When does our season end?
Things look pretty bleak all across Spurs nation due to the fact that we don't have Manu, Tim's shaky knees, and the rest of our team has gone AWOL. This has left us in a very strange and foreign situation. . . A possible first round bounce with us only winning one game in the playoffs. So what's it gonna be? How will our season end? Do we put up a fight on Tuesday night and send this back to Dallas? Or do we simply concede defeat and turn the lights off at the AT&T center? Does anyone out there feel that we're headed for a game 7, we just simply don't know it yet? And lastly, is there anyone clinging to hope that we are going to pull this series out of the crapper and win in 7?

Call me crazy, I love polls.
I’m actually going to go out on a limb, for kicks and giggles, and just because I can, vote that we actually win the series. I know the chances are about 99% in the Mavs favor, but is it completely far fetched to think the Mavs drop 3 straight? We’ve seen Cubes, Irk, Ericka and Eugene do it before. Teams have come from down 3-1 to win. (2004 Champion Pistons were down 3-1 to Orlando in the first round – thanks T-Mac.// And, were the 95 Rockets down 3-1 to Seattle in the second round? I thought I remember a Mario Elie three from the corner lifting them to victory.// And were we down 3-1 to the Nooch last year, or was that only 2-0?).
I’m going to believe our guys can do it for one final “run” this season. We needed 4 victories against crap teams in the final four games of the regular season in order to wrap up the division, let’s get three more against another crappy team. If it doesn’t happen, greener pastures.

I know that the Spurs have already cemented their place in Worst of the Weekend after their second straight face plant in Dallas, but I would like to nominate them specifically for their end-of-game decision making. Down by 5 with 3:30 left in the game, the Spurs proceeded to go 1-for-8 from the field. I can live with 1-for-8 if they are getting decent shots that just aren’t going in, but included in their 1-for-8 shooting was 1-for-8 from the three-point line. That’s correct. In the last 3:30 of a 5-point game (that remained a 5-point game until the very end), the Spurs took eight three-pointers and zero two-pointers (to go along with zero free throws).
And these were not wide open attempts that the Mavs were giving the Spurs. The Spurs took hand in the face 3’s to the point that on one possession Tim Duncan was wide open under the basket TWICE on one play and Matt Bonner missed him the first time so that Michael Finley could force a contested 25 footer the second time. Tim Duncan even broke out a new version of the Tim Duncan face on the play to express his disgust. To top it all off, coming out of a timeout the Spurs ran a set play for Bonner to shoot a contested 3 from the left corner, which is his worst place outside of the arch according to NBA.com Hot Spots.
I thought 900 games of combined playoff experience was supposed to give the Spurs some kind of mental advantage

If Spurs Win Tues...
I think the key to this series was losing game 1. The Mavs have never felt any pressure in this series. It would be interesting to see if they have to return home for what is a quasi-must win game 6 how would they respond. A Jump shooting team having to play under some duress?
I know it’s a long shot for the Spurs to pull this thing out but if they get this to a game 6 the worm might just start to turn a little bit.

What’s the point? Not gonna win the next series, nothing good is going to happen. I don’t want the FO being complacent and blaming it on Manu, or to think this year was anything less than an unequivocal failure of management, talent development, scouting, and coaching. Frankly, I wish the Mavs would have swept us. I know it’s a rivalry and that makes Spurs fans get their panties in a bunch, but they aren’t going anywhere either. It’s no big deal.
This season was a bust since we decided to give up a #1 pick for KT and pick up his insanely large contract. It was a failure since Pop decided to let Mace play a position where he has no clue what he’s doing, and for Boner to have anything less than a Scalabrine-role. We waste valuable picks on players we’ll never sign, or on players we trade for dirt to a division rival.
The Spurs future is pretty bleak for the next 5-7 years, and who knows what happens when the whole front office/coaching staff depart with Timmy. Time to start letting reality sink in right now, and winning a couple more games, or the series, certainly isn’t helping anything at all. We aren’t a team that’s happy getting to the 2nd round, or even the conference finals, so really, what’s the point? We should all be more interested and the team should be more focused on fixing this incompetent roster they’ve assembled and asinine schemes/strategies. Otherwise, with Portland way under the cap, the rising Thunder with a great new player they’ll probably pick up in the draft, and the Suns getting A’mare back, we’ll be lucky to get the 7th seed next year, might not even make the playoffs.

I can't buy into this "What's the point?" argument.
“YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME” – Herm Edwards
That’s the point. Period.
You certainly don’t see Tim and Tony saying “Well gee golly, we’re not going to be able to beat the Lakers in the WCF with out Manu so what’s the point of even playing? Guess we just better pack it in and lose in the first round.” The reason they don’t say this is because they are competitors, just like Manu.

