Manu Out For The Rest of Season/Playoffs
Well, this just about sucks.
How about this press release?
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that guard Manu Ginobili will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 regular season as well as the 2009 NBA Playoffs.
Ginobili felt stiffness in his lower right leg during the Spurs-Cavaliers game in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon. Following the game he returned to San Antonio. Earlier today, in San Antonio, he underwent a CT scan and an MRI. The examinations showed an increased marrow edema and a stress fracture in his right distal fibula.
No timeline has been determined for Ginobili’s return to the court.

Manu Out For The Rest of Season/Playoffs
This Season has been going from bad to worse. The news about Manu was not a complete surprise, he just wasn’t playing with his usual snap and vigor. Next I expect to hear Timmy is shutting it down for the season. He hasn’t been himself for weeks now.
gdmfsob
what a frustrating season. i honestly believe, with the lineup we have right now and a fully healthy team, we’re good enough to take the lakers. but no manu and a hobbled tim…yeah, right.
fuck.

booo :(
these news suck
season is officially over
maybe we’ll win one round? bah, who cares. it’s championship or bust
and it begs the obvious question, seeing as its the exact same bone that sidelined him a couple of months back – did he come back too soon? it was a “stress reaction” to his right distal fibula, now its a stress fracture of the same bone….
by sleep research facility on Apr 6, 2009 6:44 PM CDT reply actions
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of those things where the stress reaction was going to be fracture almost no matter what but Manu talked them into letting him give it a try anyway.
If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
I dont know the definition of a stress reaction, but in the situation you describe, can a stress reaction heal properly without becoming a fracture?
For all interested
Just found this explaining the difference. It sounds like a reaction and the fracture are almost the same thing, just a fracture is bigger bigger and more detectable than a reaction. Almost like a reaction is a pre-fracture.
If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a non-working cat.
It seems Manu probably should have been shut down for the season when this initially happened if they were to err on the side of caution. But I’m no doctor just a man who knows how to use google and wikipedia.

I don’t know what to say. I’m shocked. I wish we could’ve just not made the playoffs, to avoid the agony of losing. Now every playoff team in the West is licking their chops wanting to play a depleted Spurs team. I don’t think I can hang around the postseason for long. This is just sad.

Too much International Ball
Will Manu finally take a summer off and rest his body for f’s sake! It’s too early yet, but a big free agent market this offseason. Any chance that we consider trading Manu?
He’ll be a 32 year old unrestricted free agent next season. Seems like we have to make a decision. New contract or consider a trade, or else we may lose him altogether in 2010? His injury prognosis and rehab will obviously be huge factors. I would assume that he can 100% heal from this type of injury.
If anything, I think he retires at the end of next season. Assuming he does play, Pop will not want to trade him at that point because at 32 he’ll be nearing the age Pop favors his players to be. 35+

There’s no way Manu will retire next season, unless this injury is career-ending. He’s said as much.

Now all we need is a little Energon... and a lot of luck.

You're being sarcastic...
…but that’s pretty much what he did this last summer. If Argentina were playing in the Olympics this summer, I wouldn’t put it past him.

At the very least...
…the team should be kind of used to the idea or playing without him. He’s been injured/day-to-day/questionable for a HUGE chunk of the season. A rotation without him should already be set. It’s not.

Not trying to be insensitive
But will Popovich rest Duncan/Parker more or less now? Like say……for the upcoming Portland game on a SGBABA.

I’m sad, but at the same time, I’m curious to see how the Spurs handle themselves in the wake of this news. We already know that Timmy isn’t all there. We also know that the big three won’t be here forever, and that their peak as a whole may already have passed. We were going to have to face this transition sooner or later . . . we just wanted it to be later. Time to figure out how to win a different way!
I can’t imagine not wanting to watch the Spurs no matter who is playing. If we get out of the first round, I’ll be pleased. If we get past the second round, I’ll be thrilled.
Manu, go take a rest — a lonnnnng one, please? And come back in fighting shape this fall?
I’m not saying the Spurs will win a championship this year without Manu, but does anyone think the Spurs can’t still beat the Nuggies or any of the other western playoff teams besides the Lakers?
Utah or maybe Portland could get lucky but the rest of those teams are losers. I know it ain’t rings but it still might be fun to watch.
I agree. Will the team fold, or come out fighting and still make a statement by getting to the WCF? The WCF is definitely still attainable.
I guess it mostly depends on Timmy’s health. Can’t beat the Lakers without Manu but the rest seem beatable.

