The Best Damn 2ND unit in the NBA
With the stimulus package coming in the form of RJ, Dice, Ratliff, Blair and Hairston, unquestionably we have one of the deepest bench. But I would like to argue that Spurs has the best Second unit in the league.
For the first team, Pop could go for this: 1. TP 2. Mason 3. RJ 4. TD 5. Dice
If so, second unit could be this: 1. Hill 2. Manu/Findog 3. Hairston/Blair 4. Blair/Bonner 5. Ratliff/Yawn
These guys can even beat some 1st teams out there. Pretty solid. Now, what monicker could fit them?
The posse? The cavalry?

I might agree, but
If so, second unit could be this: 1. Hill 2. Manu/Findog 3. Hairston/Blair 4. Blair/Bonner 5. Ratliff/Yawn
If Manu is on the 2nd unit, then there is no need for a “/Findog.”
This either implies that Manu or Finley could be on the 2nd unit (furhter implying that Manu would ever be a third string player behind Finley – no!), or that Finley’s availability somehow adds anything positive to your argument (it doesn’t).
In fact, just saying that we would have Manu, Hill and Blair coming off the bench would probably suffice in advancing your argument. Hairston, Bonner, Ratliff and Yanni are probably on par with many other teams’ bench players though.

Findogs clutch shooting is stil a huge asset to this team. If the spurs are to take a last second three, ten bucks says its Finleys number called ( second to only Mason).

Finley’s value to the Spurs as a situational bench player is not what I was getting at (although I would argue that he is not clutch and I cannot recall him actually making a last second three).
The post was about comparing the Spurs bench to the rest of the league. Finley is, generously, the 4th or 5th best player that will come off our bench this year.
Adding his name to our bench and saying that it makes the bench better (relative to other teams in the league) is, in my view, like adding a sprig of parsley on the side of a steak entree at Morton’s and saying that you improved the dish.
Although I hope you are right and he does prove to be useful clutch this year.

I have this condition...
where I can’t make new memories, but It’s not amnesia…
The shot I think you are talking about is the one against the Kings that was actually a half second late…but nonetheless, he did drill it and it was a great play.
I didn’t mean to be all “Debbie Downer” on Finley anyway, I just wouldn’t be opposed to his minutes decreasing this season.

We will have one of the best second units I believe. But how much better, its too soon to tell. In fact, I don’t know how Blair will cope with more physical centers, what Haislip actually does.

Here is the question that bugs me…I dunno where I read that Orlando’s second unit is the best in the league. Who else besides Gortat and Bass is worth mentioning over there? Am I missing anyone? who is their 2nd pg?
by SaSleepless on Oct 20, 2009 12:44 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Considering a starting lineup of Nelson, Carter, Barnes, Lewis and Howard (apparently that’s what Van gundy has in mind) their second unit would be:
-Anthony Johnson
-Redick
-Pietrus
-bass
-Gortat
-Ryan Anderson
-Jason Williams
So yeah, they have probably the best frontcourt rotation in the league (I use the term frontcourt only for centers and power forwards) and they have two nice players in Barnes and Pietrus at the 3 (with Carter or Lewis playing some minutes there maybe) but …..their backcourt depth is thin. Maybe Pietrus can play thos backup SG minutes behind Carter, but PG? They sure hope that NElson stays healthy, because this time around there’s no Rafer Alston to hold the fort (laugh all that you want, but Rafer is 10X better than Anthony Johnson)
So for a remainder:
1-Hill
2-Ginobili
3-Finley/Hairston
4-Blair
5-Bonner/Ratliff
In my opinion that’s a more balanced 2nd unit, its hard to find holes there (specially considering that Ian, Haislip, Bogans and Marcus are a hell of a luxury on street clothes.

Right now I think Ian is going to fell off the rotation. Its a shame, I would love to see him start alongside Duncan (even if that means that he would only play 15 minutes a game). The kid has upside and talent, but I dont see Popovich having 3 younglins on the rotation. We should be happy he gives minutes to Blair and Hill (yep, those backup SF minutes are going all to Finley’s way, stop dreaming abou hairston getting serious burn, its Gregg Popovich we are talking about)

jeez louise, you must’ve misunderstood me. I wasn’t shooting down your opinion, I actually kinda supported it. I’m just somewhat anal about not counting my chickens before they hatched or however the saying goes. I also almost always try to overestimate my opponent. For example, the day the spurs play the knicks, you’ll never hear me say (this is a blog, it’s kinda hard to hear) that we have the game before we played it. I guess you could say I respect my opponents. Gosh, poor me, I respect the knicks in a weird way.
So yeah, don’t take my comments as offensive or even seriously. My opinions are hardly ever concrete anyways.

