15 wing players I wouldn't mind seeing in a Spurs uniform next season...

Our wings currently consist of Roger Mason Jr, Michael Finley, Ime Udoka, and Bruce Bowen.  Even if Manu did come back healthy next season, it's undeniable that we need a serious upgrade.  I'm not expecting to get a superstar like LeBron or Kobe or Paul Pierce or Caron Butler or such, no franchise cornerstone type players, or rather, untouchables.  I also don't want bloated contracts like Richard Jefferson or Andrei Kirilenko.  This person needs to be someone that can play with the Big 3, and doesn't need the ball.  Plays solid defense.  Also able to hit the 3 fairly consistently, and young(-ish).  At least younger than Finley (36) and Bowen (37), which isn't hard to find, preferably younger than Mason (28), but we can make exceptions.  Also able to create his own shot.  Again, reasonably priced probably nothing significantly greater than an MLE.

Star-divide

In no particular order:

1.) Marvin Williams

2.) Josh Childress

3.) Walter Herrmann

4.) Marquis Daniels

5.) Ron Artest

6.) Kelenna Azubuike

7.) Travis Outlaw

8.) Matt Barnes

9.) Wilson Chandler

10.) Rudy Gay

11.) Damien Wilkins

12.) Jared Dudley

13.) Luc-Richard Mbah-a-Moute

14.) Joe Alexander

15.) Trevor Ariza

Those are my picks (again, in no particular order).  What're yours? (or what do you think?)

I’d like to see Outlaw in a Spurs uniform.

Ariza would be great, he plays tough defense and it’d be nice to steal him from L.A.

i’d love ariza, but i don’t see how he’d want to leave LA when a championship is so close within their reach. I don’t know the Lakers salary, but I just don’t see them letting someone like him going to their Western rival (Spurs)

To nitpick at your list, Rudy Gay is a player that will try to do better than the MLE and Walter Hermann/Marquis Daniels/Matt Barnes are mediocre players that wouldn’t add anything to this team that we couldn’t get from random D-leaguers.

Outlaw, Childress, and Alexander look good to me

no names I’d add to the list. Those need to be the Spurs targets this offseason.

I really have a hard time picturing us landing any of the studs on that list
i think grabbing a guy like alexander would be great

by PacMan210 on Apr 14, 2009 2:18 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I would have thought that the three ball would be a pre requisite

Plus the ability to be a spot up floor spreader.

I dont really see a lot of guys on that list who can do that, defend hard and rebound strong.

I would love to see a guy like azabuike, i think he could do that in the right system.

Artest is a chucker. He kills the flow all the time.

Pretty lame that i am just picking apart instead of really adding anything constructive. Good conversation though i really dig it.

I like Walter Hermann, the Argentine that he is. He’s also got a decent 3-point stroke. Josh Childress would help us defensively, and he’s not too shabby offensively either.

I know this should be the subject of another post, but for the 2009 draft, there are a couple of quality wing guys from North Carolina we can get in Danny Green and Wayne Ellington, both projected by Draft Express to be picked somewhere late 1st round or early 2nd.

Gordon?

I like several of the people on this list. I think you’re missing one that would be a nice pickup. Ben Gordon. I’m not sure if he’d be a great fit, but I really would like his offense off the bench. Him and Hill coming off the bench together would be pretty sweet. Granted he is lacking on the defensive side of the ball, but he would give us a really nice bench scorer and a good clutch guy. Thoughts?

by Big50 on Apr 14, 2009 8:51 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought about Ben Gordon too

But he’d just be like an overpaid Roger Mason.

r21x: Have you seen Marquis Daniels play? Have you seen Walter Herrmann play? There aren’t a whole lot of D-Leaguers that will get you that.

Bushka: A three ball would be nice, but the thing is, Spurs also need creators outside of the Big 3. I think the 3s are the least of our concerns. Additionally, while no one on the list is a lockdown defender (there aren’t that many in the league) they’re all solid man defenders. They cannot possibly be any worse that Roger Mason and Michael Finley.

by Jaceman on Apr 14, 2009 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The big upside with Gordon is that he can handle the ball, create his own shot, and is super clutch. Mason is basically one of those things.

by Big50 on Apr 14, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hate to say I’d take a gamble on Gordon again, after watching him be a liability on defense for so many years. He’s gone from the Bulls after this year. The guy is offense, and we need it.

