Alfajores???
On a note unrelated to basketball (unless you count the fact that Manu is from Argentina), I am hoping one of the excellent people here from PTR who live in Argentina might be willing to help me out.
You see, in late 2007, my wife and I were lucky enough to take a three week trip through Chile, Argentina (my fav) and Brazil. Besides wearing my Ginobili jersey with pride and getting to sample some amazing Malbec and beef first hand, I also discovered dulce de leche, and more specifically, Alfajores. I love Alfajores!
I live in Toronto, Canada (don't get me started on last weeks Raptors game and for the record I have been a Spurs fan since I was 11 years old (I'm now 31) - right around when Robinson entered the league and basketball started receiving mainstream media coverage in Canada) and every since my stash of Alfajores that I brought home with me finally disappear last year, I have been searching for replacements. Some locally made ones I found in Toronto just aren't as good the real thing and some imported ones my wife order over the internet did not work out (over priced and bad customer service).
This brings me to me current plea for help. Are there any PTR's who live in Argentina who might be willing to ship a fellow Spurs fan some Alfajores (or recommend a good company who imports to Canada)? Of course, I would provide the funds (and a little extra?) to purchase said Alfajores through paypal or any other preferred payment method.
Thanks for your time... off to watch the first half of the Spurs/Knicks game (here's hoping GInobili's ankle is ok) before heading out to my own game tonight.

Thing is, TDot, Alfajores won’t make it past customs. It’s food, so as far as I know you can’t just mail it. Next year when I travel to SA I could take a box or two with me, though. Not sure how I can send it from there to Toronto, though.

I’m not sure how it works in Argentina or Canada, but you could mail them to the United States. Here’s a link:

A while ago I mailed tortillas from San Antonio to a friend studying abroad in Japan.
Since it’s not for business purposes, I bet you’d be all right. TdotSpursfan, you might look into relevant customs issues in Canada and let our Argentineally-inclined friends know the results.

Hm. Well, they didn’t let me mail alfajores to Spain once… I don’t know.

I did a little bit of digging and I didn’t see anything that would prevent the mailing alfajores on Canada’s end so if anyone is willing to give a try, please let me know.

I have no idea what alfajores are but perhaps you can find a recipe and perfect it to your liking.

It’s an Argentinian pastry. Difficult to make on your own. And even if you do it, you’ll never match the ones done by experts. I mean, I imagine even getting proper dulce de leche is difficult in Toronto…

Hell to the yes. Those things are awesome.
In this fat ass country, I never understood why alfajores are not wildly popular.

Much to my delight, President’s Choice (a Canadian brand sold at one of our supermarket chains) released a dulce del leche product about half a year ago. It’s actually pretty good, but not as good as the stuff I had while in Argentina. I found a store in Toronto that has some dulche de leche imported from Argentina, but alas, the price for the imported stuff was on the high side (the store also had homemade alfajores, but not imported ones).

My wife (who really is a keeper) tried making homemade alfajores for my birthday. They were good (and I really appreciated the effort), however, as LatinD points out, homemade alfajores are just not as good as the professional ones.

I could REALLy use some San Antonio Barbacoa. It was kind of a Sunday tradition growing up as a kid.

I bet you could have some shipped to you. I know a lot of barbecue restaurants ship stuff, so some of the bigger restaurants in SA probably would as well. You might want to call on the mighty powers of Google.
