PtR Quick Cap: It's Over. The Season Is Over.

Not much to say about the game.  The Mavs shot well, got to the line, we didn't get to the line, shot poorly from 3, and played no defense.

Come on in and discuss.

No need to panic, but we can’t sit still either. Hill was a find, Mason was a plus most of the time this season, and I can see good things for Gooden, if we resign him. And the two biggest pluses – Timmeh and Tony. And then there’s that Brazilian dude who should be healthier next year.

Although I’m currently a proponent of the grape juice, we still have the basic nucleus of a great team. Tim, Tony & Manu. We just need to get rid of the dead weight and and bring on the youngsters.

We’re really solid and deep at the 1 and 2, with Parker/Manu/Hill/Mason. We’re also good at the 5, obviously, with Timmy, though we can no longer rely on him to dominate.

We’re absolutely terrible at the 3 and 4. That has to improve. Is there anyone on the Toros who could play there? Hairston is too small. Maybe Marcus Williams, or James Gist, or Yawn, or random free agent (Trevor Ariza?). If we can get someone even passable there, Bowen and Finley will be serviceable in limited roles as backups.

One thing we really have to remember is how different this team is with a healthy Manu Ginobili. Our future seasons are not hopeless. Like Stampler said earlier in the season, we have 3 of the 25 or so NBA players that actually matter.

That doesn’t mean that we can just sit back and hope that everything gets better. But there is reason for optimism.

He was hitting his jumper though.

He was also posting up just fine, did a couple of turnaround jumpers, passed the ball when he was doubled, hit the bank shot…

What if we actually get a big able to help him corral down rebounds?

by xman130 on Apr 28, 2009 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem is that Pop is enamored of big men who shoot the 3, thanks to Horry. With Horry, he had a guy who could do that plus play useful defense and rebound against other bigs. Now he’s searching for the next version of Horry, so we get pale imitations like Bonner or Tolliver. Failing that, I think he’d rather play a small (like Fin or Udoka) who can (allegedly) hit a three, rather than a big who can’t.

Tolliver at least played hard and was a good passer off the high post. If his shots went in with more frequency, he probably would have been a good addition. He was a good rebounder too and brought some energy.

Our window is closing, and I don’t care if we crash and burn after Manu and Timmy are done, so I don’t think we need to get younger. We need to get bigger and better.

I’d prefer him than Gooden, but unless he really wants to be here it 1) wont happen and 2) wouldn’t be productive anyway.

And the experts said Timmy couldn’t get it done. If you wear a Spurs jersey and your name is not Duncan, Parker, Bowen or Hill (and what the hell, Thomas), hide in shame.

by SpurredOn on Apr 28, 2009 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

We need a guy who can block shots. Did you guys notice how they killed us on the midrange game? Where they would pass up the long jumper, drive it in a little and take a higher percentage shot?

by alamobro on Apr 28, 2009 11:33 PM CDT reply actions

That’s not a shot-blocking issue. That is the exact shot that teams take when there are shotblockers to worry about. If not, they take it all the way to the rim.

That is about piss-poor rotations off of double teams. Therefore the close out comes too fast and leaves a driving lane.

I'm comfortable winning -- Emmanuel Ginobili

by pollackj on Apr 28, 2009 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I also think they paid too much attention to Barea and Kidd driving the lane. Make those guys finish tough layups, don’t help off to leave open 3s.

the problem is that half the time we didn’t even run the players off the three point line, we wouldn’t even run out to them…thus all the 3’s we gave up in the game (and this year for that matter).

by xman130 on Apr 28, 2009 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

The defense was porous, agreed.

But i didnt see anyone bothered when they would take it closer to the rim…..tim cannot rotate fast enough anymore

by wangalusa on Apr 28, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

My thoughts on our needs

A big who can block shots (Maybe Ian?)
A 3/swing that can guard and make a few open shots (someone like Ariza would be perfect, or if Hill suddenly grew about 4-5 inches).

by xman130 on Apr 28, 2009 11:39 PM CDT reply actions

For our 3/Swing, what we need is Bruce Bowen. Someone who can defend and then hit a shot. The fact that the Spurs FO has been trying to find a developmental “Bruce Replacement” for the past 4 years is telling. Unfortunately, where are they going to find one? There aren’t many players as reliable on D as Bruce.

Agree on the athletic big who can block shots and rebound. It’s what everyone’s been saying all year. Unfortunately, these guys don’t grow on trees and tend to be way overpriced. That’s why the Spurs better desperately hope they find one in their developmental group.

