No Tony, No Points
Spurs scoring rate, past three games.
Hawks: Tony in game - 112 ppg/Tony on bench - 65 ppg
Clippers: Tony in game - 158 ppg/Tony on bench - 85 ppg
Hornets: Tony in game - 98 ppg/Tony on bench - 36 ppg
While remarkable, these numbers fail to express the true horror. When Tony took end-of-Q3 breathers against the Hornets and Hawks the Spurs failed to make a single basket. That's 6:34 of game-in-the-balance futility. Against the defenseless Clippers the Spurs scored more in the 17 minutes Tony played than in the 31 he sat.
Come playoff time he may be logging a lot of 45 minute games.

Great post. Even though a lot of us don’t believe in stats around here, those numbers are very compelling, and I’m going to twist them to suit my point.
The thing about this is, those numbers also coincided with Mason running the point. Mason is not a good distributor, is not good off the dribble, and generally isn’t the best decision maker. If George or Manu were running the point behind Tony, there wouldn’t such a wide disparity. Why Pop continues to put him in charge when Tony is sitting, I don’t know.
And yes, everyone – I’m going to continue ranting about this until Pop gets a clue.
And Pop said "Let there be Mace"; and there was Mace. And Pop saw what he had done, that it was good. But it was not a point guard, and Pop was blind to this.
Save yourself the time
Pop said in an interview that he’s sticking with Mace at PG through out the playoffs. Awesome, I know.
Superman wears Manu Ginobili pajamas to bed.
Thx for the welcome
Love the site but I mostly lurk. I have to turn on all kinds of cookie stuff in my browser to post.
Pop’s giving Mace 20 games to try and figure it out. I mean, why not? He gave George 60. He probably figures if neither backup can run the offense then go with the one who can dribble past a pick and jack a three. It at least offers a theoretical possibility of scoring. Come playoffs all this experimenting will end and Pop will choose between:
1. “Now substituting for Tony Parker is #9, Tonee Pahkur”
2. Manu
3. JV
The offense flows when JV runs it, but shooting and defending from his wheelchair are problematic. Manu is able (of course!!!) but you really want a 2 guarding him. Won’t happen if he brings it down every time, and the old “dribble to halfcourt and hand it to Manu” trick only works if the aforementioned dribbler/hand-offer can shoot. Which brings us back to Mace.
Perhaps these 20 games are designed to show opposing coaches a weakness, so they’ll sic their backup point on Mace and ignore Manu. Hah.

Aww. So mean!
Hence funny.
I’m open to suggestions, I guess! Give JV a shot, the opponents certainly won’t see it coming if they’ve ever looked at one of our box score. :-D “Who’s this new guy…they call him the JV?”

No one in ptr history has ever written the words “the offense flows when the JV runs it” before. At least, not in succession.

Wow, these stats are very compelling. Rec’ed to a good place to go when you die. It would surprise me if Pop were not aware of this, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see TP for 40+ mins/game in the playoffs.
I’d be curious what these numbers looked like earlier in the season when GHill was the primary backup point guard. I’m also puzzled by the Roger Mason Jr. at backup point guard experiment—what has Hill done to fall out of favor?
I'm gonna guess not hit game winning 3s.
I don’t think it’s a knock against Hill more than a kudos to Mason since they have to make room for Manu on the bench.

Agreed, he’s a great shooter and should be in the game for his game winning tendancies.
Make sure he’s in at the end of games then, not as a full time back up PG.
Although Hill has alot of potential (I really dig his defensive ability and calm demeanor)
Like DDW said, come playoff time,Tony will probably log alot of 45 minute games with Manu
spelling him depending on the match ups
