the world you are.

I, The ATS, am in Austin, TX.  I've been here for 17 years.

Besides being the relatively new proprietor of this fine blog, I also am co-founder of a software company called VolunteerSpot.  If you are active in your community OR with your kids, I would suggest you check it out.

I saw my first Spurs game when I was about 5 years old. It was in Hemisfair arena when the Spurs were still in the ABA.  I don't remember much about it.  I remember that we had nose bleed seats.  I remember being in awe of the size of the building and the crowd.  I remember the score being 14??-14??.  Yes, in the low 1000's.

I had the old Iceman poster with George on the ice throne.  I was a big fan in the days of the Bruise Brothers.  Then I went semi-dark for awhile.  I followed the team, but wasn't really a committed fan.  Not until Tim showed up.  Then I followed a little closer.

Two years ago I really kicked it up a notch and here I am.

What about you?

West Texas

I am in West Texas, Midland for now. I work in the Oil industry…for now. I grew up in Lubbock, so I am of course a Red Raider fan. I’ve been following the Spurs since the early 90’s mostly because of David Robinson. My first Spurs game wasn’t until they were in the Alamo Dome, but it was the WCF game 1 against Houston in ’95. 3rd row, center court, it was pretty much awesome, it did take me awhile to be ok with Robert Horry in a Spurs uniform.

I’ve been an avid fan for a long time and was glad to find some other folks who love talking Spurs here on PtR.

You're not in West Texas!

I am! El Paso, TX to be precise. I’ve been a fan of the Spurs as far as I can remember thanks to Mr. Robinson. When I started following basketball, he was the one player I really enjoyed watching. I remember they played a pre-season game against the Warriors here in El Paso and remember going with my dad.

I now try to make at least one or two trips a year to watch them. Every year I’ll go to Phoenix, but whenever possible, I’ll make the trip to San Antonio.

I’m a network administrator in local govt :)

Yes…you are more west…but only by 250 miles or so. I’m glad to have another West Texan out there with me.

Argentina. (No, this isn’t the subject box. Hmph.)

Here’s an idea. We can put all of your our homes on a map and then I can plan my trip using that information, and thus save the money I’d waste on cheap hotels. Yay! (Another idea, ATS: link to your site instead of making people google for it.)

I live in Avellaneda, Buenos Aires. I’m a Civil Engineer, and I design dams for a living. I’m studying Literature, though, to offset the geekness other engineers like CapHill exhibit at all times. I watched my beloved Jordan crush the Spurs a number of times when I was a kid, then I saw Duncan and Robinson rise to the top of this league while immersed into a generalized apathy for all things NBA. When my hero Manu Ginobili finally got to the NBA, where he belonged, I started watching as many games as possible, and ended up choosing these old fossils as the team I’d pick as mine.

Now you’re stuck with me.

My journey has taken me from Panama City, Panama to Lafayette, IN and finally to Raleigh, NC. In Panama I of course had the freedom to root for whatever NBA team I liked and went with the Spurs as soon I acquired any ability to choose for myself (Jordan bandwagon like the rest of the world before that). i think i’ve related this story on ptr before, but i became a spurs fan back in the early 90s due to an old magazine called basketball digest. they had an article ranking the best centres in the nba, and the admiral was number 1, and that was enough for me. wasn’t easy following them in australia, since the only teams shown were chicago and….chicago.

. . . and getting priced out by my property taxes, but c’est la guerre. I am an editor in the educational assessment branch of a huge-ass publishing company. I am also V-P of the board of directors for CPI, a nonprofit dedicated to providing re-entry services to nonviolent offenders. I’ve always liked the Spurs, but my like didn’t turn into fanatical love until 2001 or so, when my current housemate began working their home games. There’s nothing like being financially dependent on a team to make you start cheering for them. Seriously, though, I’d love the Spurs regardless. I love Pop. I love Timmy. I love the whole dang team from head to toe. I’ve been reading PtR for a little over a year, finally delurked, and now y’all can’t shut me up.

The bumperstickers around here are starting to read

78745: For when you get priced out of 78704

And last night I took my dog across the street for doggy happy hour and only a few people were there instead of the usual 20 or 25. Apparently someone had called the cops and told them we were violating the leash laws. So the police came and started handing out tickets. This is a group of people from the neighborhood, mind you, who have been meeting at the park nightly for years and years to let our dogs play together and socialize. The CITY installed little puppy poo bag dispensers for us, and we were better about cleaning up after ourselves than the multitudes of people who come use our soccer field. Someone makes a phone call and poof . . . tradition destroyed. I am displeased. Between things like this and the influx of rich people destroying the cottages and replacing them with McMansions, my neighborhood is disappearing.