Being a grandmother at this age happens when you have your kids young, then your kids (older than I was) have theirs young. It is a big cosmic karma thing that pays you back for making your mother a grandmother at a younger age. Cool thing is you get a nickname like Omie from the little one. When I asked her why she called me that, she explained that I was her other mommie. She is the cool one.

Who comes back?

Duncan, Parker, Manu, Hill, Bowen for sure.

Mason, Ime, Fab, maybe KT are likely.

Everything else is open. Can Ian get healthy? Do we go after Shee and/or Ariza? I know one thing: outside of our core guys, we have too many regular season players. No one other than Hill seemed willing or excited to step up and score or get dirty on D. In a playoff series. Can’t have that and hope to advance. I’d rather win ugly and be “boring” than play like the Mavs and Suns.

by SpurredOn on Apr 28, 2009 11:48 PM CDT reply actions

I’d go after Ariza. You take a main player from your number one opponent and gain an athletic wing player who can defend and shoot. Win/Win. Sheed would be nice but I’d go for Ariza first.

The Glory Days arent necessarily over

Timmy still has some good years left, Manu can hopefully get healthy and be a 6th man of the year contender, and Tony is one of the top 5 PGs in the league.

The Front Office really needs to Do Work this offseason to compliment and help those three before Timmy and Manu really get over the hill

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Next Season

What a frustrating season. We coulda been a contender. I agree that , if Tim and Manu come back fully healed, we’ll be in the thick of things next season, but if the last series showed anything, it’s that we need some help. I think Gooden doomed himself from playing and coming back when he said publicly that he played his best ball with Timmy on the court. Pop would take that as a rebuke of the way he had been playing him, essentially as Timmy’s backup. Obviously, none of us know if Ian is part of the answer and hopefully, we’ll get to find out early. Earlier in the season, a lot of PtR folks talked about the possibility of landing Camby. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. But watching this series and going back and watching our dismantling of the Cavs in ‘07, I think Camby just might work. Does anyone know what the numbers look like? Most importantly, one can only hope that Pop’s love affair with Finley and Bonner as starters will cool over the summer. People talk about our problems in the 3rd quarter. Bullshit. It seems like every game we lost began with an opponent’s explosion from the gate. Halfway thru the first we’d be behind by 10 – 15 points. With our age issues, it simply takes too much energy to come back from that hole. And that would always be our margin of defeat. And I attribute a good part of that to Pop starting Fin and Matt. God love ’em, but they are not starters on any NBA team, and most certainly not the Spurs.

by agutierrez on Apr 29, 2009 7:51 AM CDT reply actions

Good Point

I’m not big on counter factual, but retrospect, the Camby trade shows that the FO isn’t stupid. The 3-point shooting faltered but the lack of shot-blocking/rebound was the Spurs’ one irreparable flaw. This series would have been much different if it hadn’t have been for Barea’s freedom to get to the hoop and Dampiers’ pushing everyone around in the paint. The Spurs had a solid gameplan for the Mavs starts. Those other two were the difference.

by CMoney on Apr 29, 2009 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Huh?

With all due respect Neuwaldegg, you say you think the FO did well in not going after Camby, but then your analysis of the series is that Barea’s getting to the hoop and Dampiers’ work were what doomed us. Isn’t that what Camby would have brought, an inside defender, shot blocker and rebounder when Timmy was pulled away from the basket?

by agutierrez on Apr 29, 2009 8:34 AM CDT reply actions

I think he is making the point that the pursuit of the Camby trade shows the FO isn’t stupid. They knew what we needed and tried to get it.

I thought the Lakers were done when Shaq left. They thenmissed the playoffs when Kobe was injured. Then they developed a few young guys and traded for the other pieces (Odom, Gasol, Ariza, Brown) and are off and running. We need to keep developing Hill, maybe bring back Hariston, sign Sheed, and get Ian healthy to develop him for a full season. Then get Tiago in a year. Remember, we won 54 games with significant injuries, a new 2 guard, rookie backup PG and old bench. Next year we’ll be better.

