The LA Times' Laker Blog decided to get Wayne's take on the Spurs, and published his answers(along with their opinions - We're 4th in the West, apparently) today.

This is my favorite comment over there. I think you’ll know why.

Don’t worry about the Spurs. They’re old and washed up! Duncan can get liposuction and Ginobili can get hair plugs but it don’t make them any younger.

Hey dude. I am being forced to watch baseball games against my will. I grew up near L A and my brother is still an AVID Dodger fan. I for one refuse to follow Manny Ramirez and his fertility treatments.

I moved down toward where the Angels play years ago and everyone round here has Angels fever. But at least they beat the Red Sox last series and that’s always fun.

Oops. I was afraid someone might see that. But at least I didn’t post it on a Spurs blog. Just trying to crank up the (internal) hate but we don’t even play you guys until January so wtf.

Plus Bynum & Gasol are already hurt and were out the last couple of games. And we’ll probably lose our season opener to the Clips because we have the ceremony first and staying focused was never our strong suit. But at least the season is starting.

Hmm. I am a bit confused but I’m thinking you might be “just trying to crank up the hate” a bit. Fair enough (and a valiant effort). But “grima wormtongue-irific” is an awful lot of letters for my currently beer soaked brain.

I did enjoy reading your L A Times stuff but it didn’t make me no Spur lover.

OK, I waited until morning (when I was sober) and had some coffee but I’m still confused and thinking you’re just giving me back some shit – which is fine.

But assuming you’re serious, I’ve been reading but I haven’t really been posting much lately. But when I saw your stuff on the L A Times Blog I couldn’t resist sending a little “howdy” to my Ptr frenimies. Perhaps I could have gone classy with something like “Hey, I’ve read some of Wayne’s stuff and he does seem like an OK guy.” But I can’t imagine you’d give a shit either way about that. (Or how I had been treated well at Ptr over the summer.)

So I posted a quick blast about the Spurs. And perhaps I am not “defending” my comments about the Spurs strongly enough. But I can’t imagine you’d give a shit what I have to say about the Spurs either. (And yes good old alamobro, you caught me. Wow, I could never have guessed anyone from Ptr would see my comment on Wayne’s writeup about the Spurs – quite a surprise there!) All of which leads me back to you’re just giving me shit or I’m too stupid to figure it out – which is fine.

Dammit! I knew it. After all the stuff I’ve read (and even posted) round here I couldn’t imagine that comment would earn the “most pathetic. . .a-hole post”, with an added “vomit and poo excretion” reference. But you never know these days.

Very professional Wayne. Good stuff.

by SaSleepless on Oct 25, 2009 8:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

4th seed is not so bad. Me thinks we won the ship before even lower.

I’m goin out on a limb here. If I was a non-Spurs fan and put on my objective glasses.
I would place the Spurs after:
 1. Lakers – def champs + Artest
2. Nuggets – runner-ups last year
3. Mavs – Eliminated us and matched our upgrades.

Well, at least on paper. And don’t forget the dark horse Jazz.
My point is being, how competitive the West is and no one comes out as a run-away favorite.

MATCHED our upgrades??? You’ll be hard-pressed to find even pro sportwriters say that the Mavs matched. I have Mav fans coming up to me all offseason begrudgedly praising R.C. and saying how they wished they didn’t get leftovers (Gooden), and they did not eliminate the TRUE Spurs, just a watered down version. It is pretty much established in the league that the Spurs upgrades made them serious contenders, and I don’t hear anyone saying that about the Mavs. And the Nuggets actually lost some talent this offseason. Objectively, I do not see it.

by colom BILI ano on Oct 26, 2009 1:47 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I just quoted Dirk. I just can’t find the link. I’m being generous on the guy. Considering the Crystal Taylor episode, I’m not taking him as an authority.

And I said, it’s just on paper. For me, we don’t have that huge an advantage in talent.
We can’t be too cocky on the Mavs (I’m not saying you are). They have proven in the past how dangerous they are. But if even If just for the sake of argument that both teams are equal in talent, we still have the upper hand in veteran savvy. Plus, there’s that itch for payback. Bottomline, I may have too much respect for them.

About sport writers, most of them are spin doctors anyway.

About my views, I’m always the contrarian. You may not agree with some of my points but you can’t deny the competitive level right now is close. Still, glad to see your heart is in the right place.

by 'DSilverlining on Oct 26, 2009 2:40 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think its not incredibly inaccurate to say that both teams acquired similar talent. The Spurs certainly out-shopped the Mavs but not by much.

They got Marion, Gooden and Thomas which is a lesser version of Jefferson, McDyess and Youngevity.

Marion is a great third fiddle to a team like the Mavs and I think he is a good fit over there.

Of course we Blaired them like we did the rest of the league, but If we only count their veteran acquisitions we did not beat them by much.

Beaubois the rook is not that bad. He played toe to toe against Arenas. Certainly, he’s no Blair. Still, Mav still have some points of argument on the freshman dept. You clearly got the point I was trying to make.

Nice work Einstein. Part of being genius is moving to the others’ side and seeing his point of view. That way, one is made much richer in knowledge.

You are a rare find.

To be fair to A.K, he did say :However, I’m predicting any comparability in talent won’t be reflected by comparability in record, because, as Vore noted, “they won’t have to work Tim hard.”

So if we’re seeded low, it’s because we won’t work anyone hard and not because of lack of talent.

Hit the nail on the head. We always start slow and finish strong. Let Cavs, Lakers, Magic, Mavs get the best regualr season record. Then we give them the kamehame wave in the play-offs