The park near my house is being taken over by Israeli settlers, has been shut down multiple times by the Israeli military, and you can’t grow grass here because it’s so effing dry.

Also, there are no tacos here, but I can by a pack of 8 tortillas for 5 dollars if I want to.

I must say, if bunches of drunks were hanging out at Stacy Park with unleashed dogs, I would be pretty put out. Many dog owners (though I’m not presuming to include you on this list) seem to think the whole world wants to play with their dogs. It’s especially bad for me because our 3-year old is afraid of dogs—our dentist has a little yappy dog she lets run around her office, and when he was about 1 1/2 years old the dog came and knocked him down and stood on top of him and licked his face for a few seconds, and ever since then he’s had a dog phobia.

I hate it when I’m at a park or wherever and a dog runs up to me and gets all in my business, putting its muddy paws on me and whatnot, and then the dog owner comes over and says something to the effect of “it’s ok, he’s a nice dog, he just wants to play.” Well, guess what, I don’t want to play with your dog.

Ah, but you presume a lot, tomasito. If there had ever, in all the years that we gathered, been a single incident such as those you describe, I’d accept my lot with grace. But although we call it “doggy happy hour,” there isn’t any drinking (at least, not by the humans — the dogs do drink lots of water, though). It’s just us, standing in the middle of a grassy area, throwing balls and chatting. I’m familiar with Stacy Park, and the layout of our park is much different (do you know the area next to Zilker Elementary? That’s where we go.) We go to an area far from the playscapes and the basketball and tennis courts and bother no one. Not only have I never seen a dog jump on an unwilling child or passerby, but standing there in the middle of 30 excited dogs I have never been jumped on! We’re careful to keep our dogs under control — there’s never been a dogfight, either.

I’m so sorry to hear about your 3-year-old, and I have a lot of sympathy for your situation. But here’s an ironic thing — one of my neighbors has a little girl who was deathly afraid of dogs (just was; no incident as far as we knew). She would bring her little girl over to sit and watch our dogs at play. After a few weeks, she would carry the girl over and ask her if she wanted to touch any of the dogs. She didn’t at first, but eventually she chose a few (my completely unthreatening portly ESS among them) to pet. It took a long time before she let her mother lower her to the ground to stand near the dogs, but she got there. We all clapped and she was just beaming.

We have no idea who called and complained, or why — but I stand by the statement that for our neighborhood as a whole, it was a Very Bad Thing.

Most are mutts, but we have quite a few of the breeds traditionally considered “aggressive” in the neighborhood. A number of pit bulls, some GSDs, three super hyper Aussie heelers, etc. It is was always interesting to see the dogs naturally sort themselves into little groups according to temperament. There have been a few times that someone new brought a poorly socialized dog to the group and either had to leash the dog or leave, but I only actually saw it happen once. And believe it or not, I never saw a single fight break out. It probably helped that several of our regular group were obedience trainers!

I am in Nashville, TN. Which is one of the reasons i created the Twitter group SA_SpursFans (<a href="http://twitter.com/sa_spursfans)" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/sa_spursfans)</a> so i could feel more a part of the experience of being at/around the games. Works just like the <a href="http://twitter.com/capsfans">CapsFans and <a href=“http://twitter.com/predfans”@PredFans groups do. Didn’t really take off too well though.

Hoping more people participate next year.

All you have to do is follow the account, then start your tweet with “@SA_SpursFans” and Spurs fans the world over will hear you and can talk to you – without you having to follow all of them and hear all of their other tweets – you only hear the stuff they say to the Spurs group.

I’m from Hermosillo, Sonora (northwest México, about 400mi south of Phoenix) and I have been a Spurs fan since I started watching basketball thanks to a poster my brother had when I was very young where it was profile photo of each player on the roster. Also, like pretty much every Spur fan, once I saw David Robinson play I was set as a Spur for life. A few years back I lived in Abilene while doing 2 semesters of graduate school on Computer Science at Texas Tech (yes, TTU has a building for graduate CS on Abilene. Even people there were surprised).

Unfortunately, I have never been to a Spurs’ game, but my wife has! She went to a conference in Phoenix and she got to see the Spurs beat the Suns (for a change). I hope I get the chance to see Timmy and Manu play before they retire. Go Spurs!

Downers Grove, IL (suburb of Chicago)

I am 28, and have liked the Spurs since the Robinson days. I’ve always had respect for the stand-up organization that they ran.

I was a huge Bulls fan in my younger-youth, the Jordan-era. I have seen the Bulls play the Spurs one time, in the 94-95 season (the infamous game when Scottie Pippen threw the chair onto the court. David Robinson stole the ball in the closing seconds of the game, drove it down court, and glided it in the hole for a layup- Spurs win.) I became a big fan when they acquired Duncan, and have not looked back. I’ve still pulled for the Bulls in this area, but I now consider myself a Spurs fan first.

