Hello, fellow rock-pounders. We have a game tonight. Forgive me if I tone it down a bit from my previous blasphemy and negative-mojo-filled game thread. It got out of hand, but there's nothing like seing your team's title hopes end before the playoffs begin to bring you down a notch.

Looks like another spurs fan just found out Manu's season is over.

Nothing like the smell of depression in the evening. Even the Admiral says the Spurs have no chance without Manu. Preview after the jump.

Breakdown

Point Guard - Tony is one of the top 3 PG's in the league. Unfortunately for him, so is D-Will. This will be the marquee matchup, obviously. Whoever wins this battle probably wins the game.
Off Guard - Mason needs to step it up, and play like he did when Tony and Manu were both hurt. Ronnie Brewer apparently starts for Utah, but I'd be more worried about Korver.
Center - Tim Duncan just isn't TIMMEH! lately. Okur is a noted Spur-killer.
Power Forward - Red Rocket is simply a horrible matchup with Boozer. Kurt and/or Drew can be expected to do slightly better against Boozer, but will still be outmatched.
Small Forward - We start Michael Finley, they start Andrei Kirilenko. *sigh*
Bench - Gooden's offense could be useful, especially since the Booze doesn't play much D. That said, they have Millsap and Korver coming off the bench, and we don't have a certain Argentine coming to our rescue.
Coach - Pop is a great coach, there's no denying that. But I would argue that Sloan's been making it happen with much less for the past 3 years or so. Tie.
Intangibles - Utah hasn't won in SA since... hell, even Jerry Sloan can't remember. That would be 19 straight.
Mojo - I could be wrong on this one. Marcus Williams could lead us to a title. Oh, wait...
Winners - What the hell, I'll pick us.

Keys To The Game

3-pointers - Somebody needs to make them for us. Mace? Rocket? Findog? Ime?[laugh]
Defense - Bruce, Kurt, and George need some minutes in this one. We can't win games like this with our Manu-less offense
Marcus Williams - Call me "intrigued" to see what this guy can do. Will Pop play him tonight?

I wish Pop starts Kurt or Gooden instead of Red Rocket. Carlos Boozer is just gonna eat him up in the post. I wish Pop would really change the starting 5 to a sensible playoff rotation. Fin and Matt really belong on the bench. I wish the news of Manu not coming back this season didn’t spread throughout the NBA like wildfire. We could at least have the other teams thinking and shaking in their boots. I wish we can win the NBA title this year. I wish I were making these wishes during Christmas season but unfortunately, coming up shortly, is the beginning of the end of our season. Since I live in Vegas and it is 24-7 booze service, I’ll go liquor up in depression before the game starts. There’s always next season folks…go… spurs… go…..Sigh

This game is huge! Since Manu is out I find myself rooting against certain teams more fervently given that we have little to no shot at a title. The main team I root against is the Lakers. I want nothing more than for Duncan to end up with more rings than all his contemporaries-especially Kobe. So the reason this game is huge in my eyes is because the Jazz have the best shot(in the west) at knocking off the Lakers and I would love to see it happen in the 1st round because Bynum will not be fully adjusted yet. The deeper into the playoffs the Lakers go the stronger they are going to get. The Jazz need to get knocked into the 8 seed and we can do it to them.

We will win this. The Jazz have not won in SA since 99. So history is on our side. We are a little banged up but heck we still have TP!

It is going to come down to three point shooting as well as point guard play. Tony will have a huge game. Bonner will need to have the same output he did in Utah!

I highly doubt we win. Winning on the road is hard enough, but I don’t think we’ve won there since the Hoover administration.

We sucked last year on the road...

and suck even more this year on the road. I think we have two road wins against teams with a winning record and one of them was against the Sixers, so it hardly should even count. I wish you could explain it to us because we sure as hell can’t figure it out.

i don’t think the waifs get much play on major commercial radio, but triple j, which is a government funded station, plays them regularly (and probably the others as well, as the station is a big supporter of local music).

Utah is now the 8th seed. Let’s hope it stays that way, so they can physically abuse the Lakers in the first round. Then [fingers crossed] Portland gets them in the 2nd, when they’re vulnerable.

besides, they can catch the Moonmen and throw them down to our level in the first round. That would be very nice, but it depends on Portland winning tonight. They actually look fully capable of getting the 2 seed.
