Let’s watch him play first… boxscores and report can only do so much.

That is not in the spirit of PtR. Pops is an exciting athletic player, therefore he is worthy. His play has little to nothing to do with it.

He’s already worth it, since there’s no risk involved. I just don’t want to predict numbers without a reference.

okay, i came back down to earth now. i now realize that this has to do with timmy’s sore knee and nothing more. just some insurance for the next few games and to keep other teams (the Raptors worked him out last week!) from snatching him up under our noses. he prolly won’t even come off the IL unless FSM forbid, timmy is still hurt tomorrow night.
/prays for a blow out in CLE so he can see Pops put on over on bronbron in garbage time

This does make me wonder if Timmy really is injured.
by Tim C. on Feb 24, 2009 11:58 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
yes Timmy is hurt (who knows how bad), but this signing is mere coincidence. Pops was apparently offered two other contracts to look at, and he chose the Spurs, so that tells me that he was offered before the news of Tim’s knee.

I am looking forward to seeing how good this guy can be. It’s been awhile since we’ve had some good hype about a big…oh wait, no it hasn’t. Maybe we’ll get to see him play, that’ll be a step in the right direction.

I realize that I am probably deeply, deeply in the minority with this opinion . . .
But DAMN this is a fun season.

Prepare yourself and hope that Pop gives this guy a chance, friends.

I do. And I counter with the exact same point, concerning your new venture.

Of course. …Not that I think it’s worthy of comparing to Pops.

I think this guy deserves a shot. I just think Rasho would be a better fit mid- to late-season than someone who’s only been in our system for 3-4 weeks. That said, I hope Pops proves me wrong.

Why couldn’t we have both?

Over at 48minutes, Graydon has been harping about Pops for a while now. The consensus a month ago was that the Spurs are gonna give him a look(unless pressured by other teams otherwise) after trade deadline if they can’t land any proven talents or wait even longer if they can afford to see who gets waived etc.

From a poster called gwilly on spursforum
"I was watching the Mavs game last night and it occurred to me how amazing Coach Pop really is. Now I obviously already knew this, a long with most Spurs fans, but I saw it in a whole new perspective. I remembered watching the Miami Heat game from the first of the season when Manu was out. Parker sprained his ankle in the first quarter and we were left with just one of the big 3. We preceded to get our butts handed to us. Van Gundy and company made comment after comment about our role players being inferior. "I mean look who they have on the floor right now. They just can’t compete with other NBA talent with these guys. " The sad thing is that with the way we looked I actually believed them. But this is what makes Pop the best coach in the league in my mind. He can take mediocre to subpar talent and fit them into a system where they benefit the team. He teaches basketball iq and fundamentals, and gives these guys a fighters chance. I mean how often over Pop’s time here has a new addition (besides a D leaguer) not benefited from his arrival in SA. I can’t think of many (Damon, Van Exel, Jackie Butler were hopeless).
Now with 4 months under his belt to teach and build confidence, these “inferior players” are coming around and making the other teams look like the inferior ones. You know as well as I do that besides our Big 3, Roger Jr, and George Hill that most guys on our team would be seeing very limited minutes on any other team in the league if any at all. I guess the bottomline is Pop does more with less than any coach I’ve ever known. Not that our guys really are “less”, but without Pop’s faith in them and excellent basketball teaching I couldn’t see them contributing to this extent on any other team. Thanks Pop."
True eh.

I think RC contributes to that, also. I mean, the guys we have are (usually) the kind that are willing to put aside their egos, learn a role, and listen to the coaches.

Amen to both.
If fans of other teams understood this perspective and thought in this same mentality the NBA would be a different league. It’s the players like our big 3 and supporting cast that make me proud to be a Spurs fan.

The Spurs are one of the few teams that understands you need patience to achieve success. We take our players and groom them so they become better and better. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Some teams/fans expect you can just stick a bunch of guys together and make something happen.