Just to check:
Celtics: Rondo, Allen, Pierce, KG, Perkins
Bench:
1-House
2-Marquis Daniels
3-Tony Allen
4-Sheed
5-Big baby
The celtics have the best starting 5 of the league in my opinion, but their bench? Solid, but far from spectacular.
Lakers: Fisher, Kobe, Artest, Gasol, Bynum
1-Shannon Brown/Farmar
2-Vujacic
3-Walton
4-Lamar Odom
5-A bunch of crap
So Odom is a real luxuty to have off the bench, as he is a versatile forwards who can do it all. But the rest of the bunch looks pretty average to me. Their point guards continue to be their weak link.
So all in all I think the Spurs have the better bench. Not only our main guys off the bench are better, but our 10-15 players kick some serious ass.

Your analysis is good. I’d just like to mention that Shannon Brown is also sometimes given the 2 guard position and plays alongside Farmar (at least that’s been the case during pre-season). A bench backcourt of Farmar and Brown is much more potent than Farmar and Vujacic. Brown has been shooting the ball well from 3 and he already was a descent defender/slasher (haha). As far as Walton, I always thought that he is miraculously effective. Perhaps his greatest talent is his court awareness and knowledge of the triangle. Adam Morrison has also been shooting very well during the pre-season, so he might fight Vujacic for the shooting specialist position, or maybe even Walton for back-up SF. Now, this information I gathered when watching one Lakers preseason game (to observe the competition). I still agree with you, that I think our bench is better, but I just wanted to point out that they might not be as bad last year, and actually be a good bench.
I should be able to tell you about the Celtics pre-season game against the knicks tonight, since it was on in my room, but I instead chose to focus on the Spurs game that I couldn’t watch. I only watched parts of it but I don’t think the Celtics starters played much compared to the Knicks starters, but the Celtics bench managed to keep it close (I know it’s still the Knicks).

also, I forgot to mention that during the playoffs, it’s mostly about your best five players. The bench role is dramatically reduced to around the best 8 or 9 tops. And unless you’re a super-sub, you’re minutes will be cut unless a starter is in foul trouble. So while a good bench is important (and we have the best), The top five players of the Lakers, and Boston if we meet, will still be tough.
When the tooth fairy's own tooth falls out, it is taken during the night by Princess Peanut.
by the little o on Oct 21, 2009 4:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The bench is absolutely imperative in the play-offs. A good bench makes or breaks a team. You always need players to come in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter and keep up with the other team. This way, you will have a fresher starter in the 4th and deciding quarter.
I think we got killed in the 3rd quarter a lot because of that.
by SaSleepless on Oct 21, 2009 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
We’ve been done in last year so many times in the third quarter. But as the Thunder game suggest – it will not be our worries anymore with our back-ups.

I tend to agree with the notion that only 5 players can be on the court at a time, and in the playoffs the better 5 get all the minutes they can handle. That’s the reason I’d only mentioned the top 4 or 5 that come off the bench for each team. You know that come playoff time guys like Morrison wont get any meaningful minutes.
About Shannon Brown, I dont think he will play much alongside Farmar. Clearly the Lakers formula is to use Kobe as much as they can (like 40 minutes on the playoffs) with Sasha getting all the backup SG minutes. Maybe Brown is the most exctiing player, but he is too short to guard SG’s. Besides he has shown a great ability to defend oposing PG’s.

Blair will see to that no doubt.
Blazers do have a nice bench. a few questions. what’s the deal with your point guard situation? Is Blake really starting? Did they really just spent so much money for a back-up poing guard? Also, what does this mean with Bayless’ minutes? I figured this would be the year he gets a couple of minutes. Do you see a jump in minutes by fernandez? He said he wanted a bigger role, but this team has too many good players, specially wings. Outlaw, Webster, Batum, Roy, Fernandez, and I’d classify Bayless as more of a two also. Finally, who had the better pre-season, Pryzbilla or Oden?
Personally, I don’t think the Blazers should’ve signed Miller this season. I would’ve given them at least on more season of internal improvement. They’re just not ready yet, and signing miller puts more pressure on them to win now. But… I’m not a Blazer fan, so my knowledge is limited, what’s your take?

Bayless can score but not ready to run a team.
