I believe. I have hope.
In a little more than 24 hours our San Antonio Spurs will meet the dallas mavericks in Game 5 of their first round playoff series.
I know that our situation looks bleak and our mood is dreary. We all know that the chances of making it thru this round will be incredibly difficult if not near impossible. I don't need to read anymore of the national pundits or listen to another minute of LBKN analysts to remind me of our dismal situation... It is what it is. Recriminations and solutions are all conversations to be had at a future date.
Instead, I'd like to issue a challenge to all the passionate, opinionated and highly intelligent participants and readers of PtR. Starting today I want us all to forget about the future and deal in the here and now.
I want us all to stand together and give this team just a small portion of what they have given to us for so many years. The success, the joy, the happiness of the past 4 championships pales in comparison to our current doubts and fears.
Our team, Our Spurs, our beloved basketball heroes deserve our loyalty and optimist until that last flicker of a chance is gone and buried.
I believe. I have hope. I am a Spurs fan.

Well said Bella! We really need to get this pic of Tim on PTR permanently. Let’s do this.

Negative People Suck
Well said Bella!
Being a fan means supporting your team – good or bad, win or lose.
Constructive criticism is always healthy, as is a critical eye towards organizational moves.
But bitching and pointing fingers and calling for heads to roll is not only often times short-sighted and simple-minded, it is really disrespectful and unwarranted. Especially for a team and organization that brought us fans the 4 banners pictured above – in only nine years time!!!
There are plenty of reasons that the Spurs may very well lose in the first round of the playoffs this year, and there are certainly no shortage of people willing to tell you exactly why in their expert opinion.
But those who are being so negative, pessimistic and just plain hating on the Spurs now , simply because the team didn’t have more success this season, just seem…I don’t know…“fair weather”-ish in a way.

To me, this is what it means to be a fan. To continue to follow, cheer, hope and pull for the victory even when the chances are miniscule at best.
Everybody has their own definition; their own way to live out being a fan. But I wouldn’t feel like a fan if the Spurs came back and I didn’t see it happen when I had the chance. It would cheapen it for me if I chose to skip Game 5 and they came back to win it and the series. I’d feel like I wasn’t a part of it — like I’d jumped on the bandwagon. I’ve been following them all year long and for years before, but I’d still feel that way. Just like I’d feel cheap if I gave up on a game with 2 minutes left and down 10 and we came back. It would be like I hadn’t really cheered for them, as though they weren’t my team. I would have missed the whole reason for being a fan, to see your team come through against the odds.
I’m not saying this is the best or only way to be a Spurs fan. But it is my way.
Thanks for posting this, Bella. I’m with you.

Well put JRW. I’m not sure but I suspect that some Spurs fans haven’t been around since before the Tim Duncan era and are a bit spoiled. I remember very well ‘94 and ’95 when Hakeem took out the Spurs’ family collective heart and stomped all over it. Maybe that’s why when this Duncan led Dynasty came around I have always been one to hope and cheer until the final whistle blows. Like you, it seems strange not to be that way. The sour times make the winning so much sweeter. And so it is, if we come back to win this series it will be the sweetest series win in a long time. And if we lose then so be it but in the mean time I’m going to root like hell for the Spurs.

blazer fan here
The blazers are in a similar situation, they worked their asses off for 54 wins, but so did your spurs, so we had to be paired up with our worst matchup, the rockets. Homecourt advantage was overrated i guess.
Now, we are down 3-1, on our heels, granted we don’t have the experience and resolve of your team, but we are a slow paced offense that leans on a one man recking crew to get the job done, sound familiar?
Good Luck I hope your team takes the Mavs to 7 games and gives y’all some hope.
"The refs have caused a bird-pig flu pandemic"
Nice to see a Blazer fan around, I wish ya’ll the best of luck against the Rockets as well…
And very well said bellasa, I also have hope that the Spurs will push the Mavs to seven games & hopefully take care of buisness from there on.