You can laugh at Herm and his “Hermisms” all you want, but he is completely on point when he says:
“This is what’s great about sports. This is what the greatest thing about sports is. You play to win the game… HELLO!? YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME. You don’t play it to just play it. That’s the great thing about sports—you play to win, and I don’t care if you don’t have any wins. You go play to win. When you start tellin’ me it doesn’t matter, then retire. Get out! ’Cause it matters.”
So this is an appropriate response when you say:
What’s the point? Not gonna win the next series, nothing good is going to happen.

The Spurs might be entering a stretch of time when they simply are not championship contenders. I don’t intend to spend that stretch of time ignoring them or (worse) badmouthing them. I’ll just suffer along and complain a bit here and there when I’m frustrated and cheer when they win. And get my hopes irrationally high at the beginning of each new season. It does matter in this regard: the franchise has made some regrettable decisions based more on the financial than the basketball impact (see: Scola, Luis). If the Spurs make it farther, they play more games at home, thus earning more revenue, and are in a better decision to take on more salary (or not trade away the best player in Europe in order to save a couple mill of Jackie Butler’s contract).

Completely agree with you. Success breed complacency, maybe by getting our asses kicked it will make the people who make decisions think long and hard about where the Spurs are, and where they need to be, and the moves needed to get us there. Maybe they will realize it’s not just having the Big Three and surrounding them with a bunch of shit to win a championship, it takes more than that.
But of course, before I get all the traitor stuff, allow me to post a disclaimer:
Wheeeeeeeeeee! Rainbows! Ponies! We’re gonna win it all! Get ready Lakers because a beat down is coming! The South Shall Rise again! Manu will come back and he will reveal he’s the Son of God! I don’t see any complacency by our FO. I’m restating this but…
If Manu and Ian were healthy and had Splitter decided to come play big boy basketball then we’d be front runners right now. Our front office can’t predict injuries or our draft picks deciding to play else where. If our FO didn’t give a crap about winning then they wouldn’t have gone after the biggest free agent name last summer (Mags) and when they got turned down we landed the next best thing in Roger Mason. Our front office is still unearthing gems with late draft picks. None of us had even heard of George Hill when we drafted him. Our FO tried like hell to rob the Clippers of Camby before the trading deadline this season. When that didn’t work out they went out and got Gooden.
I don’t know what else to expect from our FO. The REALITY of our situation is we have 3 studs who take up a lot of cap room. And of those 3 none of them are over paid so we can’t gripe about not having much cap room. We are a small market team and can’t afford to pay the luxury tax…..or maybe I’m just dreaming this all up.

I think the FO may have had an eye on the post-Duncan era with Splitter. I don’t think they really wanted him to come over for the first couple of years. I could be wrong on that…. but your point still stands – If Manu and Ian had been healthy all year, we definitely aren’t losing in the first round, and that might even give us the depth to go all the way.

I don’t think the reactions you’re describing are directed at people who say “one thing” about the front office — I think those reactions are directed at people who say, essentially, “The front office is cheap and they don’t care about the team’s welfare, Pop is an egotistical asshole who cares more about himself than the team, everything is broken, what a disaster!”
Basically I think there’s overstatement aplenty to be found on either side here. I also think there are a lot of folks who agree with the criticisms but also want the team to win. In any case, I’d hate to see people get into any kind of serious disagreement over the issue, because I think we’re really all on the same side.

I doubt one loss without Manu and a hobbled Tony will lead to the precipitous downfall of the Spurs
Its an isolated case, although one that points out the teams impending weaknesses. We gotta augment Timmy and Manu asap before Parker gets beat up like AI by carrying the load offensively

Not having a first round pick could be a good thing. Could be. Pop doesn’t like playing rookies anyway and rules force you to sign 1st round picks so instead of drafting and paying a guy in the first round who won’t even see playing time hopefully the FO will get a free agent who can contribute.

As unlikely as it is, I chose not in the first round. I totally believe that we have the ability to come back and take this series, and I’m blindly hoping that our role players decide to play a role other than imitating a giant turd.
I have to agree with CMoney’s comments above. I’m going to root for the team to win, and I’m going to hope the FO do something to improve the team. I think we’re all fed up with the FO, but I can’t believe if we get to the 2nd round or even further that they’re naive enough to think there is nothing wrong with the team and we only missed out on winning a championship because Manu was injured. There is a reason that several other franchises are poaching our FO personnel and building their teams based on our model.

