Stirring the Pot: Travis Outlaw
Chad Ford:Travis Outlaw, Blazers: Outlaw has been somewhat a forgotten man in Portland. He's been a solid scorer and shooter for the Blazers the past few seasons. He's still young and athletic, and given all the money the Blazers are going to have to commit to young players such as Roy and Aldridge, he probably won't be re-signed by the team.
I could see Outlaw being a potential target for the Spurs next summer. Mason will probably be gone.

I like Outlaw. But you really think we’re letting Mason go? Or that we should? We have a lot of other expiring contracts. Bogans, Finley, Bonner, Ratliff and Mahinmi would not be re-signed. That saves us, what, 8M? Then we have to re-sign Manu and Mason. You think we won’t have enough to keep Manu, Mason and still sign Outlaw. I hope we do. We have a big coming, in Tiago, and Travis could take Fin’s spot as backup 3.

I LOVE this guy. He’s long, quick, and VERY athletic. He can play the 4 in a pinch and I’m pretty sure his defense is solid. BUT he’s a starter. Where do we play him with RJ starting? Like I really can’t what the point would be to pay this guy good money to play backup.
And I do believe if we sign him that means no Mason. We have the MLE but either one of these guys would at least take most of it, not leaving enough for the other. Unfortunately, we’ve only had Mace for 2 years so no Bird rights.

He’s not a starter(If he had to start, I’d say move RJ over to the 2). He’s actually 3rd string in Portland, behind Batum and Webster. I can see Outlaw and Hairston taking the place of Finley and Mason. And we have Manu’s bird rights, so we can use something besides the MLE on a guy like Outlaw, while 20 or so teams pursue Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Bosh, etc. Then we use the MLE on Splitter, and give Manu his paycheck. Or at least, that’s how I see it.

Even if we had to sign Outlaw and Mason at the same time, I think we could do it. As you said, Manu’s contract could come later. I think it’s all pretty doable.

Reflecting for a second, I don’t know why I though Outlaw HAD to start. I just really like him alot. But how does having MANU’s Bird rights mean we don’t have to use at least SOME of the MLE on Outlaw? I’m pretty sure free agents count towards their team’s cap for a certain amount until either that team signs them or some other team does.

Yeah I have that right about the free agent salaries. Read #29. That’s a really informative FAQ about the CBA. I’ve read alot of it.

Also, we have Early Bird rights on Mace so we can sign him to 175% of this year’s salary ($6,615,000) or the league average salary (whichever is greater).
Additionally, according to the rules I brought up Manu will count $15,287,720 until we sign him, which should be for about half that. So we may be better off signing Manu first and then using the rest of our cap.
Sorry I have so many posts. I drank some coffee and I really dig figuring out this kind of stuff.

When I started reading the title I thought this was gonna be about Josh Howard.