This is bad. So much for the “odd numbered year championship”. I guess we’ll look forward to 2011 for another trophy. Hopefully by then, we’ll have another younger version of Tim Duncan playing alongside with the current Timmeh. Kinda like Tim and David in the old days. And yes, I prefer them old days when we had the twin towers and played real Spurs ball. Having Timmy in the middle and 3 point shooters around him ’aint gonna get us a championship.
A few? I hope you’re not referring to my comment about Timmy in the middle with 3-point shooters around him. If you recall, the great Admiral played until 03 for our second trophy and Rasho Nesterovic helped clog the lane in 05, our third. Although I may say that we didn’t have another tower in the middle with Timmy for our 07 championship, we still drove in the lane to score and not jack up so many 3-pointers like we do now.
by Rude Defense on Apr 6, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
In 03 we were not a big three point shooting team, but who can forget the timely 3s by Steve Kerr? Granted without Duncan and Robinson we would not be close but timely three pointers were a part of the Spurs arsenal.
In 05 the Spurs were the 4th best 3pt shooting team in terms of percentage during the playoffs and in 07 they were the top team in term of 3pt%
2009-2010 they’ll be in the running.
"There's a thin line between to laugh with and to laugh at." - Richard Pryor
I sure hope so. We need another defensive and offensive “big” to help Timmy in the middle and match the LA Fakers, preferably someone young but I’d be satisfied with Camby or Rasheed Wallace next season.

Greatest week ever. I’m moving to another place and it’s been an effing headache. I follow Formula One and my team has had the worst start since the last decade. I sell stuff on ebay and now I’m getting complaints from buyers. The Betta fish I bought together with my significant other when she came over is dead. I twisted my neck yesterday and have to sit down and stand up like a 90 year old with arthritis. I had an argument with my gf over some stupid shit. And now this… What next? An effing earthquake?

Ferrari. Forza Ferrari! Two absolutely horrible races back to back. They ruined Raikkonen’s race with their decision to put full wets tires when it wasn’t raining yet. And Massa’s qualifying was an effing joke.
I think the race was great, until it had to stop for the rain. So yeah, it did suck. But that was Ecclestone’s fault, he started the race later to accommodate European viewers, so there was no margin for error. Because of course, who could’ve expected heavy rain in Malaysia…Oh wait, it happens every fucking day.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
I honestly stopped watching F1 when Schumacher retired, but I check on it from time to time. Ferrari’s dominance has been constantly curbed by rule changes and this obsession for parity just drove me out of the sport. I do like what they’ve done with the night race in the Singapore GP last year, though.
It’s crazy that Brawn-Honda is in the lead and Toyota hot on their tails — since when did you imagine that scenario happening? The racing gods must be finally conspiring against the traditional powers like Ferrari, McLaren and Renault… for three or four races, at least. Still, I am rooting for Ferrari, regardless of who their drivers are :)

Yeah, I don’t mind that the other teams are doing well, it mixes it up a little. The story of Brawn GP is incredible, I mean to go from scoring no points one year to winning back to back and two pole positions… The only thing is that they have the trick diffusers, they’re gonna rule on that next week to decide if they’re legal or not. If they’re not, there goes their advantage, if they are, expect McLaren and Ferrari to spend some serious money on getting their own diffusers.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
sorry to hear about your misfortune Hipuks, it sounds very familiar to how things happen to me. Everything bad happens to me all at once. All you can do it laugh

that decision to hold a twilight race was retarded. ecclestone really is an arrogant prick at times, anyone who’s been anywhere near the tropics would know that was a stupid decision. but no, tv ratings are more important than actually being able to finish the race.
that said, i did enjoy the race up until it was red-flagged. i’ve never been a fan of teams (other than hating mclaren cos ron dennis sucks), and since schumi retired i haven’t really been following any drivers (other than not wanting lewis to win cos i’m tired of all the fawning british press), so i can sort of watch the race without the heartache of seeing people fail. but with that said, i need to pick a new driver to follow…probably should care about webber seeing as he’s australian and all.

