The popular gold strain P. semifasciolatus var. schuberti (Gold Barb or Schuberti barb) was developed by hobbyist Thomas Schubert of Camden, New Jersey in the 1960s through selective breeding. For many years it was thought to be a distinct species but is in fact a selected sport of the indigenous (green) species which is rarely found in aquaria.
In the wild, they inhabit running water with a pH range of 6.0 – 8.0, a water hardness of 5.0 – 19.0 dGH, a depth range of 0 – 5 metres and a temperature range of 64 – 75 °F (18 – 24 °C). Their diet consists of worms, insects, and plant matter.
An egg-scatter, adult barbs will spawn around a hundred eggs. This breeding occurs at the first light in the early morning.
The Gold Barb, a gold colour variant of the China Barb, is an active, peaceful schooling species that spends most of its time in the mid-level and bottom of the water. Its typical lifespan in captivity is around four to six years. This peaceful green-gold fish is often used in community tanks by fish keeping hobbyists. It flocks breed readily in outdoor pools and free-standing ponds during summer months, and withstands cooler temperatures better than other tropical fish. However, it does not stand the cold as well as its original plainer China barb counterparts.
Albino variants of the Gold barbs have been produced by Dennis Wilcox in the 1970s in the US. Gold barbs with no black markings have been observed by Stanislav Frank in Europe also around that time. Flesh colour (pink) specimens appeared by 1990s. Tri-colour, ie, black, orange and pink specimens appeared recently.

Nice try but no. I know you guys got that funny “Spurs math” that puts 1998-1999 in this decade but come on. The Lakers are the 2002 Champions.

But if you say that “2002 means the ‘02-’03 season” then 2007 means the ‘07-’08 season. The Spurs did great that year – until the Lakers sent them home.

So you can have 2002 or 2007 but not both.

Yep, I was being sarcastic. Surprisingly the Lakers have actually had players get injured too and it sucks. No one knows what will happen with either team.

Hmm. In the last dozen years or so, I dont think that an injury to a key player on LA has been arguably the direct reason for an early end to their season, the way it has been with San Antonio….

In 2004, after the Spurs eliminated them in 2003, the Lakers signed Karl Malone and Gary Payton. Three of the “big four”, however, struggled with injuries: Shaquille O’Neal suffered from a strained calf, Karl Malone with an injured knee and Kobe Bryant with a shoulder injury.

Malone would only play in the first few games in the Finals, as a knee injury would not allow him to dress for any further games. (But the Lakers still had the awesome Brian Cook, Stanislav Medvedenko & the aged Horace Grant to match up with the Pistons front line that included a young Rasheed Wallace, Ben Wallace, Mehmet Okur and Elden Campbell.)

Yeah, Karl Malone was indeed injured. But would he really have prevented the " 5 game sweep " ?

Kobe and Shaq looked pretty good to me in that series…

Who knows. But who knows what a hurt Manu cost the Spurs. Yes, I am sure you think a lot.

Or if you talk to a Celtics fan a hurt Bynum didn’t make any difference in 2008 when the (soft) Lakers had to use DJ Mbenga in the finals when Pau or Odom rested or had foul trouble. But it is certain that the Celts would have won last year with a healthy KG. (No, I am not saying Bynum is as good as KG.)

The Lakers "Too big, too strong, too long, too good."

by olf on Dec 17, 2009 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

If it makes you feel better, I’m pretty sure even a healthy Celtics team couldn’t have beaten the Lakers last year.

You think Kobe would want to lose to the same team in the Finals for the second year in the row, when that team is the franchise’s biggest rival?

And history wouldn’t have denied Phil his dethroning of Auerbach.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. Saying Karl malone was as important to the Lakers title hopes in 2004 as Manu is in ANY season is inaccurate at best.

...Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is forty five.

by alamobro on Dec 17, 2009 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

San Antonio wasnt winning anything last season, even with a 100% Manu.

But 2 years ago, despite the seemingly lopsided 5 to 1 series victory,San Antonio was in every game against Los Angeles except the last one. With double digit leads in several of the contests. Manu with two functional legs would have arguably tipped the scales.

( Detroit beat the hell out of Los Angeles in 2004, and youd be hard pressed to convince me Karl Malone would have made all the difference )

This whole conversation is silly to me. You can think whatever you want. You can have a “We would have won in 2008” parade and hoist a banner for all I care.

But injuries are a brutal part of the game and EVERY team deals with them to different degrees. I even feel bad for Portland this year but that won’t make them Western Conference Champs.

It was always clear thanks. My point is that it is incorrect to say that the Spurs won more games than the Lakers in 2002. (Fine with me if you say it. It is just not accurate.)

Just as it would not be accurate to say that the Lakers won more games in 2007 than the Spurs even though the Lakers went to the Finals in ‘07-’08 season, right?