Can anyone get this message to our guys on the bench?? Manu perhaps? I know he has a bum ankle right now but how’s his enthusiasm? Have they lost hope?? We can argue all we want to as Spur’s fans, but really, where does that get us?? Our team??
If the Spurs have lost hope then all hope is lost. Yea, they get a lot of their fire from the fans, but what about their own teammates? I don’t know about any of you but I have seen a lot less cheering from the bench when the going gets tough. Less of the coming head to head and saying “It’s not over!! We can DO this!! Get back out there and destroy them!!”
Instead, I see them sitting back on the bench with a shocked or beaten expression. Where did the team spirit go?? That is what worries me. I have not lost hope, but, have they?
Don’t get me wrong… I will be cheering my guys on til the bitter end or radiant glory of a fifth ring.

I don’t see why there’s all this realism vs. hope animosity right now. In my view, you can have both. I still believe with all my heart that the Spurs can win this series, but have my doubts about whether they will. I always believe in this team ‘til the bitter end, but what they’ve shown so far hasn’t been SPURS basketball. Still, I know they’ve got it in them, and I hope we still get to see it this year.

Yeah, when the hell did this realism vs. hope crap start? And more importantly… I had nothing to do with it, did I? :)

I don’t think so. Everyone’s just mad because we’re losing, but I think we could all find better outlets than arguing over the internet.

Um, I think we are down 3-1 and playing like shit against a team that really isn’t that good.
If, and that’s a big if, we can play well. I think we can still win this series.

Well put. I think we have a great chance to win game 5, and a not so great chance of winning game 6. The total probability of those two happening is probably something like 20% (66% of winning game 5* 33% of winning game 6). If we make it that far, I’d give us a 50-50 shot in a game 7.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Which would make the total probability 10%. Yay.

Ummm, maybe Barbara Mandrell? I know the Sara Evans version is from a BM tribute album.

Ah, you are right. Funny, when I was writing Anne Murray I was going to include that she and her sisters had a variety show. But, in fact, it was the Mandrell sisters who had the show.

The Luther Ingram version? For sure…. I love that line.
There’s this guy that calls WOAI after Spurs games on a regular basis… I think he goes by the name of The Reverend. A couple of years back he was on a tangent one night about the Spurs and his very spirited monologue ended with… “If loving the Spurs is wrong… then I don’t want to be right.”
It was brilliant.

Forget the Alamo, Remember the Spurs
There’s no inherent contradiction in being critical of some of Pop’s moves and FO blunders and still hoping that the Spurs can pull the rabbit out of the hat. I’ll watch every last damn minute, pull for the Spurs til the bitter end, and still put in my two cent’s worth of criticism. Shit, that’s what fan blogs are all about.
Love the optimism, girl! I will be sitting on my couch tomorrow night rooting for the Spurs, win or lose. Sure, I’d like to win, but part of the fun of being a fan is seeing both the sun shine and the rain fall (or snow, if you’re in CO). This is the time to enjoy the Spurs and their beautiful brand of basketball. And I plan on enjoying it, since I unfortunately have missed half of this series’ games.

Sorry about dropping off the face of the earth, but I had family in town all weekend, and barely had time to sleep. Trying to catch up with PtR tonight in preparation for tomorrow’s game. Will be a little late, but I can guarantee I’ll be driving like a banshee to get home tomorrow night in time for the game.

4 wins are needed to claim a series. neither team has 4. so until that happens, its not over.

Thanks for all the kind words, peeps.
I didn’t intend for this to be a referendum on optimism. I’m not dissing anyone for being upset with the FO or the role players. (Lord knows I’ve jawed off to a couple of you away from the blog). We all have ideas on personnel and strategy that can be improved or changed. But those discussions can wait until after the playoffs.
Right here… right now, we gotta dance with the one that brought us. And just for a little while longer, I want to support my team with all of my heart. That’s it.

Yes, it’s known as the comment paradox. You can’t write about your decision to not write a comment without writing a comment about it, which then negates your decision.