I sit at a desk all day, infront of a computer, and am free to surf the net when we are not busy, hence my discovery of PTR last summer. You all are stuck with me, and I’m glad for it.

Fort Worth, Tx

I am 22 and lived the first 18 years of my life in San Antonio. I have been a Spurs fan since I can remember, though I didn’t really like basketball in general until around age 13 or 14 (I sucked at basketball and never could understand the subtleties of it until that age). I think the first time I really realized SA had a team was when my dad came home with a signed basketball from Robinson, so that was the damn team i would support.

I know I have said this before, but i still remember getting ready for school and watching the morning news, and they’d show clips of a new draft pick shooting some bank shots over and over, and that was when my fandom started ramping up.

I’m still going to be in college for another semester, then I’ll be working in the hospital until I retire.

born, raised, and going on 27 years now. I became a fan for the same reasons as most of you it seems. The first Spurs game I remember watching was Robinson’s first NBA game ever and at 7 yrs. old I was mesmerized by his grace and agility, and have been a fan of the game since. I’ve bled silver and black my whole life, which was a difficult thing until 1999 and the Duncan era, which I am eternally grateful for. I’ve been reading this blog for 3ish years now and have posted on and off for the past 2. I really enjoy the freshness and honesty of the commentary on this blog. Hopefully by this time next year we will still be commenting on games instead of about where we live and who we are (which has also been quite an interesting read).

A small part of me was a little i guess the word would be “relieved” because i was not happy the spurs lost so soon. I found that I had a hard time last postseason allocating adequate time to both the Spurs and school. In the end I think school lost.

But if i could ask you a quick question Lauri, was the process difficult taking the bar in a different state? I don’t have any real desire to practice law in Texas and I need to find out what I need to do to take the bar elsewhere, but since you have done just that, do you have any advice on the process?

Glad your sister is pursuing the “field”, and not you know…

by staves27 on May 13, 2009 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The process is not at all hard, or at least it wasn’t in 1997. I stayed in Austin and took the in-person Bar-Bri review for the MBE, and I bought a supplemental set of materials for the NY-specific parts of the exam. You just need to figure out where you want to practice and see what their bar exam entails. Every state has its own little peculiarities, but they aren’t too hard to navigate.

San Antonio

Born here. Went to Austin for college and then came back after a short stint bumming it in San Marcos while friends were still in college. Mechanical engineer (at a company with an AT&T center suite).

I can’t remember my first Spurs game….kind of sucks.

My brother is 4 years older and we started collecting cards when David Robinson was new to the team. I don’t think the NBA was ever as full of charismatic talent then when all of the Dream Team was playing. I hated Karl Malone and the Jazz but the league was full of stars it seemed. Jordan and the Bulls dominated the championships but lots of teams had stars and postseasons were always exciting. Most of those players were still around when Shaq, Alonzo, Webber and that group of talent came in so the league seemed really deep. Being in elementary school, you go to a game or so every other season and collect the cards but I wasn’t really a devote follower. I stopped collecting cards the Glenn Robinson, Grant Hill, and Jason Kidd rookie season so I never got a single Duncan card.

When we got Duncan and I was in high school, I started to follow more. Then in college it became more fun to watch the games when you have roommates and drinking. Plus the Spurs were winning championships or being robbed of them so it was more intense. Its also really awesome to know your team annoys fans all over the country and no one wants to see you win or even see you.

Currently live in Denver, raised in OKC, was living in IL during the second half of the Jordan years (I might have been the only person in that state rooting for Stockton and the Jazz). Didn’t have an NBA team growing up, but started rooting for the Spurs when they drafted Timmeh, who I was impressed with during the NCAAs. Fell in love with the “play basketball the right way” vibe from the Spurs during the Pop/Timmeh era. Never saw the Spurs in person until I saw them at the Can a few years ago.

I do distinctly remember my older brother having the Gervin “ice thrown” poster in his room when I was a child.

But once the chips stop, I’ll just abandon ship and become a Nuggets fan. ; )

And yes, I’m another one of those pesky engineers, but my field is transportation. Does it seem strange to anyone else that PtR seems to be a haven for the technical professions?

That’s hilarious, because us locals say that about nearly every team that Colorado plays at Coors! Guess that’s the drawback of a newer club in a bandwagon-happy town like Denver. Although it’s not as bad now that the Rocks have made the Series.

