Poll: Hairston/Williams/Bogans
This quick poll was inspired by this article shared by Tim C. earlier today. The Keith Bogans signing on September 23rd will most likely come down to a choice between Malik Hairston or Marcus Williams for the final roster spot. Hairston suited up for 15 games with the Spurs last season, Williams for only 2. If it were up to you, who gets it? Malik or Marcus? Or should we waive Keith? Your thoughts, please.
Update: Spurs Waive Marcus Williams

I think we should waive Bogans, but I doubt that will happen. If we sign Hairston, who has played the best out of the three, and keep Bogans, it will be kinda redundant since we’ll expect the same from both of them (perimeter defense off the bench). Bogans is also shooting terribly throughout the preseason but guaranteed money and experience will make the front office keep him. Williams hasn’t played well either, so he’ll be the odd man out. =/ I voted for waive Bogans though.

Hairston has long arms like Hill and Blair, so he could be valuable guarding SF’s. Bogans is pretty much limited to SG, though. Bogans has been guarding NBA stars for a while, though… that experience, in this case, is not overrated. Williams hasn’t really shown me much of anything though.

He hasn’t showed me much of anything either — but that’s mostly b/c THE GAMES HAVEN’T BEEN AVAILABLE TO WATCH ON TV.
I agree that Bogans’ experience isn’t overrated, but that didn’t keep me from voting to waive him, although I seriously doubt that’ll happen.

Then our plan is simple JRW, we must first convince WVATS to change this blog into a vip’s wine tasting blog (I suggest we change the blog name to “Squishing the Grapes”. This will attract coach Pop and he’ll join immediately. We’ll then have to win his admiration and loyalty in a matter of a few days, and finally instruct him to waive Bogans. Simple huh?

This point is moot. Marcus Williams is gone…

I dont mean to jump the gun, its just very hard to see pop selecting an inexperienced kid like Marcus who hasnt proved half as much as Malik Hairston, over a vet like Bogans…

We need to keep Bogan’s at least until midseason to really know if his defense can sorta approximate Bruce’s D. Or if a combo of him and RJ can come close without the offense suffering too much. Nobody knows that yet.
Williams : I really hope Pop gives him the 15th spot. We all agree the guy has earned it. I think he can be key even in the post season. If he makes it on the roster.
Who gets the 15th spot?
Hairston for sure. Pop tested him quite a bit in the preseason games and he has responded well. He’s a fairly good defender, but he can’t even slow down Kobe. That’s why Bogans was signed. With Bowen gone Bryant would run rampant over the SPURS. On film Bogans did a credible job guarding Kobe…at least better than most. So now we have two people to throw at the Lakers best player and if Haislip picks up his “D” skills, maybe even a third. But Haislip is going to be used a lot against Dallas’s Dirk. In the past even Bowen couldn’t get high enough to bother Nowitski when he shot his pull up fade away. Haislip is 6’10" and leaps out of the gym. He’s fairly quick and fits the bill for guarding the Dallas number one scorer. Believe me when I say Popovich knows what he is doing when, with the help of R.C., he adds players to a roster. Bogan is for Kobe and Haislip is for Dirk. Those two players will help guard two of the western all-stars who have been the biggest thorn in our sides in recent years. Hairston is a defense first type player and Haislip showed well on defense playing in Europe. That’s why Williams will be the odd man out, and Hairston gets to stay. Of course the possibility of carrying onlly 14 players remains a possibility. Remember its all about d-e-f-e-n-s-e in Pop’s book.
I dont buy that the spurs "need someone who can slow down Bryant "
In part, because such a player doesnt exist. ( If you want to Argue Battier or Artest, fine, but even those guys have no hope of slowing Bryant and one of them plays with Los Angeles.)
The Celtics casually handed Los Angeles theyre ass in the finals, with nary a player who could slow Kobe down one-on-one.
The Nuggets (I cant believe im saying that either) went almost seven games against the Lakers with no one who could “slow Kobe down”.
The Magic came within a few plays of being up in the finals 3 games to 1 , with no one who could “slow Kobe down”.
Im sorry if im going all " A i " here , its just that im getting tired of hearing people say we need someone who can “slow Kobe down”

agreed. If we all wonder sometimes whether Dejuan will ever truly break an arm throughout his career, imagine how easy it will be for Blair to break a couple of dominant fingers from kobe’s shooting hand.
alamobro, totally agree. Team defense is the key.

To be honest, I don’t want that to happen on poor little kobe. I want the Fakers in their full strength so he will suffer more from being ousted in the Western Finals.
Victory is sweeter that way.
But d Suns might beat us to it. my dark horse faves (Mavs-Warriors II)

Hairston should get it!
Williams has a good upside over Bogans.
But I like the Spurs to Bogans for a while he’s a veteran so a few games in the season won’t hurt. If it doesn’t pan out the Spurs can waive or Trade hime before the February deadline.
I hope Williams sticks with the Spurs in one way or another. Maybe an arrangement to play overseas could be done? Like just what we did with James GIST.