Webber isn’t a bad pick. The guy can race, and Red Bull is pretty fast this year, they’ve got good cars.
I don’t like McLaren or Lewis Hamilton either, people think ESPN fawning over Kobe or Chris Paul is bad…They should see they british press giving Hamilton the reach around. That being said, this year we’ll see how he competes with a crappy car for once in his career.
My tapeworm tells me what to do.
Irony, my friends, irony
Talk about irony: the one year the Suns might have been able to get past us, they don’t make the playoffs. Ha! Turn out the lights, the party’s over.
MayDay Call for the Admiral?
Could the Admiral come out of retirement? Heck, the Iceman can still shoot the rock too.
As a Blazer fan
Manu is one of my favorite players in the league and a joy to watch… it sucks that he is hurt.
Is Duncan still sitting on back to backs? If so, the Spurs will be very thin against GS and Portland.
draft dejuan blair
I get the feeling I’ll get to use my part-time Blazer fan status this year more than my full-time Spurs fan status. [cries]
Pop needs to just sit TD and let Parker take the team as far as he can. Doesn’t make any sense to let TD hurt himself any more if we don’t have a legit shot at the trophy.
Please get better for real this time, Manu.
tendinosis is no joke
but you’re welcome aboard the bandwagon for the rest of the year… I know I rooted for the Spurs a lot of the years that the Blazers had no chance.

This has been one of the strangest years in my nearly 20 as a spurs fan, my hopes for the playoffs have been dashed, and we dont even have a 1st round pick to look forward to

Manu is my hero. That being said, I think this is better than having him play 50 percent through the rest of what’s to come.
Also, this team needs an identity. If mason jr. can return to form, if Bonner can hit open shots, and if Duncan can play through the pain, this team can still punch somebody in the mouth come playoff time.
A championship looks much less likely, but I’d still like to see them fight it out.
And when I say punch someone in the mouth, i mean that literally. And I mean Kobe Bryant.
+1 on the Kobe part.

one thing this team has been missing
someone to bust an opposing player in the mouth, literally or otherwise. manu is the closest thing we have to that. bruce is somewhat like that, but rarely gets any pt. i miss the players like kevin willis and danny ferry.
i can’t believe i just typed that….
I found this article
by Daniel Corvalan M.D. in the Argentine sports newspaper “Ole”:
http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2009/04/07/basquet/01892914.html
Those of you that speak Spanish can read it on your own; for those who don’t I’ll give you a summary:
Basically he says that for this type of fracture you don’t need surgery, the bone heals on its own after 4-5 weeks aprox.
Then he’ll have to do rehab for about 2 months, taking it easy.
The good news is that this type of injury shouldn’t cause him any problem in the long run. Once the bone heals, that’ll be it. .
And he finished by saying that Ginobili probably came back too soon, and that was what might have caused the injury.
Of course we’ll have to wait for the official briefing from Spurs doctors, but if this is the case, he should be OK next season
THIS NEWS MAKES ME WANT 2 SHOOT MYSELF IN THE HEAD TWICE !!!!!!!!!! BUT WITH THAT SAID ITS NOT THAT SUPRISING JUST BY SEEING HOW THEY WERE PLAYING LATELY, MY CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES 4 THEM HAVE BEEN DWINDLING !!!!!!!!! MANU N TIM JUST NEVER LOOKED THE SAME AFTER COMING BACK FROM THEIR INJURIES AND THE TEAM JUST HASN’T BEEN THE SAME TEAM NEITHER THEIR DEFENSE HAS BEEN MORE THAN SUB-PAR N THATS THEIR BREAd N BUTTER THEIR OFFENSE IS SHADY AT TIMES AND THEY BEEN FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE 3PT SHOT THEN TRYING 2 GET INTO THE PAINT….POOR TONY!!!!!!! I BET HE WISHES THEY WERE BACK 2 BEING THE DOMAINT TEAM THEY ONCE WERE.. OH WELL HOPEFULLY NEXT YR OR THE YEAR AFTER THAT WHO KNOWS ???

So yall are giving up?
We’re Spurs fans! C’mon! I think the team realized “Manu’s out, time to step up”
If we got to the finals and won……oh geez it’s late. Night.
well – i will be in mourning over this for a while. honestly, watching manu live last friday, you could tell that he just wasnt right. i didnt detect a limp or anything, but he just wasnt the same manu. i just wrote it off to rust and shape, but maybe this injury was a factor.
can the spurs win it without manu? sure. all things are possible. its just that fewer things are liklely.
this is definitely the cherry on top of a difficult season. i wont be surprised with anything that happens the rest of the way, but i gotta figure the spurs to be a quicker out than we had hoped. hoobled tim, no manu – that does spell doom.
trying to look on the bright side, i do see that the spurs did make some gains in key areas. we did pick up very useful younger guys to play in the rotation with mason, hill and gooden. seems we still need some more depth and we definitely need someone to step up on the defenseive end to fill the bruce bowen role.
is it a coincidence that bruce fades into the sunset right about the same time the spurs struggle defensively? no way can we hang in the play-offs with mike finley trying to check ther opponents top gun. its just not going to happen.
anyway, this sucks out loud – but i do hope that the FO will keep this bunch together for more than just this one season.