There’s a great aquarium to see. 16th Street Mall is cool, and she’ll dig it. Taking a scenic drive west on I-70 to the Eisenhower Tunnel and seeing the foliage in Georgetown, etc. is cool too. Celestial Seasonings Tea is in Boulder, and Coors is in Golden, so those are both worthwhile as well. And the Denver Zoo isn’t a waste of time either. Many great micro-breweries around the metro area as well. If you have time, a day trip up to Estes Park (Rocky Mtn National Forest) is cool as well.

Austin, TX

I currently live in Austin, TX and I was lucky enough to attend Finals games in 05 and 07. I grew up in a little town about an hour south of SA. My first game was way back in the hemisfair arena in a game against the Sixers. I was less than 10 years old i think, so I’m going to guess it was in ’92. Growing up I had a David Robinson poster on my closet door. I think it was a free poster from a bank, but it was mine!

CC, TX

At 61, I’m likely the oldest guy visiting this site. I’m originally from Corpus but did my graduate work at UT Austin. In my early days I liked Wilt, then dropped basketball for many years. After teaching at UT for a number of years, I taught at UH during the Phi Slama Jama days and had both Drexler and Hakeem (among others, note: he was Akeem then) as students. So I was a Rockets and Blazers fan through the late 80s and 90s. Suffered through the Blazer losses to Jordan’s Bulls but enjoyed the Rockets back-to-backs, especially, of course, in ‘95. Traveled the world between ’84 and ’90 before settling in New Mexico and starting my own business. Began liking the Spurs when Duncan joined but became fanatical when Manu signed up. He just played with a flair and panache I’d never seen before. Didn’t hurt that he was Latino. Found PtR three years ago and have been an avid follower ever since. Keep up the good work. BTW: moved back to CC a few years ago and am semi-retired from political consulting.

NBA games and news were hard to come by when I was growing up. I think I started playing in 6th grade and needless to say all the way in asia, I knew only about Jordan and he was enough. He was the epitome of everything perfect in sports though the person I appreciated most on the Bulls was always Scotty. During the last 3 yrs of the Bulls’ run, I was in various cities just about to go to college and catching the playoff games in different strangers homes, and thus began my disgust of Malone and love for Stockton.

After I came to the US in early 2000, D Rob was the man. Humble and always trying to do the right thing. And from there, needless to say I was hopelessly a Spur and Manu made it even more special, I went around grinning like a nutjob all the time after Spurs games.

Phoenix, AZ

I guess I’m late to this thread, but here goes:

I was born in San Antonio, and lived there until I was 6. Spurs fandom was ingrained into every fiber of my being in the early years, mostly by my grandmother(who, at 85, is still the most rabid Spurs fan I’ve ever met). I still remember how loud the Hemisfair was on my 5th birthday when the Spurs beat Utah. Then, we moved to Florida(Tampa), and due to the utter lack of Spurs coverage, I could only afford to care during the playoffs. Although, my grandmother was visiting from SA in 99 when we got our first chip, and she went nuts. In 2003, my family moved back to SA, but my parents moved back to Florida about a year, and have stayed there ever since. I stayed with them briefly(4 months) before moving to California(Sacramento) in 2006. Desperate after hearing that layoffs were coming at work, I took the first job I was offered, which landed me here in this desert in 2007. Worst. Decision. Ever.

This time around, moving away from SA hasn’t dampened my fandom – in fact, it’s only increased my internet usage trying to find every bit of Spurs news possible. Imagine my glee when I started lurking on PtR and clinking feed links. I really kicked it up a notch this year when I decided to participate and contribute – this has to be the safest place for a Spurs fan in Phoenix to talk Spurs.

Thanks for listening, I’ve enjoyed reading this thread. Great idea, ATS.

Wasn’t born here… but I got here as soon as I could. (Please… whatever you do… don’t call it San Antone. Not. Cool).

I saw Barkley take a shot over The Admiral to close down the Arena. I was there to witness Sean Elliott take the shot that became the Memorial Day Miracle at the Alamodome. At the end of 1999, I joined about 250,000 of my closest fanatical friends in downtown San Antonio… while my team celebrated in New York.

I was there for Game 6 of the 2003 Finals and watched David Robinson’s storybook ending come to fruition.

In 2004, I watched the clock stop at .4 and dealt with heartbreak. And the next year I watched two Gods named Tim and Manu take over in the 4th quarter of Game 7 of the 2005 Finals.

In 2006, I watched my hero bring us back and give us a 3 point lead in Game 7 of the WCSF. My friend was crying and jumping up and down, but I told her there was too much time because I remembered .4.

And in 2007, I watched my team roll thru 3 old foes and a promising new contender to reach the pinnacle once again.

I have truly been blessed to be able to watch the team I love play during this incredible era. I am reminded of this each and every time the extended family that is PtR post from their various homelands.

