Spurs Waive Dwayne Jones
One down, two to go. The Spurs waived C Dwayne Jones today. They have two more roster cuts to make before the season starts.
I'm a little curious about the timing on this. He was with the Toros last year and I expected he would be with them again this year. Cutting him two weeks before it is necessary makes me think he may have some interest in him by another team, maybe in Europe.

A little more playing time for Blair, Mahinmi and Haislip in the preseason frontcourt rotation now? Maybe we can cut Jerrells before tomorrow’s game too.
Works for me. I don’t want a PG who can’t pass the ball worth a damn (even if he is 3 deep on the chart).

Maybe they’ll start assimilating their older front court guys now. How many more preseason games are left?

2 words..... Keep Jerrells!......
Why have a PG project when you can have a PG? 4 minutes 9 points… Draws the 5 point play…KEEPER

You said “2” and you meant it.

I think in Tony’s interview yesterday or coupla days ago, he said Pop is going to be making cuts early this time, possibly one before the next game.
I am just eager to know his decision on Hairston. Ian and Williams both won’t match Hairston’s all around potential in games this season I think. That’s without seeing any of them play lol. So its prob not a smart conclusion.
Hope Haiston makes the final cut...
I think Ian has a guaranteed contract for this season, so he’s already on the Spurs roster, the question is will the Spurs pick up his option and give him an extension? He’s show some encouraging results in his past two games and he’s potential is up there.. So we’ll see…

Unless he gets hurt again, the Spurs would be crazy not to pick up Ian’s option. And…
I know this won’t be the most popular opinion, but I think the Spurs need to give Ian some time playing next to TD, maybe even start him when Dice isn’t playing. He’s shown an incredible ability to block and alter shots(think of him as a younger, faster, more athletic Ratliff), and combining his ability with Timmeh’s could make the Spurs interior defense incredibly intimidating. We don’t need him to score a lot if he’s doing his thing on the defensive end. More playing time, especially with TD, could really help him cut down on the fouling.

But if he isn’t much of a scoring threat, then oppenents will just double Duncan with Ian’s man. He’ll be a Matt Bonner who doesn’t defend. And who can’t hit threes. Okay, so he won’t be a Matt Bonner. But still. I think it’s the brilliance of Dyess’ midrange game that makes him an excellent fit to play alongside Duncan.
You can argue for Ian as THE big off the bench—playing with Blair—but DeJuan will have to carry the post scoring for the reserves, if so. Bonner, bless his soul, can’t do shit in the post even if he just ate a can of beans and a bottle of laxatives, but he at least forces a big away from the basket. I hope he develops an arsenal of post moves and learns to knock down the 15 footer, but at this point, I’d play Bonner sooner than Ian. And that’s saying a lot.

I’m not saying he isn’t a scoring threat. But with TD in the game, he doesn’t need to be. If Ian’s man goes to double Duncan, Ian is quick enough and athletic enough to make them pay on a pass from Timmeh before they can recover. Anyway, I’m anxious to see it in preseason before I say anymore. Perhaps he and Blair will render Ratliff useless as a dominating second unit, but I really want to see what Ian(and Blair, for that matter) can do playing alongside TD.

Fair enough. I hope Pop does play him alongside TD. Let’s see.

I’d personally like to see a bench unit front court combo of Bonner and Blair, so that Blair can be able to eat the entire space inside of the 3 point arc without worrying about crushing a limb that belongs to a teammate. When he’s surrounded by 4 shooters, things like this could happen. Call me crazy but I think Blair is quick enough, and strong enough to get a decent percentage shot against an average NBA big. This would never happen though, for defensive purposes.

That’s what I was saying. I like the Bonner and Blair combo as reserves, with Duncan and McDyess as starters. Where that puts Ian, I do not know. hopefully we’ll see more of what role Ian can play in this team.

With Dwayne Jones cut, maybe he’ll get some run at backup poing guard.

Maybe he’ll do a between the legs, wrap around, 720 degree dribble that would put olf Pau Gasol to shame.

Maybe he won’t. But will instead stay healthy for a whole season.

malik
i would love to have malik. well m.williams is first of all a better playing with the toros cuz its the dleague and his the star.while malik plays wellbothe with the toros and the nba with little amount of time, plus is a more defensive minded guy.with this past 2 preseason games he gets a block or 2 and a steal or two plus 6-10 points and so i guess off the bench his going to be great.
