Quality Bigs available all of a sudden!!!
This sunday was the deadline for players to be playoff eligible if they signed with a new team. For that reason, Joe Smith and Drew Gooden were waived by their teams.
There are rumors that Joe Smith will sign with the Cavaleirs while Gooden is more likely to end up with the Spurs or Mavs. We dont have a lot of money to throw to one of these guys, but the fact that the Spurs seem to be serious contenders this year could make for a ring chasing contract. The Cavs are probably in better shape, but they wont sign both Smith and Gooden. So that leaves the Spurs and the Mavs fighitng for the remaining guy. We are second in the west, the mavs are fighting with the suns to just be in the playoffs.
What do you say PTR? Shall we get Joe Smith or Drew Gooden? Are Kurt Thomas and Oberto playing good enough lately? I think we should go at it. To me it seems like a very low risk-high reward possibilty. Lets face it, we are one piece away from the 'ship, but not a big piece.

Apparently the Cavs can give Smith a lot more dough.

Don’t like him either, but if signed on the cheap, a good insurance policy none the less

I've never been a fan of Gooden...
…and didn’t much care for him when he was with Chicago, but I agree with the above…if he’s cheap, grab him. He can help out underneath.

I'd rather...
play Pops more. I don’t see Gooden being an upgrade over Pops. They are similar players as far as being hustle guys. If we can’t have Pops and we can get Gooden for cheap then fine, but I’d like to see more Pops rather than Gooden.

When would we move on this, if we do?

I say sign him
I don’t think it would hurt getting him. He’s batshit crazy, but he definitely could help crash the boards. Against the likes of Utah, Houston & the LA Lakers that’s going to be key.

We’ll also inherit Gooden’s crazy fugly beard (what the hell is that thing?) so that makes us the most bearded team in the league.

The team’s playoff beards could collectively become epic. The stuff legends are made of.

I know. Imagine, just a Fab-Gooden frontcourt off the bench. Enough to drive the entire league crazy! David Stern might issue a new rule next season on growing beards.

They would put hockey players’ playoff beards to shame! And anything that annoys Stern is OK in my book.

Pops was not with the Spurs at tonight’s game against the Clippers. Not in suit or uniform. So the Spurs might actually go through with this. I can’t see why they wouldn’t one up Pops for another 10 day contract unless they had another plan.

I'd lean towards Gooden.
