PtR Quick Cap: The defense didn't make the road trip...
...or maybe it went straight to Portland instead.
Here's your box score for this 113-99 loss. Read it along with me...
The two eye opening stats. 1) The Jazz shot 53%. 2) The Jazz had 14 offensive rebounds which was 41% of their missed shots. You will win approximately 1 game out of 82 giving up those numbers.Deron Williams ate the Spurs lunch. I was so disgusted by our defense I failed to be impressed by his masterful game. He scored 27 points, dished out 9 assists, and grabbed 7 rebounds. He also played some great defense on Tony in the second half holding him to just 4 points.
Your 3 UN-stars:
3 - Matt Bonner: 1-6 shooting, 1-5 from 3-point, 2 rebounds in 17 minutes
2 - First half Manu/Second half Tony: Manu hit the break with 4 points on 2-7 shooting, 2 turnovers and 0 assists. He didn't look right. Tony got shutdown in the second half and had 4 points on 2-5 shooting and 1 assist.
1 - George Hill: George was 1-8 from the field and that wasn't the worst part. He gave up lots of easy baskets on defense. Forced shots. Committed bad fouls. Williams scored at will on him. Not a good night for George at all.
Your 3 stars:
3 - RAGE: He wasn't great, but he was decent. He made some shots. He took it to the hole a few times.
2 - Parts of the Big 3: Tim, Tony, and Manu all looked good for stretches and mediocre and out of shape for others. They all ended with Ok numbers, but I wasn't thrilled with any of them.
1 - BLAIRRRR!!1!: He really wasn't that great. He padded his stats in the last two minutes of garbage time. However, I'm continually amazed at his ability to score in the paint in a crowd.

so…do i bother firing up league pass tonight and watching this game? the numbers don’t look good. the quick recap doesn’t sound good.
and i’m beginning to think we all let ourselves get deluded by our off-season acquisitions. yeah, our offense is better (supposedly)…but our defense appears to be phoenix-like. and we aint the suns on offense. “hey, we’re only 2-2!” yeah, but we shouldn’t be. beating sacramento and nawlins is NOT impressive.

I missed part of the game, however, I don’t think Theo Ratliff went in the game. In a game where they killed us in the paint both scoring and rebounding wise, wouldn’t it have made sense to put someone that can block/alter shots and get rebounds?
Blair is a monster on the boards, I hope to see more minutes for him along Timmy. I also hope he improves his defense somewhat, but that will come along.

Exaclty my friend – the PAINT, the PAINT, the PAINT. Same crap as last season, No Presence in the (Say it with Me) PAINT. I lost count on how many times I saw one Spur in the paint and four beyond the arc. Ridiculous. No one is going to respect you when you do not have an inside game. What else can I say? I think most of the fans here see it, I think most of the enemies see it, so why can’t the big brains up stairs see it and change accordingly?
Flip side being – everything is coming along, just need to give it………time?

I hope it’s just Pop messing with us like usual and trying his crazy line ups. I really expected to see Ratliff there with Bogans at one point since no one else seemed to be defending anybody. Our rotations were LATE, people in the paint with their backs turned to the ball (REALLY? WTF???), we kept getting beat off the dribble.
I do have to give it up to Williams and Boozer because they did make some though, challenged shots, but then the few that they missed, they got back on offensive boards.

I can handle Williams going off, but Boozer/Okur having such an easy time in the Paint is redonkulous. But it wasn’t just the bigs. The perimeter defense was also lazy and slow to rotate. And our ball handling. AACK. Just hope tonight goes better.

Let’s re-visit this after a few months. I think you’ll be feeling quite differently after the big 3 get in shape (Pop made Duncan delay his normal pre-season conditioning so that he’d hopefully have more left at the end of the year, Manu’s still coming back from the surgery and Tony’s ribs are still hurting) and the new guys have learned the defense.

