Game Thread #48: @ Nuggets

Pile-of-shit-sand-castle_medium
He's trying to spell out "Spurs"

We were shit last night. Smelly, yellowish, pudding-soft dinosaur shit. Considering I stayed till 4:30 AM to watch the game, I consider it my godgiven right to be completely pissed off at any Spur not called Tim, Manu or Kurt.

I want to blame Tony for his stupid TOs (but I have to admit he had some timely assists in OT), or Mason for his incredibly bad shots, but the real culprit is Pop. We started the game on fire, with Timmy making everything he shot, and then he decided that Nellie Ball was the answer and then... then a shitfest ensued.

And yes, we won. But it shouldn't count as a full win. Maybe half a win, or 3/4 at most.

It wouldn't be the Cameleon Spurs we love if we didn't play down to our opponent's level, I guess. I expect them to make tonight's a close game, and I believe we have a chance. Let's pray for a shitfree evening.

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - Three-time All Star. Huh. I guess we can't say he's underrated any more, and as I said elsewhere, this catapults Manu firmly back into the underrated category. And I really hate the fact that I seem to be bashing Tony once more to make Manu look good, because that's not my intention. I'm happy for Frenchie. Regarding Billups, can we please stop calling him Mr. Big Shot and switch to Mr. Ocassionally-Makes-A-Big-Shot-And-Is-An-Improvement-Over-AI?
  • Off Guard - That's the Manu I know and onanise over. IF ONLY THEY DIDN'T SNUB HIM LIKE THE DO ALL OTHER ARGENTINE PLAYERS OH MY GOD I'M SO FUCKING MAD I HATE MY LIFE AAHH ALL CAPS RULE AAAH. Ahem. I don't have much to say about Dahntay, other than I like saying his name. Dahntay. Dahntay. DahntayDahntayDahntay. (BTW, Joe Gilmartin from Blogs.Suns.Com called Manu here "sort of a loose canon that shoots straight". I liked that one.)
  • Center - I don't think Nene can even stop the guy who hands Timmy his Gatorade. Then again, I didn't think Turiaf could, either, and we all know what happened. (Bavetta happened.)
  • Power Forward - I was tempted to pick Bonner here, but then I remember he was our specialist three point shooter who isn't shooting any more. What's Bonner's role now? Looking awfully red?
  • Small Forward - 'Melo is not an All Star, it seems. He and Bowen can now go the Cracker Barrel and share a... steak? What the hell do they serve there, anyway?
  • Bench - I like JR Smith, and Carter and Klieza are okay, but if you think I'm going to pick against Hill, you have another IUPUI coming.
  • Coach - Pop tried hard to lose last night, and failed miserably. But at least he's not bald and bitter. Okay, he's not bald.
  • Intangibles - Our guys are probably pretty tired after last night's near debacle. The Nuggets are rested, and at home.
  • Mojo - True story: I was trying to catch the video recap at Sports Center after the game against Phoenix last week, and I stumbled upon a romantic comedy I like and have watched a few times: Forget Paris. I know that some people hate Cristal, but hey, he has his moments. It was just starting, and I always miss the beginning, so I decided to watch a few minutes. Billy is about to be introduced, and he's an NBA referee, as you probably remember - it's the playoffs, and to my utter surprise, Barkley's Suns are playing at home versus the Admiral's Spurs. Robinson has fouled out with 40+ points and 20ish rebounds, the Suns are down 1 with 20 seconds left, and Barkley takes the shot... It's in! But suddenly a whistle is blown - It's Cristal, claiming it was late! Shock! Mayhem ensues! The Suns lose, and they now have to go to SA for a game 7. I knew right then and there that we had won. (Watch the clip in this trailer.)
  • Winners - Us. Not Them. The guys aren't going to ruin my 10-0 prediction for this stretch, are they?

Keys To The Game

  • Suckitude - The Warriors are the best team we can beat at last night's suckitude level. This is the Rodeo Trip, and since so much of our identity is based on its results, I hope Pop and the scrubs start taking it more seriously.
  • Defense - This game is so much easier when we defend. And I think grabbing rebounds also helps. Kurt Thomas is playing at a high level, thankfully, and is playing like we always wanted him to. A couple of years late, but welcome nonetheless.
  • Hill - Why don't you let him free a bit more, Pop, old buddy? His leash is shorter every game, and I don't like it.

Some other reading

Being a Nuggets fan, priceless:

Pickaxe and Roll (An SB Nation blog. Not nearly as active as PTR, either, and the main contributor seems to hate the Spurs. Now that's original.)
Denver Stiffs (Now that's a name for a blog.)
The Nugg Doctor (Guess what: this guy also hates the Spurs. Yay.)
Roundball Mining Company (If you have to pick one, go here.)

