San Antonio Spurs vs Cleveland Cavaliers - The Game Thread

Cleveland Cavaliers at San Antonio Spurs, Feb 27, 2009 8:30 PM CST

It's going to take a lot of negativity to get us over the hump tonight.  I'll do my share.  What will you do?

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - Mo Williams is an all-star baby. An all-star. Tony will be tired.
  • Off Guard - Delonte West shoots 43% from downtown. Roger is, um, not so good any more. So I hear, at least.
  • Center - The Big Z is going to give Kurt fits.
  • Power Forward - I like Bonner's chances against Wallace if he is playing on the leg he broke last night. Not so much against the energetic Argentine.
  • Small Forward - FinDog has been on fire and I think he'll dominate this matchup.
  • Bench - We are starting to look thin on the bench.
  • Coach - Mike Brown has all those smart-looking glasses. Pop has a beard.
  • Intangibles - They'll be plenty hungry after their showing in Houston last night and I think our guys might be quick to lay down and call a 2-1 record without Tim a moral victory.
  • Mojo - We are champions. They are from Cleveland.
  • Winner - Don't like our chances, to be honest.

Keys To The Game

  • Tony - Can Cleveland contain him at all? If he continues to roll, who knows.
  • FinMasonBruceIme - I imagine they'll all get a crack at defending Bron-Bron. Will any of them be effective?
  • Turnovers - We can't afford to turn the ball over in the open court, meaning none thrown out of bounds-traveling-double dribble turnovers.

I'd rather eat my own legs than acknowledge Lebron

I hope he tears a stocking on the way to the game and is unable to partake of the sumpteous feast.

Also as if the beard doesnt put Bowen on Lebron and the octogenarian ninja holds him to 50 & 15.

More than a handle, which is more than a pony and about the same as a middy? Is it a Pot in W.A?

Either way it tastes like victory

Lebron was limping a little bit after he came down funny when Yao blocked his last shot attempt. I don’t think it was too rough a spill, but he might be slower tonight.

Wallace is going to be out so we’re going to need to attack the frontcourt. Expect muchos floppos from varajao. He had an absurd one last night that, thank god, the refs swallowed their whistles, and cleveland was rewarded with a 3ball in their grille. sweet justice.

Yeah...so

After watching the Rockets dismantle this Cav’s team last night, I was thinking about it and I wouldn’t mind seeing those Rockets play the Lakers in the playoffs…preferably before the Spurs play either of them. I think that might be a good series for them to beat up on each other.

Also, I think we’ve got a good chance tonight. Bron-bron is going to be pissed about losing last night and going to try to out score us by himself…which is good.

by Big50 on Feb 27, 2009 10:07 AM CST reply actions

Is Tim not playing again tonight?

Each team will be down a big man, then. The Spurs are coming off two inspired wins, minus 2 of the big 3. The Cavs are coming off a blowout loss that Lebron was apart of, on the road. They are now down another starter. Oddly enough, I like our Spurs chances.

There’s no way we win this. If wallace isnt playing then our possibilites go to null. I was hoping Wallace to be useless against a Duncan-less Spurs. Besides Parker is not that good. Those 2 games were a fluke. Can we trade him for Jason Kidd? He is a distributing point guard. Manu would love it.

Did anyone else see this last night?

At halftime of the Rockets-Cavs game, David Aldridge was interviewing Shane Battier and asked him how they were defending LeBron so well and in the midst of Shane’s response Shane said “he’s the MVP”. This kind of surprised me because he said “the” MVP, not an MVP candidate or something else like that. I think Lebron most likely will win the MVP, but it’s not 100% certain and he’s not the reigning MVP. I wonder if Kobe was watching and thinking how many points he wanted to drop on the Rockets next time.

I hope Kobe gets crazy made and tries to score 80 again….ahh the good old Kobe days.

Dear, Dear ATS, I really hate your preview. It lacks a certain creativity… especially the nicknames. I truly did not LOL. And the mojo pick? I know SA is Championship City, but Cleveland does have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame… please remember that.

Stampler, regarding your most recent post, I’d really like you to stop the incessant fawning over Tony Parker… all you write about is the greatness of Tony Parker. And Tony Parker rocks and Tony Parker is my love God and so on and so forth. Please remember to share the love with those less fortunate players… like Manu and Tim.

Matthew, I know you’re trying to be our new version of Little Miss Sunshine. However, that title’s already taken and Hipuks is very happy with it. So could you tone down the optimism a bit? No one likes a Pollyana 365 days of the year. Everyone likes a little rain sometimes… you know what I mean?

Leaving horrible destruction blotting out the works of man

Will you rise and meet your Savior in the end?

