I just banned ESPN from my computer
Yeah we all know that espn writers are a super bag of douchebags. Still, I went there to read the ocasional article. Not anymore.
Look at defensive player of the year...... Howard, Wade, Lebron, Kobe and Paul?!??! Those guys probably arent even the best defensive players on their teams.JORDAN IS GONE, STOP TRYING TO SELL THE LEAGUE WITH STARS.
Seriously??!?! No artest? No Batter? No duncan? heck... no Mbah la mouthe?
And the arguments to put those players in the top 5? "he had X rebounds, X steals, X blocks the past week".
FUCK ESPN, i've seen the light (well I already saw it long time ago, but still the masochist in me went regularly to that Lebron/kobe ballsucking fest)
(oh and somehow Spolestra is 3rd for coach of the year while the coach of a 40-19 team doesnt get a mention)

Yeah I don’t like it either. I liked how Camby got DPOY a few years ago because he averaged 4 blocks a game or something. I think the last DPOY i agreed with was Ben Wallace (who is alot like Bowen in terms of statistical prowess).

Bens numbers were stellar in comparison to bruces ( though i always thought bruce was a better defender, and bruce was robbed in at least one of the times they gave the award to ben wallace….)

Duncan should have won the DPOY in 2007 as he had the highest defensive rating/100 possessions in the league at 94. He also had some solid stats that season(2.4 blocks; 7.9 defensive rebs per game). Real hoopheads know what’s up.

This isn't surprising
Here’s the deal, we all know that ESPN is all about kissing arse (some Scottish lingo). They want the stars to like them and let them get interviews so of course they’re going to put that guys who are popular should get all the hardware. I say let them have all of it….except the piece that matters. I love to hear all these same chumps HAVE to talk about the Spurs during the late spring and early summer.

DRtg is a flawed statistic that's way too heavily team-based.
I’d caution using that stat by itself. Always better to use supporting data to back up a certain claim.

Yeah, I saw this. Another reason to get the fanposts section going so that we don’t have to wander into ESPN any more. :)

I debated with myself whether to add it… I do think it’s a bit tacky. But since it’s the only link to my lil’ blog in the World Wide Web, I’ll stick with it for a while.

You definitely haven’t been around much lately. There’s a difference in “promoting” and “constantly pimping out.” It’s becoming sad, and we’re actually kinda getting worried about him.

No one seems to care about Defensive player of the year anymore. i mean Ben Wallace, who already won multiple DPOY awards, joins the Cavs. Then the Cavs become an actual good defensive squad but the credit goes to LeBron James?? I’m not following that.
Bruce will forever be shafted of his DPOY. Timmy still has a shot.

Dwight Howard is a legitmate DPOY candidate (league leader in Defensive rating per/100 poss., league leader in blocks, 3rd in defensive rebounding pct.), but the other guys are not. Lebron has become a better defender, but by no means is he a consistent lock-down guy. Kobe is an overrated defender and Wade has some impressive stats, but his on the ball defense is spotty. But as r21x said, this award has lost some significance.

Ben wallace is the most overated defender ive ever seen……..In his last season with the pistons, they lost in the conference finals in six games………The next season (After he had jumped ship because they didnt offer him a contract he thought was big enough) the pistons made it all the way to the conference finals once again and lost in six games, again. The season after that, they made it to the conference finals yet again , and lost in six games , yet again……( that was strangely redundant, yet true)
All the while the pistons maintained a good defense ( except for this season)

I have to disagree. When Ben was there, the pistons were a defensive juggernaut. They were an ostanding* team at limiting every option the other team had. When he left, their defense remained very good but not great. They reached the conference finals two more times because of their improved offense. So you can say all that you want about Ben lack of offesne, but defensively he was a game changer (he still is solid, but his best years are behind)

great points. Ben is definately not what he once was, but the man knows how to play defense, even when he is undersized when he doesn’t have his 4 inch afro out. I got nothing wrong with him lacking offense (though he can clean up the trash like mr. oberto) if he makes up for it on the other side of the court, which i think he does/did well.

i agree. duncan and bowen are constantly shafted for this. even last year, when garnett won, i still thought it rightfully belonged to duncan as an individual award. that said, i thought it was cool that the voters decided to recognize leadership as an award criteria. it’s too bad they never took that approach with anyone from los spurs.
but, ya’ll’s wrong about kobe. he’s an absolute lock-down defender, which is why i tend to say he’s still better than lebron, but just by a smidge. lebron is learning, and he’s bigger and stronger. someday, he could be that much better.
wade i just don’t get. i can see the rationale for paul, but i just disagree.
you ain't a beauty but hey you're all right.
by kalone on Mar 5, 2009 11:40 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
good points kalone. I agree kobe is a great defender, but i really don’t consider him somebody that would contend for a DPOY. Lebron is solid just like Kobe, but his abilities i think are a bit overstated at this present time. yeah lebron is good on weak side blocking and all that, but when you hit the shit out of the ball into the stands, the opposing teams still gets the ball back, so it’s just highlight material for BSPN. If he could block and keep possession of it, i’d admire that.
Cp3 just steals the ball but he usually isn’t gambling on intercepting a pass, he has quick hands and thats nice, but i’m not impressed because regardless of his steals, I have never seen him shut down another point guard. Wade i haven’t really watched, but from what i saw in the Olympics, he is kind of like Chris paul, but worse. His steals come from gambling, and if he doesn’t get it, the player he should be guarding usually makes him pay by knocking down a shot.
Yeah Duncan and Bowen get shafted kind of, but they have been on the All Defensive Team plenty of times, and that says something

There’s a big reason Kobe Bryant doesnt deserve DPOY consideration or even those All Defense team he has won. The guy mails it in for 3 and a half quarters. For like 40 minutes he is just an average defender and he doesnt put much effort. Those final 6-10 minutes of great defense are not enough to make a great defensive player.

The only two times i ever had a serious problem with the DPOY outcome was one of the times that Ben Wallace got ( forgot which of the four times it was, but Bruce Bowen should have got it), and the time Ron Artest got it ( Bruce should have got it that season as well )
Who cares anyway, its an award that the media and sportswriters decide, and thats all i needed to know …..
And the fact that tim duncan hasnt gotten just reiterates the phoniness of the voting format