…. And…. I can’t wait for next season!

Wow, you’re like Forrest Gump, there for all the Spurs’ big moments. I saw the Barkley shot, and the Nick Van Exel halfcourt 3 to beat the Spurs in one game, and the Horry shot that likely cost us the 1995 WCF. I think it’s better for all involved that I moved away and don’t really go to games anymore.

Brand new to the Seattle area, various places before that.

Moved to San Antonio in summer of ’87, when they drafted David. Got to see a couple of games at Hemisfair, and quite a few at the dome. Left SA in ’98 for a job, but I still come back to visit family and sometimes catch Spurs games.

Bummed I got to Seattle too late to see the Spurs play at Key Arena. Oh well, the Rose Garden isn’t that far away.

Back in SA as of this weekend...

I was recently living and working in Austin. Thankfully I was laid off, so I’m moving back home and signing up for school. Grew up in SA and never really paid attention to the Spurs. Went away to the Navy and started rooting for them on the rare occasions I watched basketball, guess I missed home. Really became a fan when I moved back home in ’94, we had Robinson. Started paying attention just in time for the Hill/Popovich drama…

Philippines

In case you don’t know where that is, I got two words for you: Manny Pacquiao. If you still don’t know, then I probably can’t help you. The most popular place here is Manila (being the capital, of course) but I live in a place called Antipolo, which is one of the highest places east of Manila. But I’m staying at the foot of the mountain, so to speak, so i don’t have to go up and down the hill to get to the capital.

Spurs fan, S.D. (Since Duncan). But before that, I was also a homer for Jordan and the Jordanaires (i.e. the Bulls), just like how those Gasol-led and Manu-led Spanish and Argentine Olympic basketball teams worshiped him. I didn’t know anything about Timmeh before he joined SA. I was just making this friendly bet with one of my classmates back in high school, where we picked a rookie from the draft and see how they’ll turn out. He picked Tracy McGrady, and me, not knowing anybody in that draft and guided by sheer common sense that Duncan was the consensus #1, decided to go with The Big Fundamental. I was “forced” to monitor his progress and along the way, fell in love with TD and the Spurs. One of the moments I clearly remember watching on TV was Sean Elliot’s miracle, tip-toe shot and yes, the near quadruple-double. Guess who won the bet of 100 pesos or roughly, $2.00. Yay, lunch.

I work for the local stock exchange in the country as a research analyst, but irony of ironies, the law here provides that employees are banned from trading stocks. I’m going to start taking up my master’s degree in Economics this school year, so probably less time for PtR. But I do hope to still hang around.

Heh, it’s not too shabby here. Insider trading occurs every day (if not for a 50% daily cap, worthless stocks will shoot through the roof on awesome days), old-ass brokers who can’t let go of their riches (they walk with canes or parade wheel chairs and freakin’ bring nurses to the trading floor, goddamit), and our usual intra-office squabbles about bending the rules to favor certain companies. All-action like Pacquiao, I tell you.

Las Vegas, NV

Born and raised in San Antonio for the first 23 years of my life. Moved to Round Rock, then around DFW (Fort Worth-Arlington-Grand Prairie) and have now been here for the last 4 years.

I have been a Spurs fan since as long as I can remember. I’ve lived through Rod Strickland’s behind the back, Barkley closing down the Arena, Hakeem destroying us in the WCF, and the Memorial Day Miracle. I was in downtown San Antonio in 1999 when we won our first championship and it was pure awesomeness and euphoria. I was also lucky enough to attend the 2003 Riverwalk Ceremony. I celebrated like a madman all alone in 2005 as I had just moved to Vegas. 2007 was more icing around the cake.

I love my Spurs, good or bad, highs and lows.

I will be forever thankful for PtR. Unless I get banned, you guys and gals are stuck with me.

Austin, Texas, 78704

I live here in my 1200 SF McMansion, being rich and calling the cops about loose dogs, slowly destroying Lauri’s neighborhood.

I was born in San Antonio and went to nearly every home game from 1980-1995, witnessing a whole lot of futility. I suffered through the Alfredrick Hughes era, Walter “The Truth” Barry and Alvin Robertson getting into fights on the road with butter knives, and Big Dave and Sean Elliott never quite getting over the hump. Then I move away to go to college at UT and we start collecting ’chips like they were Beanie Babies.