We all knew this was going to be a work in progress, we just didn’t know how far we had to go. The defense is atrocious and needs to pick up immediately, offense will come in time, we have the weapons for that, but if we’re giving up 113 to the Jazz ( the first time in a decade where they scored more than a 100 against us and won), then we’re aren’t gonna get very far.

Too early to call for a TNT curse? I mean last week we played the back to back and this week we got five days off. Is it the rust?
The worst part is that we’re playing defense like one of them all offense teams like Warriors or Knicks but we can’t back it up with an efficient offense. For all this talk of lets run more, all I see is Tony Parker shredding defenses. Everyone else is flat footed like always. Ugh.

Against a team that had to be out for blood the way they choked in Dallas Tuesday night.
On the other hand, I’m not sure how long it will be before we see the ream ‘09-10 Spurs. Four days off hurt more than it helped (for now, though the practice time may show itself later). Second set of back to backs, all against playoff teams. And so many new pieces that seem to affect the defense cohesion most of all. We’ll be teetering around .500 before the team finds itself and takes off. Just no idea how long that will be.
And yes, can Malik get some playing time, Pop?
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

Yes, It's Early ... But
I still find it perplexing that Pop stated early that his goal for this year was to get the Spurs back on top defensively, yet he starts two of our weakest defenders (Fin and Matt) and Tony is inconsistent. And to those who say it doesn’t matter who starts, it’s who finishes: well, we were 10 down after the first quarter and never recovered. The tone is usually set early. Also, as I’ve posted before, when we got Kurt Thomas, Pop said he had coveted him for years. Yet, he never seemed to fit in. Pop never seemed to figure out how, when or why to use him. Now, it appears to be a repeat with McDyess. Did both guys lose that much in the year they came over or does Pop simply not know how to use them? Yes, it’s early in the season … but.

Both of our losses were serious trap games. Chicago’s home opener on a segababa, and now this loss to a Utah team that is too good at home to let themselves lose three games in a row. It doesn’t bother me that they wanted it more, but please start Blair and Mason instead of Finley and Bonner. Maybe we should even start Manu. I just think we need to mix it up.

At least McDyess, hell I’m all for Ratliff at this point. We don’t have anyone else that can defend the paint other than Tim, and when he goes for the contest, no one is there to defend or block out his man. Bonner is a great situational guy, same with Finley, but Mason has been lighting it up still, lets give him a chance to go with the first team.

All you are saying is that we met adversity in 2 of our first 4 games. We played 2 solid, well-motivated teams, though not contenders. We also played two train wrecks. Who would you expect to meet in playoffs? Not Sacto, for sure. The Lakers (minus Gasol) met adversity in 3 of their games already this season. They won 2 out of three.

minutes
In Chicago Tim and Tony played more minutes than anybody else on the team. Ditto in Utah. Our bench is supposed to be very good, so we shouldn’t need to overplay our stars. The Lakers are playing without Gasol. Orlando is playing without Lewis, and Pietrus or Carter. Still those teams look like they can beat anybody on a given night. I just want to see one game when the Spurs look like the best team in the NBA. Just some glimpses of brilliance. Just some hope that in May and June we would be able to beat LA, Denver, Dallas, Orlando, Boston and Cleveland. Right now I cannot see it happening. In spite of all personnel changes this team just looks like a team which played Dallas last spring. I’d be hopeful if New Orleans was our biggest rival. Unfortunately, there are about 15 or 20 better teams in the league, and we seem to be in the middle of the pack rather than on top.

First 10 Jazz shots of the game are 8 jumpers by assorted characters and 2 Deron Williams driving layups. At 7:25 Manu comes in for “horrible defender #1” Finley, followed soon by McDyess in for “horrible defender #2” Bonner. The next five Jazz shots are layups. In fact, during the rest of the first quarter, which includes defensive ace George Hill subbing for Tony, we see 9 layups vs. only 6 jumpers. The Jazz won the game in that stretch, grabbing a 10 point lead they held the rest of the game.

