Reasonable way to improve the Spurs... I think
Hello everyone, been reading for a while, and noticing all these little fanposts here and there about trades and stuff. I'm sort of 50/50 on the whole idea of trading for Carter, which would ultimately look something like this, while Oberto and Bowen have been bad, trading away depth in the forms of Mason and Hill are kind of leery to me, especially for the big contract of an old player. While flooring Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Vince Carter, Tim Duncan, and Matt Bonner would make it difficult to double anybody in the 4th quarter, I think Spurs can do better.
A lot of talk has been made about Rasheed Wallace, who personally expressed interest in going to the Spurs. However, I don't think that the Spurs really have a whole lot they can offer to the Pistons that would be anything super appealing. Honestly, the package they threw out for Carter would probably be the best thing they can offer, and probably the best thing they can throw out for 'Sheed as well. So I'm not sure that Joe Dumars would go for that, unless you get a 3rd team involved somehow.
My personal solution, I think won't cost as much and honestly I think helps significantly. That is, go to Sacramento. Make something like that, I'm sure you can make something better that works (maybe?). Ultimately, take whatever you're throwing at Carter and/or 'Sheed, tack on Jacque Vaughn's expiring contract and collect Miller and Salmons. It's pretty obvious that Sacramento wants to get rid of Miller and Salmons, and the contracts of Bowen and Oberto are less than Miller's and shorter than Salmons's. Not sure if Sacramento wouldn't ask for some talent, so I throw in Roger Mason, but not both Mason and Hill. Salmons adds a scorer who's known for defensive tenacity, sure you give up some 3s, but you can't have everything. Additionally, Miller gives you a high post scorer/passer to play off of Duncan, he's no rebounding stalwart, but he's smart on the floor and can really make the frontline a potent offensive force, using his passing skills and mid-range game to full effectiveness. This is my call as to the most reasonable trade San Antonio can do to get better. If the Kings go out and waive someone so the Spurs can pick them up again for cheap, all the better.

As Far as Sheed goes
Like I’ve said before, wait until next year, and if REALLY wants to play with Spurs and alongside Timmy, then maybe (not likely) he’ll sign for less money.

Yeah, that makes sense. But we never know what will happen next season. We have a team that’s almost there right now. That’s where the sense of urgency comes from.

That’s the point. We need Sheed NOW. Next year is another completly different thing. We could have Mahinmi or a rookie. We could have a free agent signed.

I like the general idea of this deal – with Sac for Salmons and Miller, but boy, it has a lot of question marks, the biggest of which is this: Does Brad Miller have anything left? He’s always been a decent on-ball defender, but he’s always seemed a step slow on help defense and he’s not a great shot blocker. But he’s a big man with a decent jumper. Hey, don’t we have Kurt Thomas already?
I also think I’m opposed to any deal that send Roger Mason Jr elsewhere. The second version does not include him, but I’m not sure why you’d do that deal if you are Sac.
As I said yesterday in another thread, I’m voting for standing pat right now. We have not seen the best this team has to offer yet.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that we’re not getting Sheed, it’s far too unlikely and we’re not a risk-taking team, financially speaking. This pretty much also rules out Carter as well, although I don’t see him as a viable possibility beyond the contract concerns anyway. Chandler’s off the table as of today, but Salmons/Miller are still viable options. However, considering that we’d have to really mix things up to add them and we’re not traditionally in the habit (with a very difficult system for players to learn) of integrating so late in the year, I put the odds getting them very low as well.
The strongest options I see now are-
A. Adding a lesser known big man not generating as much buzz, and hope that he simply adds stability and rebounding. Think Kuberto 2.0.
B. Gambling on Mensah-Bonsu and throwing him out there. We could lay down a 10-day to see the skills in The Show, and hope that his skill-set and athleticism/enthusiasm complement Tim well and that he fills the gaps we have in the 4/5. This is where I’m leaning…… I think this kid could light us up well and provide the spark at the big that we sorely need. There’s no need to make massive changes stemming from great risk or sacrifice, we’re close to being ready now. We just need an athletic big that commands attention. Minimal risk, potential of great reward. Plus, he can dunk, so that’s refreshing. The bandwagon rolls out this evening, grab your seats now.

i think i’m leaning more and more in this direction as well. if it happens, it will most likely happen after the trade deadline, but i’m intrigued by this dude (maybe it’s too much 48oH that’s influencing me though).

We get a solid big with a short contract, and a young guy to give to the Toros, possibly opening up a spot for Malik

Not a horrible idea...
Was thinking about this though, which might work.

Salmons Miller would be nice
but in youre scenario the Kings wouldnt even have 4M dollars worth of expiring contracts, surely they could do better than that, as much as Id like to have those two

Hard to make it work...
It’s mostly budget, as they lose a year on the Salmons contract and the combined remaining contracts next year are all less than Miller’s contract.

Well they seem to be in a firesale type of mood anyway, and not everyone going to them would be bad to resign anyway.

Whoa, the Charlie V deal looks great! Sadly, no one would take Fab for a deal straight up.
