Banggai Cardinalfish. Pterapogon kauderni

This species is restricted to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia.1This species has an extremely limited geographic range (5,500 km²) and small total population size (estimated at 2.4 million).2 The Banggai cardinalfish is composed of isolated populations concentrated around the shallows of 17 large and 10 small islands within the Banggai Archipelago.
The Banggai cardinalfish is a paternal mouthbrooder.2 Females play an active role in courtship and pair formation, which occurs a few hours up to a few days before spawning; mating pairs establish spawning territories several meters away from the main group and vigorously defend these territories.2 The large eggs are about 2.5 millimetres in diameter, with the young remaining within the mouth cavity for undetermined period after hatching.1
The species is collected by local fishers and traded as an aquarium species at unusually high levels. The species first appeared in the international trade in 1995–1996. By 2001, 600,000–700,000 fish were exported annually; trade estimates for 2001–2004 are 700,000–900,000 fish/yr with collection occurring throughout the archipelago. Surveys identified significant (>90%) declines in two populations that were fished from 2001 to 2004, including extinction of a population off Limbo Island.2
Collection for the aquarium trade has threatened this species with extinction.1 This increases the demand for captive-bred specimens. Although the proposal to protect this species under the CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) Appendix II was initially rejected,3 in September 2007, the Banggai cardinalfish entered the list for the first time, assessed as Endangered under Criterion B, based on the very small area of occupancy, the severe fragmentation and the ongoing continuing decline due to exploitation for the international aquarium trade.4

This is one of the very few fish that could actually become extinct because of the aquarium trade. So if you ever buy one, buy one bred in captivity. It would be a tragedy if this beautiful species disappeared while the actors from Twilight are still not extinct.

The most famous that I know of. The aquarium trade is usually tiny compared to deforestation, contamination, and so on. But in the case of this fish, it’s pretty much the aquarium trade’s fault and nothing else.

The thing I like is, going by the numbers alone, the Bucks didn’t play a bad game. And we still won by 14.

This WAS a quick game – I was home 30 minutes earlier than usual! Lauri, I sent Wayne two photos of George just for you. If he doesn’t post them, I will! George was Impact Player of the Game tonight, appearing in his tight, compression undershirt for the interview. You would have “swooned.”