by SpurredOn on Apr 29, 2009 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Good analysis. I’m not all that bleek about next season either. We know that Tim, Tony and Manu aren’t going anywhere. That’s where it starts, and ulitmately ends. Those three carry us to victory. It’s the inbetween that is the problem.
(In no order)
I know Rasheed is old, but I believe he can be a good role player for us. I think he wants to be here. I agree we need to develope Hill. Lots of potential there. We should keep Mase, though only as a spot up shooter. He cannot handle the ball. Bowen…I couldn’t let Bruce go. He’s still good on D, and thats important. Finley, Bonner- gone. Sorry. I know Fin’s given us some good years, but he and Bonner have proven they are not reliable and consistent. They’ve proven that. Mase is kind of the same way, useful only as a spotup shooter, but we have more invested in him. Fab, Ime, gone. Gooden, I’d say keep around. He can rebound and score, and I don’t think he ever really had a chance to develope with this team yet. KT…eh, keep. He had a good season. Ariza, while I can’t honestly say I like the guy (based solely b/c he’s a Laker and has stung us), I’ll take him on our team. We’ve all been on that side of things (see Robert Horry- Suns-Rockets-Lakers) He can play.
(I think that’s all I have for now.)

I was negative about the 2008-2009 season before it tipped off. I said things like that would be lucky to win 50 games and didn’t think George Hill would be able to contribute. Six months later, I’ve done a 360, this team will win nearly 60 games in 2009-2010 and they will be in title contention. I’m also a big believer in George Jesse Hill Jr. and think he’ll be able to give you 20-25 solid minutes a game next season. So this run ain’t over.

True. Most “experts” I read had us at 46-50 wins and a 5 seed. with Manu only missing the early games. Despite much worse, we win 54 and tie for the 2nd best record. Next year Hill won’t be a rookie, Mason will be in his second year in our system, TD & TP will be rested from the season ending before May 1 (wiping tear away), Manu will be back and the anger from this embarassament will fuel these guys. All this is before we make upgrades over Fin, Bonner, JV and Gooden.

Pop, TD & Manu are the most competetive SOB’s you can can on a team. You better believe the strategy meetings will be a focused affair and we’ll come back stronger, hungrier and yes, more athletic.

I’ve said it time and again to people I know, and I stand by it still. Of all the players in this league, there are still no three players I’d rather go to battle with than Tim, Tony and Manu.

It does not appear that Tony Parker is going to be rested, he is committed to the French national team over the summer. They failed to qualify directly for the EuroBasket tournament and have to play a qualifying tournament, so he might have an extra workload. And if you thought that the Spurs usage of Tony in the Dallas series was a lot, you have not seen the French play, their entire offensive sets are give ball to Tony, watch Tony, jog back to the defensive end, repeat. It’s brutal, and one thing I have noticed this season is that his stamina isn’t that great. Hopefully, he avoids any major injury because the FSM knows we can’t afford any more injuries to our Big 3.

i was super-sick last night and not able to get in on the game thread. heck, i’m just now able to sit upright for more than 10 minutes ata time. what a shitty shitty way to end the season.

one thought did keep crossing my mind as i lay on the couch sweating out my fever with 4-5 covers on top of me. it was the shovel. for the last several years, the spurs used a shovel to bury all of their opponents. i mean, just bury them. to me, you always knew they were going to win all the tough games. they were gonna keep pounding the rock until it split. some of that was still there with timmy lighting up dallas to tune tune of 8-9 made FGs in a row – but it was never enough. we never got enough of theat “spurs basketball” that we all love and everyone else hates.

last night was different, our boys were using a shovel all night, but it was for trying to dig themselves out of a hole. it was the same kind of digging that our boys had been doing most of the year, really.

from here on into the summer, i am hoping they use that shovel to move some of the dead weight that kept us chained to the bottom in this series. i love some of theese men, but at minimum we gotta cleanse the roster of guys like ime, jv, bruce, fin, matty, KT and fab. we still need a back-up for Tony and another solid big – but forgodsakes, its time to bring in some other guys that can play D.

sadly, only a fraction of those moves will probably be made. and we will be contractually obliged to some too. but our run can definitely continue with the right mix of guys behind the healthy big 3. i’m bummed about right now, but not totally bummed about the future. these guys are NOT gonna stand for getting bounced out in the first round.

by bones on Apr 29, 2009 3:21 PM CDT reply actions

Keep Bowen and either KT or Fab. Ime is fine as a defending/rebounding role player. I agree on the rest, especially a backup for Tony. Hill needs to take minutes from Manu and Bruce not be the #2 PG.

