Tim Varner put together a post about who should be the final five on the floor and the comments section goes crazy! I love George as much as anyone (except for Wayne), but to bench Tony for Hill is nuts. Also, take a gander at some of the trade suggestions.

Very interesting stuff. It’ll interesting to see how Pop handles all of these guys.

I’m wondering if SA is big enough to handle both Lebron and Timmy’s out of control egos – when we dump Finley, Bonner, Ian and Mase’s expring deals to Cleveland.

Man, the Tony fans really got up in arms over this one.
"How dare guys suggest Tony come off the bench in favor of Tony parker "
The top argument given by who those who find Tonys benching ludicrous is that he’s "A top five point guard".
I don’t see how benching tony necessarily means that George is thought of as in the same class as Parker. Is George Mason or Michael Finley APPROACHING the class that Manu Ginobili is in?
I don’t see why this should be thought of as such an insane suggestion when most other teams have an offensive punch coming off of the bench, rather than the luxury of a Swiss army knife like Ginobili.
Besides, Tony would still be seeing starter’s minutes and be on the floor for most of the crunch time minutes (sound like another all world talent on the Spurs?)
Clearly Manu is a better passer than Tony and would be better suited to distribute the Ball to Tim RJ and Hill.
Wouldn’t the following scenario encourage Tony? "Tony, the lanes will be open because Timmy and Dice are not going to be in the game. Drive to the hoop like a madman and occasionally dish the ball to the open man" …isn’t this what Tony already does? He may even be more productive off of the bench with the knowledge that the lane won’t be as clogged.
The belief that maybe Tony should come off the bench doesn’t make me less of a fan.
Last but not least, we all know that Pop would probably try bringing RJ off the bench before he did Tony, and who knows, that scenario may work very well.

I just thought it appropriate to reprint my post from the aformentioned 48MOH thread.

I agree. I’d like to see Hill and Manu start and TP be the super awesome 6th man. I’d like to see Dice come off the bench with him though. Blair, Bonner, and Ratliff can get situational starts next to Duncan.

Cap, my post was directed at those who responded to the 48MOH post. Also wanted to add that the suggestion of trading Tony is comical, at best.

Well, if you’re ahead and want to put out your top defensive unit to get a key stop, it’s not easy to justify Tony’s presence in the court.

I agree that Tony should be a situational player at the end of games depending on defensive needs, but I don’t think he should be benched from his starting position (should have made that more clear). Plus, I find it a little strange that so many people think we should trade Tony, even with the progress George has made. Next thing you know, they’ll be calling for us to trade Manu (don’t kill me, bella).

I dont think Tony should be traded but I also think that him coming of the bench is not a terrible idea. If Manu can do it, Tony should be able to do it as well if it is in the best interest of the team. Tony on the court with a bunch of 3pt shooters which can clear the lanes for him would be very efficient offense against most second units in the league. Whatever the case I think that even if Tony does not start, he should be playing thirty minutes per game.

If he keeps getting re-injured, he’ll be playing zero minutes per game.

But you can justify Manu being on the court versus Bogans? I mean lets call a spade a spade then

Well, it’s a balance of offense versus defense. If it were the final possession, their ball, and we didn’t need Manu to make a play, I’m not sure I could.

That doesn’t mean Manu is as bad on the defensive end as Tony, not even close.

he has never been a defensive problem when this team was winning titles. Why now ?

I don’t think he is a defensive problem now.
But I’m one of the few who actually like TP and his style of play.

CASE: Tony Coming Off The Bench Instead of Manu
I’m not saying he isn’t great and I don’t want him traded. I just think it could solve many of our rotation problems. I also think he would destroy opposing benches.
by BlaseE on Nov 20, 2009 4:07 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Tony’s most effective when surrounded by shooters. So having Bonner, Fin and Roger around him off the bench would be excellent. But, you would also need someone to clean up the glass and shore up the interior D. Which means that either Dice or Timmeh need to be paired with him at all times. Actually, I think Tony, Roger, Fin(or maybe RJ), Bonner, and Dice would be an absolutely devastating lineup on the offensive end. I just don’t know if they would prevnt enough points for the other side to keep us afloat.
