So This is Just Weird
Matthew Powell....
Finished......
I'm not quite sure what to make of it. It's not like I ever had a beer with or even met the guy. It's not about that actually (I think to myself as I type this). It's more the fact that PTR is HIS baby. He's why it and we are all here, together as Spurs fans. Celebrating their victories, mourning their losses. We all have our non-cyber friends, spouses, co-workers or acquaintances who we can catch the game with (which I usually do actually), but when here on PTR, it's different. It's almost like a club or team (yeah team is more like it). Just like in Latin D's game thread preview before the Celtics shame game, we all seem to have a position. From the best ever PF to the young and or role players on the bench, big or small we each try to contribute something. Be it a mere morsel or a five course meal of insight or breaking news. We're ahead of the game, knowledge wise compared to regular (non-PTR) fans because of it.
Anyway, it just seems kind of weird. The man that made this will no longer be a part of it. It would be like Ronald leaving McDonald's or Captain Morgan jumping off of the bottle. I'd still down a quarter pounder with cheese and consume a few rum and Cokes now and then, it just wouldn't be the same. Nothing against ATS, I'm SURE he'll do an awesome job, it's just weird.
All that being said, I hope for PTR to live long and prosper (not really a big Star Trek fan, I've just always dug that line) and hope to continue to be a contributing part off the bench. I'm only in my second year, so who knows, maybe I can pry away a starting spot with some smart unselfish play and consistent three's.
Thanks again Matthew and
I STILL LOVES ME SOME FINDOG!!!
Your thoughts everyone???

I feel exactly how I did when I saw Tim Duncan twist his knee last year and hit the hardwood clutching his knee…

Nice post, raynor. It feels weird to see him go, but he says it’s the best for him.
There are other Internet forums for NBA fans, or even for Spurs fans. Case in point, there’s SpursTalk, which is much more active, has plenty of regulars and is full of interesting stuff. But it simply is not the same for me – here the posters are generally kind, thoughtful, and downright friendly. It’s a pleasure for me to join in and discuss stuff with you.
Matthew created a great place here. I plan to stick around.

It’s definitely gonna take some getting used to, but like I said in the other thread, the site is in good hands.

I'm bummed....
Raynor, you hit the nail on the head.
For me this feels like an Irish wake, we just need to start drinking heavily. Oh wait, we already do that.
It’s not like he’s passed away, but it’s kinda exactly like that. When will we hear his unique voice again? Will there be random Elvis sightings on other blogs? Will ATS & Stampler give us regular updates on Matthew correspondence?
This is indeed a weird feeling.

doubtful. I don’t think he gave a crap, nor should he have given said crap, when people complained about the rules.

Good
That’s what I hoped.
I don’t mean that people shouldn’t have complained (‘cause this is an opinion website), I mean I hope he didn’t care.

+1 that my man
hell I broke the rules a lot but I never complained about them. They were just a little vague.

well Rayne, the truth of the matter is that even if you lived right next door to Matthew, you never would’ve had a beer with him because he doesn’t drink. Secondly, while I’m sad that he’s left, I think I understand his reasons for doing so, and I would encourage everyone at PtR to look forward, not back, because that’s what he’s doing.
Matthew is a very, very complicated person, and often quite sad and I don’t think he’s been okay for four years now and running. You can feel sad and mourn him if you like, but just understand that he won’t care, he won’t appreciate the gesture, he won’t even read it. He’s done.

by Aaronstampler on Mar 22, 2009 1:33 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That’s cool, and just so you know, I didn’t mean it as gesture or thought that he might read it. I was just venting the weird feeling that it gave me and was curious to see how and what the others felt. I thought for a second, will ptr be same? Is it going to be bedlam? Are trolls going to run rampant? Are Stampler, LatinD, ATS, ect. next? It was kind of a calm, panicky, sudden re-evalutation of this blog which then prompted me spill it out into a post.
More for myself than for Powell.
Now that I think of it, how are you?
Are YOU feeling ok?

Okay, it might be the Spurs losing stupid games, or general bad mood, but longass sigs annoy me so much… I’m not trying to be an ass, but I can’t even read threads of comments dominated by 100-words sigs.
We all might feel strongly about our sigs. I personally use it as the only link to my blog in the whole world wide web. But if people started massively complaining about how my sig makes my comments unreadable, and simply ruins the flow of the thread, I’d drop it in a second. Is it too much to ask for people to choose a single quote they like, instead of 10? Or something that’s not 10 times longer that their average comment?
Sigh. Maybe it’s just me.

my poor compadre seems to be on the down side esta noche. if it makes you feel any better I don’t even have a sig and so perhaps KA1Z3R and myself ballance things out for you. Once Manu gets back even a 700 word sig won’t be enough to make you angry.
by speedostuffer on Mar 22, 2009 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
its not just you. and its not cos of the spurs losing stupid games. they annoy the shit out of me too. they ruin the flow of threads and make reading the site at best annoying, and at worst a chore.
i was sort of hoping that the offending parties would get the hint that it was annoying a lot of us, but obviously not. so to anyone who’s sig is longer than 3 or 4 lines:
GET RID OF IT
please. a little common courtesy and netiquette wouldn’t go astray. as stated in RFC 1855:
If you include a signature keep it short. Rule of thumb is no longer than 4 lines.

I should be the last person writing about this, god knows I’ve crossed the line and probably offended people more than once. But it’s courtesy man, PTR is a fucking brotherhood. We all get along, we all joke about each other, we all tear down Parker mercilessly for every mistake he makes. I think it’s pretty clear by now that long signatures are annoying and bog down the threads. If your PTR buddies are hinting that maybe you can shorten your sig, why not do it? No one is forcing anyone to not have signatures, just to have one of reasonable length.
The best part about PTR is that it feels like a small family, like we all know each other. And yeah families have arguments all the time, but if you don’t do it for yourself do it for the other PTR-ers, who make this the great blog that it is.

Exactly
Instead of being considerate of others reading the blog, they’d rather make this blog about them. In my opinion, people with long sigs are screaming for attention. It really is sad.
FACT: A long sig will not compensate for your other “shortcomings” you may have.

I think KAZR will change it. Just that line from the movie is a personal fav of mine and I am not sure why it hit deep. Maybe it did for him as well and as all things, it will wear off. I agree it is troublesome.

Can we stop the sig discussion already? Raynorschiene put up a good post to reflect on Powell’s departure and we’re ruining it. Just put up a different thread/fanpost to discuss that issue.

But he locked his own departure thread. He feels very memorialized. And this thread is no less about missing Matthew for veering off into the weeds.
There’s no ruining of anything. There’s no fighting of any system. People can say whatever they please.

Heh. I seriously think the last string of losses and then Matthew’s departure have us fans a bit on the edge. I think we all need to take a deep breath and relax – myself included. :)
But please, guys, let’s try to get along. At least let us discuss the issues and not resort to mocking, Sabre… My post wasn’t a personal attack on you or Kai. If you guys didn’t post regularly or were a part of this blog, I wouldn’t mind if your sig were 10 pages long. But you are, and I hope you’ll continue to post often, so my complains are directed to a obtain a proper balance between customization and practicality.
It’s just difficult to read. You don’t agree? Is it that big a compromise? If you want, I’ll drop my sig to in trade, or whatever.