got down early – never recovered. best way to recover is by making stops and spurs never did it.
overall, i’m not yet super worried about the season prospects, but i must say that niether tim nor manu look quite right just yet.. we gotta get those two cookin here on short order, i think. and though his numbers aren’t terrible, it looks to me like mace is getting lost in the shuffle a little bit. a trend that i hope ends rapidly.
i am also semi-alarmed by the same sorts of things hindering the spurs yet again this year. giving up too many offensive rebounds and playing large stretches of the game with offensive stagnation. i guess i was hoping that all the new guys would give us an entirely new cast of things to bitch about.
getting out athleted by chicago is one thing. getting out athleted by the crusty utah jazz is another. big yikes on that. i dont care what the circumstances are, this was a terribly played game and a bad loss.
the biright side is that the spurs will have played a bunch of upper half teams after tonite and then we can feast on an easier and closer to home schedule between now and christmas, but they’ll have to make hay.
by bones on Nov 6, 2009 8:30 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
When you’re letting Okur beat you to the basket repeatedly, it’s time to try something new. Ginobili in the first half was not himself at all. He played a better second half, but you can see that he doesn’t have it yet, especially on the defensive side of the ball. I think Blair needs to start getting 25 + mins and some time with Timmy as well.
He’s got the best hands on the team, that includes Timmy.
by xman130 on Nov 6, 2009 9:07 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Great hands or no, Blair just doesn’t have it defensively yet. Did you watch him get burned on the pick and roll?
Playing time will help him, but then you’re talking about sacrificing games early in the season for better play later — which is what I’d prefer. But then you can’t complain our defense isn’t where it should be. You gotta wait for it to develop.

I’m with you on Blair’s defensive efforts. He’s not there yet, and I don’t think he’ll ever be a good individual defender. His gambles on the defensive side when he goes for steals sometimes puts the rest of the defense in a bad spot. To add to the pick-n-roll comment, no one from the Spurs playing good pick-n-roll defense last night. The help made half ass attempts at stopping the drive and we never had the original defender get back to his man on time. I would like to see more traps out of the pick-n-roll, at least to make them swing the ball around and have a better chance at getting those defensive rotations correct.
I think the only thing you sacrifice with Blair in the game is outside shooting. You can play Tim at the 5 and Blair at the 4, or any combination of McDyess/Theo & Blair. I’d also like to see Theo play alongside Timmy, I honestly thought that’s why he was brought in for, to help our interior defense and rebounding!!!

Defense didn't make the trip...
I’ve watched it twice now, first against Chicago and this time against Utah. The Spurs have not solved the defensive rebounding problem with McDyess and Blair. It wasn’t just Williams who took it to the rim at will, the entire Jazz team was doing it. Duncan obviously has lost his hops and his strength is doesn’t seem to be the defensive factor that he used to be and the rest of the league will take advantage of this right away. He was bullied around the basket and seemed weak against the Utah bangers. McDyess seemed to be just waiving the “here this way” flag at Utah’s penetrators. Okur, not the best post player in the NBA, absolutely used him. I think Pop has got to bring Mahinmi into the picture. At least he can get above the rim and block a few shots. Duncan isn’t in good enough shape to do it. I wonder if his left knee was hurt a lot worse than the team will admit last year? Ratliff should definitely get more time, but he will have trouble in transition and he probably can’t go more than 20 minutes a game anyway. Marcus Haislip, at 6’10" has great hops. Even if he hasn’t figured out the system yet I doubt if he will defend much worse than some of the guys out there now. And what’s with Bogan? He looks lost on the court and has absolutely no offensive game. Please Pop replace his with Hairston. Right now the Spurs are in complete disarray and Pop is going to have to inject some of his youthful players who aren’t even suiting up. Finally, the entire team seems to be out of condition. That is unforgiveable for professional athletes. That theory that the team can gradually come together as the season progresses is a crock. If you can’t haul down defensive rebounds and you are going to continually allow the opposition to snare 15 to 20 second chance shots than you are in for a very, very long season. That was a major weakness last year and it still is one now. I still love the Spurs, but like most I’m in a funk over what I have seen so far.