We Shouldn't Cry About Draft Pick
What player taken late in the first rd. is going to come in here and make this team a championship team again? No one, the only way the Spurs climb back to the top again is to have a healthy Timmy and Manu hell they shouldn’t suit up until the Rodeo Road Trip. Then we have to get some contribution from previous picks Mahimi, Hairston, Gist and improvement from Hill. And bring back Mensah-Bonsu.

That’s exactly it. I like to think the FO and Pop will learn those lessons without the need for a humbling loss, so the first round exit in my mind doesn’t help the team. With that out of the picture, winning seems like the best option. Winning begets winning and all that.
The “if Manu was healthy” mentality was used last season in the series against the Lakers, and I think most of us agree with it. You can criticize Pop for many reason, but he was never someone to decorate harsh truths. Hell, I don’t think he ever said that after the series against the Lakers.

I wanted NOOCH in the 1st round. Paul is exhausted and they have zero depth or foot speed. We’d have beaten these guys 4-1 or 4-2 at worst… tho without the 58 point thrashing.

I wanted the Mavs. I regret my decision.

This is completely off topic, but this upcoming HBO documentary about the Sichuan earthquake looks astounding.

Damn it. I don’t have HBO, only Showtime. I’m waiting for the 4th season of Dexter.

Speak to me about Dexter. I’ve been thinking of getting into it, and strangely find myself trusting your opinions (on SHOWS, people).
BTW- go download this season (the first) of ‘Eastbound and Down,’ you’ll appreciate it.

It’s based on a book. Dexter is a blood splatter expert of course. The thing is, he’s also a serial killer. As a rule he only kills “bad guys”, meaning other killers which haven’t been caught by the police, or that sort of people. He doesn’t kill them because he’s the serial killer with the heart of gold, he does it because it’s the only way to satisfy his urge and do something good while he’s at it.
His dad was a policeman who discovered Dexter was killing animals and that sort of stuff when he was a kid…And told him that since he couldn’t control his urge, he should use it to only do harm to criminals.
Since it’s from a book, Dexter is a narrator sometimes, so I don’t know if you like that or find it annoying.
What I mostly like about the show, other than the gorgeous cinematography and the dark humor, is that it doesn’t sugarcoat it. He’s not a good guy, he’s a serial killer. He doesn’t kill to do good, he kills because he has to, it’s in him. He has a girlfriend but he doesn’t love her, he can’t love, he’s a psychopath. He stays with her because it makes him feel normal.
In the show sometimes he’ll talk about how people have emotions that he can’t understand, but has to mimic in order to fit in.
His back story is really interesting too, and how later in the show the nets starts to close about him and his crimes.
I think the show has the right mixture of seriousness and humor, plus douchebags getting killed.
And last but not least, the posters they make for each season are always awesome.

Exactly the sale I needed, you spoke to me and I’m even more convinced to get into it. Pretty much everything that Showtime or HBO does I enjoy, so there’s that too. But seriously check out ‘E and D,’ you’ll love the tragic humor and hyperbole.
What’s comical about your reply however, is I for some reason immediately imagined Kobe’s face on those posters, and laughed at how easy it is to see him fitting the same plot description.

I had to keep myself in check from referencing Kobe during the whole explanation.
Isn’t the guy in ’Eastbound and Down" the one who played the explosives expert in Tropic Thunder?

Exactly the same. He kinda just came up out of nowhere really, but he’s perfect in this role. GET ON IT.
Don’t know if this sways you or not, but Will Ferrell and Adam McKay produce it, and Ferrell’s a co-star in the series.

But the last season or so weren’t as good. The serial killer girl he almost fell for was ludicrous.

I love Michael C. Hall. He manages to fly under the radar, but he does excellent work. I still miss Six Feet Under.

He plays the Dexter character excellently, a less actor could’ve had a field day with it, but he keeps it understated. I remember one scene where he gets really angry, and you can see how it isn’t normal anger, but the anger where people flip out and do some harm. It was exactly like you see described when you read about serial killers. That really impressed me.
Plus, yeah, I would do him.

Does Kenny fucking Powers not remind you of what Jay Cutler would be like if you got to know him? I love that show it cracks me up.

That’s great, I hadn’t considered that before but definitely yes. Only Cutler would probably drive some sort of car instead of that redneck Bronco and he’d be more of a whiner.

Yep, it really looks promising.
The guy with the tourette’s is Peter Facinelli… he’s building a nice resume. He was very good in 6 feet under and Damages, but I didn’t really care for him in Twilight.

While traveling recently I stopped at an airport bookstore and the clerk was totally trying to push that on series on me. Umm, no thanks. I’m O.K.

The Jazz had a great comeback in the last few minutes and got within 6, then the refs swallowed their whistles as they got repeatedly hammered on drives to the basket. It was pretty blatant.