Your shovel analogy sounds quite apt. The Mavs never had to dig out of anything. They never trailed in the 4th quarter of games 3, 4 or 5. Think about that. Never trailed, no pressure. The one game they did? IN game 2 they couldn’t shoot straight. We rarely put them down and never kept them their when we did. The PtR mantra that has been our foundation went away all season. Gotta get back to that.

by SpurredOn on Apr 29, 2009 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

+1 about putting pressure on the mavs and how they reacted. our guys do that to a lot of teams. that is the spurs basketball we know and love.

by bones on Apr 30, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Not Bowen and Kurt. They can still play.

i tend to agree with you about both of those guys – and i may have gotten a little carried away, but it is also time to make a big change in the personnel running the system.

i love bruce bowen. he will forever be one of my all time favorites. he’s the ultimate team player and one of its leaders. his face should appear on any photo that marks the spurs success over these times. however, if it were up to me, he’d go. i am willing to accept bruce as the 10th or 11th man next season if we cant find another younger body to contribute.

Maybe your sickness messed with the mojo? Sorry to hear it man, I like getting rid of everyone but Ime. He plays good D and his shot is getting better, he just needs a stronger mental grasp of the game (see: turning ball over when Duncan hasn’t missed a shot in 2nd half and is calling for it wide open 5 feet from the basket).

KT can still play, but I don’t like paying him 4.5mil for little offensive contribution and not many minutes. Some night he can hit the 10 foot baseline jumper, and other nights he’s way off. We need someone big and athletic that can play alongside Tim. Sadly, I don’t think that magical player is available in the foreseeable future.

by One4theThumb on Apr 29, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

the sickness has definitely messed with my own personal mojo. it was about the only thing to make getting bounced by the mavs worse.

The next poll I put up will be about who will win the Thuggets and Mavs series, and by how much. After all of the first round series are complete, I’ll be re-doing the “Who Will Come Out of the East” poll, and do one for the West.

If ya'll don't get Sheed

you could probably pick up Frye w/ the Biannual exception or a fraction of the MLE.
He’s a good player if he gets his minutes, he just doesn’t give Portland anything LMA doesn’t and Outlaw is more effective as a mismatch 4 then as a 3.

Also, Shawn Marion would be pretty awesome in S.A.

Marion is too much of a “me” player who cares about “getting mine.” It’s what soured his relationship in Phoenix. If he ever grows up and cares more about team goals he’d be welcome.

Please hear me out

Let me start off by saying Thank you. I have gone on other team’s blogs and the debates have been very heated. But recently a post was up on the Lakers blog and I just had to come here not as an enemy but just as a basketball fan. I have a friend who is a die hard Spurs fan. But, we never argue about which team is better. I have so much respect for the Spurs. Now, I am not here expecting brownie points or anything like that. But as a fan of the game you cannot help but admire a great team. I cannot believe to admit this but I seriously appreciate Pop’s coachins style. I seen him once call a time out in a game and he just got into Duncan’s face. Someone on the Lakers post said it best when they said that Laker fans hated the Spurs but mostly because of the threat they posed to the Lakers. But, believe me, any Laker fan that says, “I wish we met the Spurs in the playoffs” is a dam liar! Maybe this year yes but not prior to that. Either way, I love the Lakers but respect the Spurs 100% and although I do not believe this team’s best days are behind them like the media wants to suggest I am not looking forward to any additions this team might make for next year. Good luck and sincerely speaking I truly believe that this teams has been one of the best coached teams and a classy champion. THANK YOU!

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Apr 29, 2009 10:14 PM CDT reply actions

With that, I can honestly say I wish your team the best of luck and I appreciate the post.

They made an excellent move getting Shannon Brown, the small kind of move that puts a team over the top. We could’ve used him as a backup to TP. Your second round series should be entertaining but a WCF vs the Nuggets would likely be an entertaining series to watch. Good luck and hope to see your guys in next season’s WCF.

by SpurredOn on Apr 29, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Thank you sir

I appreciate you giving the time to read my post. Nothing but admiration for the Spurs. Truly mean that. Same to you and your team.

One more thin

SpurredOn, I just read your comment on S. Marion and believe me you are 100% right. The ironic part is that today I started reading that Suns book, 7 seconds or less about the Suns and before I read it I would of said that I would trade LO for Marion. Not any more. That dude is a head case and probably one of the most insecure on the team. I can see why the Suns traded him. I wouldn’t trade him for Bowen. No matter what his age is.

by PURPLE AND GOLD FOR LIFE on Apr 29, 2009 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

No surprise how guys like Marion spoil chemistry and get you just close enough to lose when the going gets tough. They’re never willing to take that extra step for the team that often puts them over the top.

Though I don’t believe we have anyone like that on the Spurs, it’s why this season and ending have been so tough. We didn’t play the Spurs way. Win or lose there’s been a method to Pop’s madness and a way we expect to play. What this year has been, since opening night, is not it.