I’m currently working full time for a software company doing user interface design, and I am studying to get a Master’s in Civil Engineering part time at UT—I am on track to graduate this December. I also do freelance graphic design work on the side—check out my website at www.tomasrdesign.com if you are interested. Normally I wouldn’t plug my site, but hey, if our leaders ATS and LatinD do it, then it must be the cool thing to do.

tomasito must have been at the first home game i ever attended. at hemisfair vs chuck nevitt and the rockets. spurs had drafted dave, but were still waiting out his military commitment. line up included willie anderson, caddy anderson, vern maxwell, walter berry and alvin robertson…among others. frank brickowski was there too.

i am a south texan for anywhere between 5 and 12 days a year., but as many of you know i live in cincinnati, ohio for the other 350+ days. i have been making the annual trip to see a spurs home game or two every season since whatever year it was that i mentioned above. this past year’s trip was particularly special for me because i met a number of the PtR folks in person, ate a bunch of great barbecue/tacos, got to see two wins….and oh yeah, i got married to my long-time girlfriend while we were in town.

i am kind of surprised to read about the number of you who are engineers – and in the transportation field. i am a transportation planner by day.

i dont have anything like a web or blog to pimp during my stays here. not to worry, i check out most of what you folks around here pimp though. i m continually surprised by all the talented folks who hang around here.

Bariloche

I’m living in Bariloche, 1600km far from Buenos Aires, in Patagonia. I’m an addicted to PtR since 3 year ago, for me this blog is not only a “sports” or “spurs” related community, for me is like a state of mind. I enjoy a lot with the posts here.

I’m an spurs fan before Manu arrives to SA, but i start to see and read all I can when Manu start playing in 2003. Mainly i’m “passive” member, because of my poor english :(

I have an small web design company (www.animus.com.ar) and i’m also an amateur Photographer. I can’t wait until next season starts, i think the Spurs (and Manu in special) need a revenge, a redemption, obviously for that SA need to improve their roster.

I looked at your portfolio. Beautiful work! Is there a place we can see your photography?

Don’t worry about your english, it’s very good. In fact, yesterday I was thinking about how lame I feel with all the people here from other countries who can speak several languages fluently. It impresses and amazes me, and makes me more determined than ever to learn Spanish. I’ll never be fluent, mostly because I’m ancient and my brain is rusty, but I would love to be able to at least read it and speak it enough to get by. So post! It will make lamers like me feel better!

One reason groups like PTR are so awesome is that you have a diverse group of fans that have different perspectives of your team. No one from France has stepped up and claimed it yet but having French and Spanish speakers allows articles in those languages to be posted with key statements translated. I always like to know what native countries think about their players on the Spurs. It also seems like foreign players are more earnest/jovial to their home media. Maybe its being able to speak in their first language. I’d also encourage you to post.

Hey, piojo. Two things: first of all, your English is just fine. And that’s from someone who mangles it on a daily basis. Besides, the best way to improve your English skills is yep, you guessed to actually write in English as often as possible. Blogging, chatting – it’s all great practice.

And I want more countrymen to post here. Especially if they don’t type in all-caps and yell about Fangio.

Secondly, your photos were incredible. Beautiful, breath-taking, and with some hilarious captions. Keep it up.

Wow. You’ve captured / created some really beautiful shots. I especially love the waterfall… you were able to show very rich colors. I also love the tree photo with the starkness and movement. The rippling water photo was also a highlight. And lastly, I absolutely love the child’s portrait. The child’s face has the feel of an oil painting… it was really a great use of high speed film and available light. I think your experimentation with shutter apertures and film speed make all the difference between an ordinary photograph and art. You are definitely not an amateur. Many thanks for sharing your work with us. I only have one question… what types of cameras do you use?

BTW- Your English is much better than my Spanish… you should definitely post more often. I did like the trash sign photo and although I know the meaning of the final line… I’m choosing to go with a more literal interpretation. “The seashell of your mother”. ;-)

Silicon Valley

I currently live in what is known as the South Bay. That is, south of San Fransisco, aka Silicon Valley. I just started reading PtR fairly recently (within the past year) but I’ve always loved the Spurs (well, since ‘99 when I started liking them). Though I’ll be moving to Seattle rather soon. I’m a Financial Analyst for a large computer company soon to become a Masters’ student. I’d like to watch more games, and am considering (when I get to Seattle) moving from general NBA blogging at Poor Man’s GM to Spurs blogging, maybe get League Pass and focus on just Spurs games. We’ll see….

Basketball history wise, I didn’t really get into following the NBA quite this closely until, well, maybe last year or the year before. I realized I wasn’t very good at fantasy sports but loved to speculate on trades and follow team progress. Have to say, pre-Spurs, I was a big fan of the Jazz during the Stockton-Malone era, though it might’ve also been partially because my brother kept rooting for the Jordan-Pippen Bulls.

