Game Thread #51: Spurs at Raptors
San Antonio Spurs at Toronto Raptors, Feb 11, 2009 6:00 PM CST
Last game before the all-star break. I'm glad I didn't get invited to all-star weekend because I need the time off. After all, I didn't get to ride the pine for the Nuggets game.
Let's end the first half in style and set the tone for the second half of the season.

Nice game before the break.
What are we all doing AS weekend?
Is it a big thing for NBA fans in the US?
Not even remotely. It’s the equivalent of Bastille Day in Austrailia. Most true NBA fans couldn’t care less and are just happy that their team is getting to rest. I think it’s mostly only acknowledged by gang members and 10 year old boys.
Gonna BBQ and head up to the mountains to get away from the cell phone and the laptop. It’s gonna be sweet.

I like watching the activities surrounding the All-Star game more than the game itself. Last year’s dunk contest really was fun, even if the “judges” were full of shit. It’s interesting, too, to watch the players on the bench reacting to things like the dunk contest, the three-point shootout, etc. You get a good sense of who’s popular among their peers and so on. This weekend, though, I’ll be traveling around the New England area and I’ll most likely miss the whole thing. I’d love to watch Durant play H-O-R-S-E and no, I refuse to call it by its new corporate name. I hope that stunt blows up in that gecko’s cute little green face, seriously. Bastards. And fuck the cavemen, too.
Can you get me some New England clam chowder and send it to me by mail? Thanks.

Do you live in New England, Lauri, or just going on vacation?

Neither, sg — I’m going to New Haven for nuclear brain imaging (part of a medical study, long story but there’s nothing wrong with me (that we know of!) ) and then taking a side trip to visit a friend in New Hampshuh.
Wow, this sounds like a good story! How do you get involved in something like that? Does it pay well??
I love New England…have fun!

It doesn’t pay at all, except for the airfare and a hotel room. I’m doing it as part of this study. (My grandmother died of Parkinson’s and my dad was just diagnosed, and since it seems to run in my family, I was a perfect candidate.)
I love New England, too — traveled through it extensively when I used to live in NYC. I’m not so sure I would have chosen mid-February as the perfect time to revisit, but . . .
Sorry to hear about that; I recently lost a relative to Parkinson’s as well.

All Star game reminds me of professional wrestling. You appreciate some of the athletic capabilities of those involved, but it isn’t real.
Also, those sites above for the live feeds—which I may be using tonight if I can—always remind me that corporations need to catch up with their business models. There’s too much technology in the hands of too many people for companies to be protective of who watch’s what and when.
NBA.com should be making ad revenue off of these games worldwide.

He is an alright player. He played his college ball at Oklahoma State. He dropped 24(appx.) on the great defender we know as Kobe a week or so ago. I think he may be a year or two away from being a solid NBA player.

Did anyone watch all the recaps on NBA-TV last night?
They showed the Spurs-Nets game highlights, Chris Webber said, “Oh lemme guess, the Spurs won?”. Then they showed Bonner’s highlights, Gary Payton accidentally called him Scalabrine, and when corrected said something to the effect of, “They all look the same…”

Actually, two are, smartass. But we have a “chicks before d**ks” rule, so every Valentine’s Day weekend (usually we aren’t gone on the actual V-Day "holiday") for the past 3 years, we’ve gone to the beach, no matter if we’re in relationships or not. We drink, go out dancing, and just have a crazy time!

The Incline
Also called the COG railway. You have to be in good shape for this, but a lot of wannabe Olympians (and some real ones) train there in the mornings.
When you see the female triathlon runners you will understand … I didn’t know spandex could get that tight.
I also had some good times at that Broadmoor resort. It’s hit or miss, but they have great conventions … Jazz concerts, women’s gymnastics (weird, I know) and none of the soldiers hang there so you don’t have any competition.
The independently wealthy recently-divorced cougar can also be spotted in that region of town.
Anyway, just some suggestions.

No, you’re right. The Broadmoor is decent for scouting and the Incline is nice as well.
