To Fan or not to Fan
There has been some discussion about whether or not it would be better for the Spurs to go ahead and lose tomorrow night or to try and win out and make a run. I think Stampler made a good point here that it might be better for the Spurs if we took a beating in the first round of the playoffs so that the FO and Pop would get the idea that we need to do something besides what we have been doing. I tend to agree with Stampler. Pop and the FO needs to shook up. No, not fired, but the bottom line is they have a few questionable moves at best. Let's see what they do when we don't just stroll to the Western Conference Finals...or even past the 1st round.
Now as for those who are saying: "It doesn't matter, I want my Spurs to win it all, and I will root for them period." That's great! I want the Spurs to win. As a friend said, "If the Spurs win this year it will be the most impressive championship they've had." I totally agree with this. I want the Spurs to win and I will root and hope they do until they are totally out.
All that being said, these two ideas are not mutually exclusive. I want the Spurs to win, but if they don't, I sure as hell hope the FO is seeing that we need help for our big 3. These guys can carry the team, but if they guys that are roll players can't guard or make open shots we need something else. To say "Don't root for our team", is wrong. However, I understand the frustration with this coaching staff and front office.
My whole point is we are all rooting for our team. If they don't win in the playoffs, let's root for them to win in the off-season.

I think what happened here is that people confuse the long view of the situation with not wanting our team to win. Of course we all want the team to win, even if it made more sense for us to lose in the first round, it would be impossible for us who think that to actively root against the Spurs, or to not want our team to win next game, and then the next after that, and so on.
Somehow though, the pendulum has moved to the other extreme position, and it’s seen as a virtue around here to hope hope hope. Problems for next year? Hope. Are we done this season? More hope. Have the FO and Pop made some bad moves? How dare you criticize them, plus hope.
It’s gotten to the point that that’s the only accepted view on PtR, you don’t hope? You backstabbing traitor fair weather motherfucker. You are connected to reality in the faintest way? How the hell dare you, we’re gonna give you a hope enema.
The so called realists don’t want the team to lose, we want to be the team to win, but we realize that isn’t possible this year, and we aren’t afraid of some humiliation in the first round if it means being better prepared for next year. We gotta keep the eye on the big prize, that isn’t the second round, it’s the ring.

that hope enema sounds like a wild time

the Spurs do not defeat you so much as they grind you into tiny shards of psychological wreckage.

I certainly don’t think you’re a backstabbing traitor, Hipuks. (That’d be CMoney when he wanted to trade Manu.)
What I don’t agree with is:
a) that losing in the first round would be helpful at all, or function as some kind of wakeup call for the FO and Pop and the fans and FSM;
b) that the FO and Pop even need that wakeup call, and that their mistakes are plentiful and the reason the Spurs won’t win (?) the championship this year;
c) that we need to take every single game in this postseason as a prelude to the inevitable loss, and thus getting excited about our chances is nothing delusion and hope, when injuries and momentum swings and sheer luck are such an important part of this game, and when we have two absolutely brilliant players;
d) that you’re connected to reality, and I’m not;
I think that as always everyone likes to be right. I admit I’m most likely wrong, but that’s the only I can enjoy watching my team play: hope for the best, hope they’ll pull it off, hope hope hope. As many people consider this ridiculous as people criticize you, Hipuks, for being such a killjoy.
Live and let live, guys. One way or another, this season is probably coming to an end. Let’s use this to turn into an even stronger web-ish community – it’ll make the next season that much more enjoyable.

This is probably coming to an end? Are you fucking crazy?This is the start of three-peat. We just gotta hope every single other player in the NBA gets injured but the Spurs. It could happen.

How’d you figure that out if you can’t read?

We're paying the piper
I suppose, for neglecting the draft (for the most part) and relying on the big three while “shrewdly” stashing away foreigners. So now we’re augmenting the big three with mediocre role players
And yes, the Scola trade was ridiculous. Imagine this:
Duncan, Scola, Ginobili, Parker, Barbosa, Hill, Mason Jr, Splitter
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I forgot what we traded Barbosa for already, but I thought we got the better end of that deal. Can someone refresh me? And yea, the Scola trade looks worse evey year.
Fuck you, fate! - Latin D
I don’t understand why people keep bringing up Barbosa. That was a sign and trade…

Well it was a poor decision
much like the Scola trade, and neither really resulted in anything positive, the Scola situation was purely financial

Barbosa trade
Was for a 1st rounder from PHX, which I believe was then used to get Nazr Mohammed. So the question would be if you think we couldve won in 2005 without him
In those playoffs he started 23 games, chipping in 7 pts and 6 boards, so tough to say, it was either him or Nesterovic.
In the 03-04 Playoffs Rasho averaged 5.9 pts and 5.5 boards….so its a toss up I suppose
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Nazr was a big part of our beating Detroit and the Wallace boys. Plus Phoenix could not match up with all the size. I’d still do the trade. Can’t assume that Barbosa would be the same in our system. He has to play reckless and on the run yet he plays no defense and is not the brightest guy. I could see us celebrating his scoring before bemoaning his 4th quarter mistakes that cost us a playoff game.
True
but given our dearth of scoring options this year, id take that risk
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
No way would I give up the 2005 championship run in exchange for Barbosa on this year’s depleted squad.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
I think we couldve done it with Rasho
There playoff stats weren’t that different, but Nazr was a welcomed addition at the time. I suppose the real complaint shouldve been they gave up a 1st rounder for that bum