In honor of the Aussies who follow the Spurs, I present to you Neoceratodus Forsteri " Australian Lungfish. There used to be seven species of lungfish in Australia, but all have gone extinct except this one. This fish has remained the same for about 100 million years, which means this mofo beat out the dinosaurs in the whole "survival of the fittest" thing. According to Tropical Fish Hobbyist, this species is now confined to a small section of southern Queensland where it inhabits slow moving portions of the Burnett and Mary River systems.
This monster can grow up to 67 inches, although that rarely happens in the aquarium. More common is a size of 36 inches, still pretty huge. A fish like this needs a tank with a footprint of about 72 inches by 24 inches, in other words, a HUGE tank.
It can live out of water for a few days if its skin is kept moist. Carnivorous feeder.

by bones on Feb 27, 2009 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

I’d admit that Sean sucked. But Eddie’s a good coach. I didn’t know much about Ford before this year, so I’m reserving judgment. He has shown the ability to change styles, which had been necessary.

Good people drink good beer - Hunter S. Thompson

by CapHill on Feb 27, 2009 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

i was just sticking up for rick barnes. i say he’s a really good coach. ford might wind up being pretty good – but he just got reprimanded by the university for his foul language on the sidelines – and calling one of his payers an idiot.

eddie was good – but he ran the team into the ground the last 4-5 years.

by bones on Feb 28, 2009 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

and let me say this – i’m good with the pokes. i actually went out with a softball payer from there briefly and that kind of gave me me a good impression of the place. that and the one famous-ish bar (eskimo joes?).

great hoop atmosphere there.

by bones on Feb 28, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

Eddie didn’t always adjust on the offensive end like he should have the last few years, but his teams always paid hard-nosed defense. OSU’s increased intensity on the defensive end over the course of the year is one reason I have some hope in Ford’s coaching ability, plus his changes in the offensive sets. And I don’t have a problem with coaches cussing on the sidelines, at least in college/pros, although they shouldn’t call their players “idiots”, even though I’ve been known to yell that at the TV myself.

by bones on Feb 27, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

Barnes is a GREAT recruiter. And I think the kids love playing for him, but he doesn’t always make good adjustments during a game. I’m not saying he sucks, but he’s not on the level of a Self.

Good people drink good beer - Hunter S. Thompson

by CapHill on Feb 27, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions

few schools can rule the world in both football and basketball. texas is now one of them and i put the blame solely on the shoulders of rick barnes. and…ummmm….no. i am not related to rick barnes.

confession – i went to the other OSU (ohio state) HA. barnes was a top asst there back in the day and actually turned down the head coaching job. he was highly thought of there and brought in a lot of good talent in his day there. i am envious of what he has done since he left, thinking that it could have been for my team. the bucks have been solid, but texas has turned into one of the premier hoop schools in the country…..penders had some good run there, but barnes has it on a completely different level.

by bones on Feb 28, 2009 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

for sure

People look at X’s and O’s on game day to judge how good a coach is. But there are many aspects to a coach’s job description, not least of which are recruiting talented players and getting them to play hard for you. Rick Barnes excels in most areas of coaching, but I think he’s mediocre offensive game planner. All in all, though, he’s probably an A- or A level coach, and better than all but a handful of schools in the country.

by tomasito on Feb 28, 2009 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

Thanks, tomasito. You expressed my thoughts better than I did. I have no problems with Barnes and think he’s a pretty classy guy. Hell of a game last night, though. Being a fan of both the Pokes and Spurs this year has resulted in some very tense game endings for me this year.

48 also was pretty high on Gist. I don’t think Fab is going to be playing for us next year.

Also, I have some ideas about Pops. I’m sure this has been thought of before, but someone’s going to have to talk me out of it. Why not use him at the 3? His size and athleticism are perfect for playing the 3. Sure, he can’t shoot from outside, but we already have a 4(Bonner) that can do that. With this kind of lineup, we can actually use the 3 as an advantage(once he actually learns the system).

At least for a night, I felt like a Clippers fan, watching all the dunking, all the promising youth (mixed with crappy veterans) all the energy while watching my team lose by 20 with the game decided in the 3rd quarter.
It was a fun 3 game run, I never expected to be 2-1 without the big 2, but dear god PLEASE MANU AND TIM GET BACK INTO THE COURT!

Clippers fan is actually right on the money. Because all the “promising youth” on our roster will probably be gone by next season. I mean how long do you expect Hairston or Mensah Bonsu to be around?

by r21x on Feb 27, 2009 11:30 PM CST up reply actions

Both look like keepers to me. The funny thing is that you put them on lottery teams and play them 30+ minutes and they will look like “the next stars”. Seriously, do you think Malik couldnt do what Rudy gay does? We have “promising young talent” like a lot of teams, the difference is that we dont use them a lot because we have actually great players.
