Poll: When to Panic?

Hi PTR-ers. We are 18 games into what is supposed to be a 'warm-up' for another deep playoff run, and our beloved San Antonio Spurs are 9 and 9. That's good for 3rd place in the Southwest division, and a 9th place ranking in the Western Conference standings. I know the Spurs are a "2nd half of the season" kind of team, and I know come February, they are supposed to flip that switch and miraculously start firing on all cylinders. But let's be real here, this is not the way for a championship contender to start the season. This is not Spurs ball. There has been too much lazy play, way too many turnovers, lax defense, lax offense, not enough rebounding, and too...many...missed...free-throws! We have a few bugs to sort out. A few suggestions as to what could be the problem(s) have come up in conversation thus far, but are not limited to (and in no order): Has Pop lost it? Is Manu not really fully recovered? Is Tony hogging the ball? Is it too early to call the RJ trade a bust? Do we need another move? Did we miss an oppurtunity? Are we too old? When do we panic??

[ Enlighten me, if you dare: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine ]

Excellent poll. We’re not too far removed from the five game winning streak. We may panic only after we lose three straight games to decent to good teams.

click to embiggen..

though i’m not sure either team would actually go for it…though i think grangers an upgrade over jefferson, and foster would be a good addition (and he’s originally from san antonio).

I guess the Spurs would take it. But why would the Pacers?

i’m not sure the spurs would necessarily. its a definite talent upgrade, but its even more money in terms of luxury tax (almost $5 million more in luxury tax), we’ve struggled to integrate jefferson as it is (granger demands more of the ball), we’d have to waive/release someone to accomodate foster (i assumed we’d waive price)…i’m not convinced management would actually go for it.

the pacers? nah, they wouldn’t. they lose their franchise player, they lose a hard working player and team favourite (foster has been there for over 10 years now), and all they get is jefferson in return. they get no expiring contracts, so it doesn’t really help their salary position. i really think theres no way they’d go for it.

the selfish spurs fan in me would like to see it happen. the pacers fan in me (they’re my second fave team) says fuck off.

Nice try, but Granger is now out for 4 weeks, so I’d say no.

Personally, I prefer to panic at all opportunities. I feel it’s my duty as a sports fan to be irrational and emotional.

Our schedule is still really easy right now. That Suns game was a spike in the strength of schedule. We’ll be heavy favorites in every game up until the Dallas game on Jan 8th. Even if we drop 2 games in that span, our record will be a much better 21-12 which will likely be good for 3rd or 4th in the west and in striking distance of 2 and 3.

We can afford to be patient until the Rodeo Road Trip/ trade deadline.

by BlaseE on Dec 16, 2009 3:31 PM CST up reply actions

I just spent a ton of money on Christmas presents for godchildren and friends’ kids who don’t know the fact that I exist, let alone my name. I then lovingly and (almost) beautifully wrapped each and every gift in shiny paper, which those brats will so easily rip to shreds on Christmas day. I now have practically no cash and my Christmas dinner will probably consist primarily of canned goods, and I’m figuring out a way to pay my internet bill on time.

Among the many things, to be patient is one that I cannot afford. I want the Spurs to win games now. Until June.

Please, FSM.