Other things of possible interest

  • 48 Reasons to Blog - Many things happened in the two weeks I was gone. I don't know whether Internet simply evolves that fast all the time, and I don't notice because I'm connected 24/7, or if it was a particularly active fortnight. Regardless, I'll be sharing a few good links in other previews, but I have to start with the great Spurs blog that recently moved to a new location, 48 Minutes of Hell. Graydon Gordian and Tim Varner are simply knocking it out of the park (uh... should I use a basketball metaphor instead?) day in and day out. If you're a Spurs fan, not reading this blog is doing yourself a major disservice.
  • Bulls by Bawful - Okay, just another one. Bawful from Basketbawful, one of the best blogs out there, period, has started a blog focusing solely on the Bulls and their many woes. It's called "By the Horns", and highly recommended. Don't miss the Dull-Negrometer. (Del Negro, the anti-Pop?)
  • ESPN? Really? - From time to time ESPN analysts produce something worth reading. Chris Sheridan expounds on the top 12 trade assests in the league at this point, and Chad Ford makes a list of the top big men on the trading block. I had fun with them.
  • Duke - I really don't get why people hate Duke, but hey, who am I to judge them? If you are anti-Duke, click here.
  • Jammin' - This is the kind of stuff I'd like to link to if I actually had a blog about dunks. College game, yes, but daaaamn this is neat.
  • Make it double - Poor generic white jersey players.
  • Water Jet Pack - Oh? Completely not related to basketball or the NBA? Granted, but still, too cool not to share.
  • We love this game, REALLY - Where Getting Old Happens can't match the good ol' I Love This Game. But there're exceptions.
  • Yawn - Ian "Wet Dorito" Mahinmi sounds good, ATS.
  • Facwnd - And then Matthew says mojo isn't a true force of nature. Check out what happens when an ahole steps on an Arizona player's face while he was lying down. Karma's a female dog.
  • Put you in the ground - Via Hipuks, Bale gets angry.
  • Broken Ankles - I linked to the video in my last preview, I believe. Well, whatever you feel about Kobe, you have to admit this is kind of amusing.
  • Grow - Okay, final non-basketball related link, I promise. These flash games are all part of the Grow series, and have all turned into my favorite way to waste time on the Net. Check them out.

That pesky GF of mine demands that we go out tonight… so I might lose this one. Or at least the first two quarters.

by LatinD on Feb 3, 2009 4:04 PM CST reply actions

Well, I’m gonna do my best to be here for the game thread tonight. I think all mojo conclusions from last night should be null and void. The only bad mojo that had an impact on last night’s game was from Coach GT himself, taking Duncan out and playing tinyball with the Warriors will doom you regardless of the positive mojo the fanbase is bringing.

I think SA will win this one, we always seem to make Denver play poorly. (or maybe they do it on their own).

I’ll be with you guys in spirit. Sadly, I won’t be able to catch this one at all. I got a call to do a job interview in Seattle – it’s only a 24-hour drive. Anyway, I hope we can pull this one out, but it’s going to be tough.

Pickaxe and Rolling!

So I hate the Spurs … sue me!
The team always seems to get the best of Denver and Denver always seems to play rather poorly against the Spurs. Plus the Spurs do what they do best all the time. If I lived in S.A. you bet I’d be a fan, but living in Denver made me a Nuggets fan.

I respect the Spurs and their Big 3 b/c they play the game so well, but I can’t ever see myself rooting for them in any aspect … unless of course it helped my Nuggets out.

Good luck tonight … as always even if Denver is favored in this matchup they’ll always be the underdogs to S.A.

Good luck to your guys, but better luck to ours. And let’s just have everybody avoid the injury bug that seems to be infecting the league right now. Both our teams have had their fair share of injuries this year already, we don’t need any more.

I’ll be back on Sunday for the Celtics game, but until then…..peace.

Maybe I was too harsh? Hmm. Then again, you did call Manu “Baldspot”.

Seriously, I browsed Denver fansites for a few hours yesterday, and the amount of hate for our team was incredible. I think the Suns like us more than you guys. Got to me.

I’m going to be fair and quote you properly:

It’s safe to say I don’t like the Spurs. I have never liked the Spurs. I would like nothing else but for the Nuggets to beat the Spurs. But that said I respect their style and their dominance in getting teams to play at their tempo.

Nice preview as ATS said, and good luck some other day.

by LatinD on Feb 3, 2009 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

Hurdle

I think the Suns have a little more to gripe about than the Nuggets when it comes to the Spurs, but S.A. has put Denver out of the playoffs twice …

Old Baldspot Manu! ha. I still recall Denver bringing Manu in when he was a free agent and trying to lure him away – guy was loyal to the Spurs and stayed and has since killed Denver every time he plays us.

Be sure to catch my recap tomorrow for my thoughts on the win or my anger over the loss…

The Spurs have a pretty good chance in this game.

And “Forget Paris” is a GREAT movie. I always remember the line when Crystal is talking to The Admiral, and I think a foul is being protested (maybe) and he says something like, “David, you’re makin’ 5 million a year…”

Have there been any PtR girls that wrote the game recap?

Of course, there’s always the danger of it becoming a cheesy lovefest for Manu (as if the men don’t do this already), but it’d be good to hear the female side of basketball once in a while (right… so maybe I should just watch WNBA games).

I just spent the last 13 hours in my car today dealing with CO drivers. They, as a general rule, are what I call “fucktards”. So, as a result, I have decided that I’m appointing myself “Traffic Czarina of the US of A”. Catchy title, right? My first rule is – If you’re not going 10 mph over the speed limit, get your ass out of the left lane. I’d like to have a whole book of Traffic Czarina rules, so that when I take over, I can make all the idiot drivers take MY driving test. So, please, if you have any good ideas, please send them my way. I’ll be sure to credit the good ones.

Thank you for listening. You may now go back to your alcohol of preference.

I wasn’t able to make it to the game due to my sister using the Eminent Domain law on the computer. I would check the score every once in a while on ESPN, and when I saw we were down by 14 I was like, oh shit…Then they added a note that Pop wasn’t playing the Big Three, what the hell? I never wanted to be on PtR so much in my life, I just wanted to read the comments as people found out about Pop’s move. I gotta say, I didn’t even get mad, first thing I thought was, the balls on this guy…second thing, why the fuck did he do that?
But hey, it was a winnable game and we lost by 8, not bad…
