How good is George Hill? Is he really the best back up point guard in the league? or am I making too much of this?
I know he's not your average point guard. He's a scoring guard. He's probably not over playing the 2 in college, but even Tony is a scoring guard.
Is Hill better than the lakers second unit guards? Brown and Farmar? I dunno why I feel that way. Can someone explain?
Also, can anyone see Tony's assists and points in his second year here? Not averages, but the career highs.

Hill’s not quite there offensively, and I don’t ever expect him to be. Then again, he isn’t playing 34mpg like Tony did. Interestingly, Tony jacked up more 3PA’s that year than in any other. But Hill is doing better than Tony’s career highs in blocks, steals, and rebounds right now – his defense is what makes him special. Check the per 36 minutes averages(and cross reference Tony’s), remembering that deflections and harrassing your opponent into bad decisions don’t even show up in the boxscore.

As far as the Lakers go, Shannon Brown is probably the closest thing they have to a Hill-type player. I think George gets the edge over both Brown and Farmar, but the stats are fairly close with Brown.
Wow, that turned into a long comment.

You totally stole my thunder. I was creating a fanpost in reply to this.

What the heck. I still put it up.

Early Hill vs early Parker
This may get a few SA fans dander up, but Hill is well ahead of Parker at the same stage two year point of their careers. To start off, Hillk is a better defensive player, and in case you haven’t noticed has developed a pretty decent 3-point shot from the corner, ala Bruce Bowen. Tony is much better off the dribble right now, but that skill took about three years before it started to become what it is now. I don’t think Hill will ever be quite as quick in breaking down defenders, but he is no slouch. Expect him to be a better penetrator and passer off the drive as he gains confidence. Pop thinks the world of Hill and don’t be surprised to see him playing alongside Tony quite a bit this season. I remember last year Hill played defense on Kobe for a while and did a great job. Parker wants no part of Bryant. Parker and Hill are both great players with about five years experience separating them, but I can see Hill moving into Tony’s or Manu’s spot in about six or seven years. Pop’s problem may be keeping Hill motivated to remain a Spur when his contract runs out. I think he recently resigned and that is a good thing, but other teams will be eyeing him as his value becomes more apparent. SA is lucky to have two great point guards on the roster. When Hill subs for Parker now there is no falloff. I’m also looking forward to Pop placing the Fin and Bonner on the reserve list and bringing Hairson and Haislip up. We need to see Mahinmi in action too.
Oh, we’ll be seeing Mahinmi in action too … in Europe, or the NBADL.
We didn’t pick up his option.

I looked at it and I think Hill’s ahead of Parker at the same stage when in comes to scoring and defense, but not in passing. Still, you have to consider that Parker was a teenager when he first suited up for the Spurs… Does Hill have the potential that Parker had? Is his ceiling as high, or higher? We’ll see.