Dallas, TX

well, actually, Lewisville, which is a bit north, but nobody knows that, so Dallas it is. born in SA, moved at around 7 or 8, eventually hit the Houston area in high school (and had to endure the Rockets’ two chips), and now up here in mavland.

i’ve always followed the Spurs since i was young, but became a die-hard when The Admiral showed up. i can’t stress enough how much of an impact he made on me as a sports icon. the dude was, and is, just awesome! and with Timmy, MANU, and Tony showing up to solidify the Spurs’ relevance, i think my satisfaction as a fan has been made. many fans dream of their team winning one championship, so to have four will be enough for me the rest of my life. of course i want them to win more, but i think i can rest content.

i’m one of the peeps that doesn’t show up for a game thread, but this is a daily stop for me otherwise. at least i’ll go back and read the thread the next morning, so that’s gotta count for something. okay, maybe not.

I grew up in Corpus Christi but am currently at UT going into my senior year. I’m from a family of Spurs fans and saw two games at the Alamodome before the team moved to the SBC, AT&T, Tim Duncan Center. Grew up in SA, moved out to the country as soon as I could, living in the Luling area now. Surrounded by land, cattle and horses(not all mine !) makes life pretty peaceful. Do animal rescue, currently have 5 dogs, numerous cats outside, four inside. Was a Headhunter for years, now doing inside sales. Very spoiled, have worked in a virtual office setting for the last 10 years.

Never watched sports growing up other than the forced Dallas Cowboy games on weekends. Hated it. I love to be outside or reading a good book. My older brother came to visit from Ohio during the 2002 play offs. Wanted to watch the Spurs play so I relented on the NO SPORTS ON MY TV. A few games later, I am totally hooked. Never saw it coming. I was so pissed when they lost. Next year I was so excited when they won. 2005, I was a nervous wreck willing them to beat the damned Pistons !! The next day, you couldn’t knock that stupid grin off my face. I truly realized then that I was a fan for life, hate to be without my Spurs. Only reason I pay for cable now. Well, that and the little munchkin likes her Cartoon Network.

2007, I had just lost my best friend Jake the day before the Spurs swept the Cavs. Jake was with me 24/7, his loss left a huge hole in my heart. My son came to watch the game with me, I even enjoyed a few beers. I was so thankful they won, giving me a reason to cheer, a parade to look forward to and a new season just down the road.

PtR has been a blessing for me, a place to go to read about and share the Spurs. It goes off topic enough to keep it interesting and gives a good laugh out loud on a daily basis. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

Monterey, CA

Just south of the Bay Area

Got tons of family in San Antonio. When I was there visiting back in 05, we watched a game on tv and I’ve been into it ever since. It was against the pacers. I kept the newspaper article from it.

Went to see them play in March of 07 against the warriors. Manu had a nice fastbreak dunk and james white played……Final score 126-89

Colorado Springs, CO

Born and raised in New Mexico. Moved to Texas (West for several years going to school, then DFW, SA and Austin working for a company in all those places) after high school. Moved to Colorado about 5 years ago to be close to mountains and hunting and kayaking and snow. Became a SPURS fan as a kid, because there was nothing cooler than following a guy everyone referred to as "Ice." Fell quickly in love with the team and followed through highs and many lows. Enter Lt. Robinson, USNA. The only possible thing cooler than a guy named Iceman, was a guy who aced the Naval Academy, paid his dues to the country, and then later joined my team to become one of the game’s all-time best big men. Enter Merlin. The only thing cooler than one of the game’s all-time best big men is the game’s best ever PF. The quiet personality, the class and dignity, the discipline. The commitment to staying in school before it became so trendy. And then there’s my sweet Manu. Watched live his first NBA game and saw something special then, and my heart hasn’t been mine since.

Growing up, attended many games at the HemisFair and from then on have been hooked. Forced my entire family into SPURS-worship when they weren’t even basketball fans. Have been really blessed to see some great moments in SPURS history, and will always be a fan. It’ll probably be awhile for us all to realize how truly blessed we are in being a part of this organization, and I’m constantly amazed at how far the franchise has come. I can remember being a fan of a good team who never could quite crack into the upper level, and suddenly in the past decade or so we’ve become one of the game’s best dynasties. We’re so fortunate to have these guys (and really the majority of ALL of our guys over the years) as such stellar role models and pillars of class and honor, and I’m proud to be part of the community that is the San Antonio SPURS.

Haven’t been around as much lately due to the job/travel, the lady-friend, and summer activities; but I’m always here lurking….judging…..cataloging. I freakin’ love the community of PtR. I love knowing that there’s fanatics just like me all over the world, and we’re all sharing in the same modern days highs and lows together.

