The turbine blades in a damn. Are they machined out of a giant block? Cast and machined? Or individually made and then assembled?

by Hipuks on Nov 23, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Depends on the size of the turbine, and the type. Hm, Google for images of each one, but basically:

  • Pelton turbines: Usually cast and machined, and each “spoon” is individually made and then assembled.
  • Francis turbines: Cast and machined, in a single block (usually).
  • Kaplan turbines: Cast and machined, each runner is individually made and assembled.

There are a lot more turbines, and many sizes (those are the three more common). Do you have any specific types in mind?

It’s incredible work. The shape is even today a valuable secret for each manufacturer. I’ll try to remember to send you some cool photos tomorrow from work. Some of the turbines have runners 4, 5 meters long.
