The Spurs Have a Need...

It's great in all to say how our wings are pretty crappy, which they are.  I mean, yeah, I like the Roger Mason signing, I like the George Hill draft, but tack onto that Michael Finley (please don't take your player option), Bruce Bowen, Ime Udoka, and Jacque Vaughn, it's pretty hurting.  Hill is still a project, Mason, well, Mason is a shooter.  Yes, it'd be nice if we could get a finisher/creator, he doesn't need to create for others, he just needs to do his job, get to the rim and score.  It'd be nice if in this offseason we could get one of Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, Marquis Daniels, or Walter Herrmann (or Ron Artest?), somewhat realistically speaking.  Unrealistically speaking, it'd be nice if we could get Kobe or Hedo to opt out and sign with us, if we could nab Trevor Ariza from the Lakers.  I trust Pop and the front office will deal with that somehow, I really do.  Yes, the Spurs could also use an upgrade at the PF/C to play next to Tim Duncan.  Yes, I would love to sign Rasheed Wallace and make another run, yes, it would be a dream if Mehmet Okur decided to opt out and sign with us, yes, to a lesser extent that Zydrunas Ilgauskas opts out and signs with us.  I think you get the point.  However, here's what I think the Spurs really need:

The Spurs need Tim Duncan to become the David Robinson to the next Tim Duncan.

Star-divide

I think that last sentence might have been kind of confusing.  I had to think about it a couple of times before I was sure I got it right.  No, there will never be another Tim Duncan, no, there will never be another David Robinson.  I'm not expecting some rookie to waltz in and average 24.9 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.7 steals, and 3.9 blocks per game (David Robinson, in his rookie year).  I'm also not asking anyone to have career low averages of no less than 18.6 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game across 12 seasons (Tim Duncan).  For most bigs, either one of those lines would probably signify a career season or close to it.

It's nice to hope for the Mehmet Okurs and the Rasheed Wallaces in hopes of landing Timmy his 5th ring before he retires, but, also, the Spurs need to look to the future.  Maybe they start building around Tony Parker, maybe they draft some young stud in the wings.  Maybe they somehow land LeBron.  All that aside, I think it's high time Timmy takes someone under his wing.  Will it be Ian Mahinmi?  Maybe Anthony Tolliver?  Maybe finally Tiago Splitter comes to the states?  I don't know.  I'm not resting my hopes on getting the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge or something (Portland probably won't trade him for anything short of Tony Parker).  Al Jefferson I think is another pipe dream.  However, regardless of who it is, what form he takes, Tim Duncan is too good of a player and character to not have mentoring someone the Spurs see in their future.  Spurs have never been a place where it's been a slapdash of stars thrown together via trades, while they pick and choose their role players, the Spurs have always stood fast on the same franchise centerpiece for the duration of his career (see Tim Duncan, David Robinson).

I don't see the Spurs changing that course of direction now, and quite frankly, I don't think I'd be as big of a fan if they weren't the type of organization for the Tim Duncans and the David Robinsons.  While I'd love to have a Rudy Gay type talent on the roster, I hope that Pop and the front office of the Spurs organization find some way to raise up the future leaders of the team.  Duncan is a future hall-of-famer, he needs to leave his mark in the future.  I'm not going to say David Robinson made Duncan into who he is today, but I'm sure he played a big role in bringing him along.  I'd imagine it helps having one of the greatest players of the previous era guiding your steps.  Robinson made his mark on the Spurs today through that.  The Spurs need to find someone for Duncan to mold and mentor.  They need Duncan to make his mark on the organization, more so than just another banner in the rafters, more so than just having his number 21 jersey retired.  The next guy will have his own flavor, his own style, but still, Timmy is just one resource you can't waste in terms of developing the next young big in the franchise.

Lebron wants to be THE largest sports figure in the world. He wants to create an empire. That doesn’t happen in San Antonio. It happens in New York.

I use the LeBron reference more as sarcasm...

I know that he’s not going to go to San Antonio.

How would you feel about the spurs signing ramon sessions, i know george hill is there but im not sure the Spurs are 100% sold on hill.

Well there is no new Tim Duncan coming

So perhaps everyone who was against the Vince Carter trade should throw out some new ideas.

The window is closing fast, and its gonna be ugly afterwards-They have to get some sort of return on their Mahinmi investment, get him healthy and hopefully Pop will trust him a bit more.

I guess we can hope that Bosh really wants to return to Texas, but with no 1st rounder this year, our other no 1s in Spain or with perpetual ankle problems, things arent looking to good for the long term.

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

I think we’re going to sign Rasheed Wallace in the off-season. I know he is old, but he still can play. We need to get younger. Go for Sessions. He got game!

so true

We need the future. We can’t rely on bringing in 30 year old guys with some talent, we need more youth with a lot of potential.

A perfect/imperfect storm is needed

for a team to get someone like Duncan. First a player of that caliber needs to be available, which is not the case in all drafts. In addition, David Robinson had to be hurt for almost the entire regular season and the Spurs needed to struggle in order for the Spurs to have a shot at Duncan. Unfortunately, I think that barring a serious injury to Duncan (which is the last thing anyone wants here), there will be a time period when the Spurs will not perform well during the regular season.

Good read

I agree with your point. I believe that we can build around Tony Parker. If we can get a big guy who can compliment TP, I’d be alright with that. If it’s Ian Mahinmi or Splitter that’d be great. I will also say that it’s not imperative to have a super stud coming behind Duncan. If Parker would mature a little bit he could be the cornerstone of the franchise. I don’t think he’s there yet. He’s to streaky and immature. I’ll be interested to see what happens.

I'm not saying we'll find another Duncan out there...

I’m just saying that’s a lot of basketball wisdom and professionalism and know-how you waste if you don’t let him bring it to the future. No one’s saying that the Spurs are gonna get another Duncan in terms of basketball talent, just that he can really make an impact on the Spurs’ future. A huge, postive impact.

Recced. I’ve been thinking this for some time now. I hope it’s Mahinmi, and that he’s not really “Mr. Glass”.

Come to think of it, Gooden could use Timmeh’s tutelage as well. He has the size, but maybe Timmeh could help him with the mental aspects of the game he struggles at sometimes.

Please get better for real this time, Manu.

call me crazy, but i actually like the Gooden signing and wouldn’t mind having him back again and having a whole summer to work out on is game with TD.

Am I the only one that hopes that Tim will get better next season and go back to being the Tim Duncan that started this season? Because a few months ago he was carrying this silly team…

Good point, and I know I’d like that

I hope...

…but I don’t think it will ever happen. I think the days of Tim Duncan, dominant superstar, have come to an end, sadly. I’d be happy if he gave us 15 and 10 and shot a high percentage for a few more years, and ceded the scoring spotlight to Tony Parker. In a way, the TD/Tony situation is analogous to the Robinson/Duncan situation. I knew after Robinson got hurt and we drafted Timmy that Big Dave would never be the center throwing down 360 dunks in games, picking off inbounds passes and going the length of the court, etc.

I don’t think the Spurs’ window has closed though, especially if Duncan and Manu both come back as effective (if no longer dominant players), and the Spurs can do some retooling with some young, athletic, hungry players.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

We’ve seen some pretty bright dancing since ‘99. I know that even if my words have forked no lightning, I’ll be raging right alongside TD and Manu.

You’re better off trying to intimidate the sea.

More Argentinians with long flowing hair...

That is the answer to everything. Someone get RC on the phone. Tell him to sign Walter Herrmann as soon as the FA opens up.
