Mantis Shrimp. There’s over around 400 species of Mantis Shrimp so I can’t give one specific scientific name.
The Mantis Shrimp is neither a shrimp, nor a mantis, proving people are very stupid when they name things. It is just named that way because it looks like a mix between a praying mantis and a shrimp.
While reading an excellent page about evolution, I came across this shrimp. The most interesting thing is their behavior when molting.
Like all arthropods, the Mantis Shrimp has an exoskeleton, a hard shell which protects it from the environment, makes the animal stronger, and so on. As cool as having an exoskeleton sounds, there’s one major drawback; while the animal keeps growing, the exoskeleton remains the same size, so the animal must periodically shed the old exoskeleton in order to have a new one to keep with its size. When they’re molting, they’re extremely vulnerable as the exoskeleton is very soft for a couple of days. I’ve had a couple of shrimp die from molting, as they did not find good enough hiding places, and were made a tasty meal by the fish.
Now comes the interesting behavior:
Many species of mantis shrimp live in underwater cavities, which provide protection. However, these cavities are in low supply. So mantis shrimp may compete fiercely with one another for homes, even staging fights in order to evict an opponent.
The shrimp are constantly fighting for these caves. Most of the time, the defender of the cave wins as they’re protected by the cave, and can stand at the mouth of the cave striking at the attacker, much like a praying mantis.
The problem comes while molting. The animal is soft and pretty much defenseless. The defender can choose to hide in the cave and hope the attacker doesn’t come inside, or it can escape, in which case it avoids a fight but is left without a cave, the third option though, is the most fascinating. The defender can choose to bluff, making the attacker believe it’s ready for a fight, when in truth a fight would quickly kill the defender.
When bluffing, the shrimp stands at the mouth of the cave as if ready to strike. These animals are highly intelligent, so they seem to size up an attacker before deciding whether to bluff or not.
Another cool behavior is that some Mantis Shrimp, days before molting, become highly aggressive, standing at the mouth of the cave and striking at anyone who passes by. These teaches the other shrimp not to mess with that one, so when the shrimp is molting, and bluffs by pretending to be ready to strike, attackers are more likely to leave them alone, as they remember the aggressive behavior from days before.
Of course, as defenders have evolved over millenniums to become better and better at bluffing, so have attackers become better at telling a bluff. And so the cat and mouse continues until shrimp figure out how to make guns.
I cannot believe I wrote all of that for a basketball blog.
