Playoff Match-ups
So I was looking at the current Western Conference Playoff Matchups and it looks like the Spurs are lined up to play the best teams all the way through. The Lakers appear to have very favorable matchups for at least the first 2 rounds. Here's what we're looking at:
| Western Conference | ||||||||||
| Western | W | L | PCT | GB | CONF | DIV | HOME | ROAD | L 10 | STREAK |
| L.A. Lakers1p | 53 | 14 | 0.791 | 0.0 | 36-7 | 11-2 | 30-5 | 23-9 | 6-4 | L 1 |
| San Antonio2 | 45 | 22 | 0.672 | 8.0 | 29-12 | 9-4 | 24-9 | 21-13 | 6-4 | W 1 |
| Houston3 | 44 | 25 | 0.638 | 10.0 | 28-13 | 7-6 | 27-8 | 17-17 | 7-3 | W 1 |
| Denver4 | 43 | 25 | 0.632 | 10.5 | 26-14 | 9-3 | 26-8 | 17-17 | 5-5 | W 3 |
| Portland5 | 42 | 25 | 0.627 | 11.0 | 22-19 | 7-5 | 28-6 | 14-19 | 7-3 | W 1 |
| New Orleans6 | 41 | 25 | 0.621 | 11.5 | 23-15 | 6-4 | 23-10 | 18-15 | 7-3 | L 2 |
| Utah7 | 42 | 26 | 0.618 | 11.5 | 28-11 | 9-3 | 29-6 | 13-20 | 7-3 | W 1 |
| Dallas8 | 41 | 27 | 0.603 | 12.5 | 22-20 | 5-7 | 25-8 | 16-19 | 6-4 | W 1 |
So my question is are you happy with these match-ups? I am not, I'd like to see Dallas get to 7 and Utah fall to 8. I'd like to see Denver move up to 3 and Houston fall to 4. I think I'd like that.
At this point the Spurs are looking at Utah in the first rounds. Houston/NOOCH in the 2nd round. I would argue that, with the possible exception of Portland, those are the toughest match-ups for us in the first 2 rounds.
From my perspective I'd like to see somebody that's going to give the Lakers at least a little bit of trouble before the WCF. Portland could be that team, but how much better would it be if Utah played LA in the first round? Awesome, I would say.

Utah / Lakers 1st Round
Ideal Situation: If Dallas can do better than Utah for the next 16 games …
Lakers (1) v. Utah (8)
Denver (4) v. Portland (5)
Spurs (2) v. Dallas (7)
Houston (3) v. NOOCH (6)
Lakers play Portland and Utah here, while we face Houston or the NOOCH (does it matter?) in the second round.
I know some people on this board are still scarred of the NOOCH, but injuries + bad chemistry + failed tyson chandler trade have really reduced that team. If anything they have less composure than they did when we faced them last time.

I’d rather play Dallas in the first round. I’d rather Utah play the Lakers, they seem to give them some trouble. Iknow there’s a million to one chance of this ever happening, but wouldn’t it be funny if Dallas knocked the Lakers out in the first round? (They’d say they were due for an upset in their favor this time.)

I’d be overjoyed. If that EVER happened, the Spurs just won the West right there.

my prefered scenarios
I would be happy with any of the following two scenarios. Couple of things before I list them. I would prefer Lakers playing Utah in 2nd round as opposed to the 1st round so that they are all banged up before a possible matchup with the Spurs, Also, I like the odds of Spurs playing and comfortably winning against Houston rather than playing New Orleans, as Parker, our only 100% fit star, could dominate the PG matchup. I would rather not see CP3 in the playoffs. Portland would be a tough 1st round matchup, but we should be able to win that series in 5-6 games. I am hoping for an easy semifinals so that Timmy and Manu can save their energy to destroy the Fakers in the finals.
With that said, here is my list:
Senario 1
1 – lakers
2 – spurs
3 – nuggets
4 – rockets
5 – hornets
6 – trailblazers
7 – mavs (i would prefer them not making the playoffs – I hate them. PS: I live in Dallas)
8 – Jazz
Scenario 2
1 – lakers
2 – spurs
3 – rockets
4 – Jazz
5 – hornets
6 – nuggets
7 – trailblazers
8 – mavs
My ideal scenario is very close to NamSpur’s #2 above. Only difference is i would switch out denver with portland. so it would be…
1-lakers
2-spurs
3-rockets
4-utah
5-hornets
6-blazers
7-nuggets
8-mavs
right now, i think any team 2-8 could wind up anywhere, so this is all blind speculation at this point. but i do think it’s possible that the nuggs could slip to 7.
i like this scenario because we get denver in the first round, a team that we have destroyed in years past in the playoffs, and i don’t believe that chauncey has made that big of a difference. we get to watch the mavs crushed in round one, and we get to see the jazz and the hornets play in round 1, pitting CP3 vs. Deron Williams. while i believe that CP3 is the better player, for whatever reason, Deron owns him, and i think the jazz would prevail in this series. the other matchup—houston vs. portland—would be tough for me, because i’d prefer to play houston in the second round, but, living in portland, would be pulling hard for my other team, the blazers.
in the second round, that would put the lakers against either the jazz or the hornets, both tough and/or physical match-ups for them that could stretch them a few games longer than they would like, possibly even 7 games. also, that gives us either houston or portland in the second round. both fine teams, but both teams that would at that point be playing over their head. houston would be so happy to have that first round monkey off their backs, and probably wouldn’t expect to go much further. portland would be playing in their first playoffs as a young team and would also probably be very happy just to get out of the first round.
then it’s spurs-lakers, the western conference finals that we all want and deserve. (of course, i’d be happy to see somebody besides the lakers, but i don’t see that happening short of kobe’s leg falling off).
does anybody else find it annoying that people think the jazz are the only legitimate threat to the lakers when they can’t even win a game on the road? according to somebody (probably hollinnger), they haven’t beaten a team that was more than 2 games over .500 on the road all year. um, that’s bad. you have to win on the road in the playoffs. unless you’re the 2007-08 boston celtics.
Guess I’m okay with facing Utah because of the simple truth that they have difficulty winning road games.

I really, honestly think that Portland is a legit threat to the Lakers. And to us. If they can get motivated enough to win just ONE road game, that’s enough for them. They have completely destroyed us and the Lakers at home, on multiple occasions. Not a team I want to face at full strength. That said, there is one other team that gives the Blazers nightmares, and that’s Utah. so…..here we go.
1. Lakers
2. Spurs
3. Moonmen
4. Jazz
5. NOOCH
6. Rockets
7. Mavs
8. Blazers
Here’s the way this works: Portland gives LA hell in the first round. Maybe they actually pull off the upset, probably not, but either way they make the Lakers work harder than anyone else, because of the youth/energy factor. Then in the second round, Utah shows up(as previously mentioned, DWill owns CP3), beating LA/Portland senseless. If LA makes it through that gauntlet, and we’re healthy, this gives us the best chance of beating them, after a relatively harmless path through the Mavs and Moonmen/Rockets.
The Spurs: Destroying other franchises since 1999.
Honestly guys, I dont buy that the spurs can be knocked out of the playoffs by anyone in the west except for the Lakers……
Too many games left to speculate here….
plus it’s fun to speculate wildly about things that we have no control over yet consume our lives so.

Speaking of the playoffs, there’s a nice article on www.nba.com discussing the Spurs and Pop, mentioning a higher seed. Here it is.