He wanted 12M a year from the Bulls, and ended up signing for 6.5M this year for one year when neither the Bulls, nor anyone else in the league would pay him that much. I don’t know what our chances are, but, I’d make a call.

Is there anything really special about either one of those guys though? Taking them on won’t give the roster the upgrade it needs.

by r21x on Apr 15, 2009 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They improve the roster and they're reasonably priced...

Do you honestly think you’re going to get Kobe or LeBron caliber talent to play next to the Big 3? Sure, we’d love to start Dwight Howard at center next to Tim Duncan. Sure, I’d love to have a starting backcourt of Tony Parker, Joe Johnson, and Tayshaun Prince with Manu coming off the bench. You can’t sit there and tell me that Marquis Daniels, Marvin Williams, or Josh Childress would not be improvements over Michael Finley and Ime Udoka.

Since Duncan left the spurs money so they can get him help, how about pursuing Odom who I think is unhappy with his new laker role or Marrion who also I think would love to get in the position of winning a championship. Both play defense and doesn’t need set plays to score and would greatly complement Duncan in the low post because both played with great low post players..Either one of these guys with a healthy big 3 I think would propel another championship.

by 21td on Apr 14, 2009 1:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Either of those guys would be nice, but I don’t see Odom coming over and Marion is getting pretty old

Good point…

by Big50 on Apr 14, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Duncan definitely did not leave them enough money for that...

You have about 80% of the cap tied up in Manu, Duncan, and Parker. Everything else is eaten up by Bowen, Oberto, Mason. So the question ends up being, are these players willing to play for an MLE or less? I don’t think either Odom or Marion would, and their roles on the Spurs wouldn’t be significantly better. I think a lot of teams will be flirting with Odom as he’s a dynamic 4 that can slash and create, but his shooting is suspect. Marion, through a season at Miami has shown he can’t function in a half-court setting, and is more of an undersized power forward that can defend wing positions than a true SF. I don’t think the Spurs can afford either one, and I don’t see either one as a good fit on the Spurs. Remember, Marion had problems playing behind Nash and Amar’e, why wouldn’t he have problems playing behind Duncan, Parker, and Manu?

In all honest i cannot see a team giving marion especially

anything other than mid level money.

He cannot create his own shot, he is an aging player who has lived on quickness and athleticism..

If he is looking for that big payday that phoenix wasn’t willing to give him he is woefully horrifically ill informed.

He was auditioning in Miami & then toronto, he could not create with ball in hand in either place, and he excelled on D. What teams going to pay for that kind of a player?

He only works as a complementary player. Would be perfect in Silver & Black but is going to be severely discontented if he lands here because of the kind of money he will have to take. We all know what kind of a cancer he is in a locker room when he believes he is paid below market value.

Can’t believe the idiot thought he was worth a max near max contract.

It makes me chuckle when I hear that Marion has dropped off offensively after leaving the Suns. (I must have missed him giving Nash a bunch of credit for continuously delivering the ball to him at the perfect time & place.) Perhaps TP can solve his offensive drop-off. But the money, age & attitude will still be issues.

PS. I expect Amare S might might not score as easily once Nash leaves / retires.

You guys don’t want any of those stinky Laker players. In fact keep your hands off ’em. (I saw someone else suggesting Trevor Ariza might fit well on the Spurs.)

It was bad enough seeing Robert Horry defect.

Now please put down the oar.

I’ve never been on here trashing the Spurs or their players or fans. And I wouldn’t especially given the kind of season y’all have had. Now trashing the Suns – hell yes – there’s always room for that.

Besides, I’ve been to IUPUI a bunch of times back when I used to travel to Indy on business. So I’m practically related.

Now keep your paws off Ariza & Odom. And don’t hate me because my team is kicking ass this year. Plus there’s a Laker blog on SBNation now soooo. . . .

"This person needs to be someone that can play with the Big 3, and doesn't need the ball. Plays solid defense."

Travis Outlaw adds nothing to a team playing without the ball and is a horrible defender. He can’t rebound and can’t pass. His most effective position is PF where he has a mismatch with his slower/taller defender. He is just a good scorer off the bench who can get his shot (always a fade away jumper) off against anybody. He is not a free agent.

But the OP was looking for a player who doesn’t need the ball and plays solid defense, those are Trout’s worst qualities.

I agree, Travis Outlaw may have the tools (long and athletic, and can shoot it) but he’s not quite what the Spurs need. Outlaw’s more of a guy who needs to get his shots to get in the flow of the game.
