Austin Toros Draft Day

The D-League draft is Thursday night and the Toros are hosting a draft party at the Hyatt in Austin. The party starts at 6:00.

Some of the Toros roster is already set. To almost no one's surprise, Curtis Jerrells is on the squad.

Draft Express (as always, the greatest) had the lowdown on the squad. All the other teams are listed. You should check it out. There are some interesting names.

Here are the current roster guys for the Toros:

Justin Bowen (Veteran) - Returning player
Ryan Bright (Veteran) - Returning player
Fred Gibson (Veteran) - Returning player
Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson (Veteran) - Returning player

The drafted players will round out the roster. The Toros have the 6th pick in the draft. It's a serpentine draft so they'll have something like the 10th pick in the second round.

Wow – I probably watch as much as 300-400 college basketball games per year and I am familiar with like 10 guys on this list or fewer. For instance, I live in Cincinnati and coudnt tell you a thing about the guy on there from UC – other than he never got in games while at UC.

Lots of guys like that. Foreign leagues must be picking off the college players real good. Even the miscellaneous guys that aren’t stars. These are some slim pickings.

That said, CJ Anderson from Xavier is a homey for me, so I’ll say I hope he goes to Austin.

There are two guys on this list J’Nathan Bullock from Cleveland State and Jamelle Cornely from Penn State – both absolute beasts – but you’d never see a 6-5 PF in the league and they don’t have much range to speak of……

Mike Gansey reminded me a little of Manu when he was at WVU – I liked his game a lot….but he wasn’t even a poor man’s Manu, really….he was more like a homeless man’s Manu. I’ll root for the Toros to pick him up too.

JamesOn Curry from Okie State is a Curtis Jerrell’s type shameless gunner. He might be worth a look at Austin if he could refine his shot a little….

My last Austin Toros comment of the day – Anybody ever notice that coach Quin Snyder looks just like Hermie the elf that wants to be a dentist in the Rankin-Bass Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer Christmas special? Just sayin.
