This is some good stuff right here. Every night, Hoopdata takes the info from games the night before and produces a boxscore that goes well beyond "regular" statistics. For example, here's last night's Spurs win over the Clippers.

It is kind of freaky if you go to the “Team” stats. At this point of the season, the LAL have a better defensive efficiency than SAS. And SAS has a better offensive efficiency than LAL. Not what one would expect. (Or I could just be reading it wrong.)

Nope, it’s been that way all year. What Artest giveth on D, he taketh away on offense.

So you’re saying that’s what you expectedth? OK.

Spurs are a top 5 offensive team, but I am disappointed with the D. I expected the Lakers to be slightly worse on O and slightly better on D, but it seems somewhat exaggerated at this point.

This is why I haven’t banned you yet. Occasionally, you’re actually funny. ;-) That, and it’s fun to see you get all riled up about the “Team of the Decade” debate. There has been a preponderance of those articles lately.

Well thank you. I just finished all my shopping so I’m in the holiday spirit. Here have a colorful Spurs Christmas tree ornament:

And when I say colorful I mean the tree of course. :)

Does your closeted love for the Spurs know no bounds?

I say it doesn’t.

Merry Christmas, olf. Guys like you aren’t gowning on trees.

They need to put a key with what some of the abbreviations mean to make it even better.

by Spurlady on Dec 22, 2009 8:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Spurlady, I’m guessing it’s like those really expensive jewelry places that don’t have price tags under the assumption that if you have to ask, then you can’t afford it.

Well, the thought here is this: if you don’t already know what the abbreviations are before you visit, then the advanced stats aren’t meant for your perusal. “Move along. Nothing to see here.”

I felt pretty left out, myself.

From the first set of box scores I think the only ones that are not clear are AFGM and CHG. My best guesses

  • AFGM —> Assisted Field Goals Made
  • CHG —> Charges produced defensively (this one is out there probably)

Im not sure what the column in the final set of box scores (advanced statistics) mean

Rebound rates, EFG% and TS% are explained here and here.

PC and PU are explained in the hoopdata site itself:

PC = Points Contributed: Pts + Ast*2/3 – AstFGM*2/3
PU = Possessions Used: FGA + TO + Ast*1/3 – AstFGM*1/3 + FTA*0.44

It’s the first time I’ve heard of either, but they seem to be pretty useful in determining which players, well, contributed to the offense.

Love all the new metrics. Our lack of understanding is not your fault. I look forward to perusing these boxscores in the future. Hey bossman, can we add a permanent linky for Hoopdata to the sidebar?

Just remind me, I can edit the blogroll/links section to add them.

Can you make the links play a little sliding whistle sound every time we click on them?

Mr. Treutlein put these up on 48 Minutes, since I’m not great at linking, I just copied and pasted the information.

“Since I’m sure it’s going to be asked about, we don’t yet have a glossary to define all the abbreviations on the new box score pages. That’s definitely something we’ll be adding in the coming days to make it easier to process for people unfamiliar with a lot of the metrics.

I’ll clear up some of the commonly asked ones now.

CHG = Charges Drawn
AFGM = Assisted Field Goals Made
BLKD = Own Shots Blocked

I think the Shot Locations are pretty simple enough, but if you’re unfamiliar with eFG%, it just gives extra weight to threes to compensate for their extra points scored.

USG = Usage Rate
AR = Assist Rate
TOR = Turnover Rate
ORR/DRR/TRR = Rebound Rates
TS% = Scoring efficiency measure that accounts for Free Throws and Threes
%AST = Percentage of player’s FGM that were assisted"

by Spurlady on Dec 23, 2009 3:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That helps, thanks. TS% = True Shooting Percentage, by the way.