Schertz TX (SA suburb)

Love this thread! I read and appreciate PtR every day, but rarely post…and never during games cuz I watch in another room on DVR-delay (no commercials yay!) Plus-and-also-too, I’m too old to keep up with all you quick-witted peeps! But I love your enthusiasm for our SPURS and your multi-culturalism (multi-culturality?) That also reflects SA and the team, which I started following after I moved to SA in 1996 at the end of an Air Force career (also grew up as an AF “brat” so I’m from nowhere/everywhere…but I’m Texan by blood and Texan at heart!) Of course THE Admiral was a big draw (I remember his days at the USNA while I was stationed at the AF Academy:) and Timmeh (so shy when he first arrived) and SuperManu (such flair!) and Mr. Longoria (our own celebri-couple, woot!) BTW, Tony Park-air was ever so kind to my elderly parents who met him at a local restaurant…I got them hooked on the SPURS when they moved here in 2001 and now we call each other after every game to cheer or commiserate! And I turned my brother (in Cedar Park!) and cousin (New Braunfels) onto PtR so now it’s a family affair! Yall are almost as entertaining as the team…thanx much!

Sydney Australia (Manly)

Have always loved the spurs because as sad as it may seem the first thing my dear mother purchased for me when i fell in love with the game of basketball and started playing it a lot as a wee tacker was a pair of shorts with Spurs down the side.

That committed me for life pretty much.

Right here in San Antonio

Born in Lubbock, raised in San Antonio. A Spurs fan since the Iceman days. Can’t stand the Cowboys since they are from a whacked out city and have nothing to do with San Antonio. Spurs are a class organization and do it in style. They do it the right way, not like Dallas and LA. Would not be that upset to see LA slip into the Pacific Ocean.

Viva Spurs!

Beit Sahour, West Bank, Palestinian Territories

I’ve been living here for 3 years, working as the country director for a not-for-profit that focuses on developing communities by working with youth and children. Paidia International Development. I grew up in Austin, and my 20 year anniversary of Spurs fandom is next year.

I discovered PtR during our last championship run, I believe a Stampler post worshipping James White attracted me for the first time. I miss a lot of games because they are on in the middle of the night, but I do my best to wake up for the important ones.

Thanks, we think it is a pretty innovative way to go about it. We really want to work in places where first level needs are already being met, either because the economy allows for it or because other organizations are doing so. We help young people develop social and leadership skills while improving their communities. We are still getting started here, so our success stories haven’t come, but I don’t think they are far away.

Oklahoma City

Been a Spurs fan since the days of Avery, the Admiral, & Sean Elliot (back when championships were always at arm’s-length). My first Spurs game was a blow-out of the then OKC Hornets. I might just be the only Spurs fan who likes Chris Paul

If less is more, imagine how much more more would be.

by JonnyJam on May 16, 2009 8:55 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I started out liking Chris Paul. I respected his skillz and he is a Wake Forest guy like Timmeh and my cousin so he starts with that. But he is gangrene and only gets worse. Now I can’t stand the guy.

I know my cousin who went to Wake roots for the Spurs because of Duncan and I can only assume she also likes Chris Paul. So I’m sure there are extenuating circumstances for liking both the Spurs and Paul but you are in the narrowest of centers in that Venn diagram.

Speaking of my cousin and basketball and other people pimping personal links in this thread. Her uncle or my second uncle in law or whatever that would be is the late Dick Raphael (collective: who is that?). Well he was a sports photographer and I believe he has the record for most SI covers. I never really knew him, but his work is really cool. Most of his work is Celtics and Super Bowls though. Anyways, check out his pictures here and here and one of my favorites. Spurs pics here. I know he took photos of Robinson and the 90’s Spurs but those don’t show up. I think there are a lot of legal battles between SI, Getty, and my uncle over the rights to his work.

Bariloche, south of Argentina
It all started with one Michael Jordan. Of course Pippen and Rodman helped a lot (Kukoc? For some reason I hated him back then… he looked so european to me). After the 98 campaign I was left alone with no team to follow. I saw the Spurs as a mighty force with th twin towers and then I proceded with the most shameless act of bandwagoning you could ever see. Hey, I was just a kid, and kids love winning teams.
Then I saw the draft (via ESPN, i had no fucking idea what was that, but it was NBA-related) and the mighty spurs selected an argentinean. That’s the moment where i said “there’s no frickin chance he will play in the nba”… three or so years later I give up on watching soccer because my eyes couldnt believe so much awesomness happening on a basketball court (and by awesomness i mean Malik Rose rolling to the hop…… and yeah manu playing and just being argentine)

Whats in Wildomar? Nothing, It just produces really cool people. I see the Spurs once a year every year when they come to LA and play the Clippers. Lakers tickets are too expensive. Robinson was my boyhood idol and now Manu has my heart.
