Yawn Manhimi: Out for the Season

According to www.48minutesofhell.com, Ian is electing to have surgery to repair his sprained ankle that will not heal.  So, where do we go from here?  Do we try and find another big or do we get ANOTHER 3 point shooter?

/sigh, so much bad luck the past 3 seasons or so. No Scola, no Tiago, no Yawn to help Timmy and Pop win a 5th ring.  It hurts to think how deep we'd be if we had Scola and Tiago with us

Double facepalm

Mr. Manhimi will never be a consistent contributor in the NBA. Oh well, at least he’s still tall.

bren needs to see this so he can stop asking about Ian all the time.

Fortunately this will make the FO hurry to aquire another big

Whats French for what the F_ _ K?

What kind of ankle sprain requires surgery?

Can we stop it with the overseas drafting already? It was cute, it worked a bit, but its been a failed philosophy since Manu got here six years ago.

Mahinmi, Splitter, Javtokas, Karaulov….all bigs, all could help right, none are here….instead we waste late 1st and 2nd rd picks on these guys who will never be here, with the thought that “oh its ok, we dont need them now, we can leave them there”….well we do need them now, and thats how we’ve ended up the oldest team in the league.

I hope they dont continue this trend, waste a second rounder on an upper classman who, may or may not contribute, but would at least set foot on American soil.

So what happens to Mahinmi now? Does this count as a year in his deal?

This is complete bullshit

I’ve never seen so much faith put into some dude who has yet to accomplish anything remarkable in any legit level of basketball. He dominated the D-League and thats it. So did Desmon Farmer and James White and they’re not even in the league.

Spurs dropped the ball on Luis Scola and the fans will always be ticked on that. To the point where they overrate him way too much. I think Splitter will get here eventually.

by r21x on Jan 26, 2009 2:53 PM CST reply actions

I dont know that its faith, its his potential

I dont think that anyone was counting on him to be a key part, except me….its just his athleticism and body alone could help a great deal, and one would expect a year of NBA ball and playing with Timmy would rub off….so its a loss in the sense that he couldve contributed at some level and the lost year of experience doesnt help either

I dont think Splitter will be here, he signed a 2 year deal and the Spurs arent likely to buy him out of it, not to mention he’ll make substantially less here than he would in Spain

by bren on Jan 26, 2009 4:20 PM CST up reply actions

If we don’t ever bring him over do we just lose him and it turns into a wasted pick? Because they already screwed up with Scola by trading his rights and then watching another team easily bring him over. Spurs should be smarter about it this time.

by r21x on Jan 26, 2009 11:26 PM CST up reply actions

well if they dont bring him over and dont trade him

He has no choice but to play for the Spurs if he ever wants to play in the NBA b/c they would retain his rights unless he’s traded

There can now be no acceptable explanation for not vigorously courting Joe Smith. Veteran leadership, high basketball IQ, a frontcourt player with the ability to guard shooting bigs, not a “character-risk” player, the ability to rebound, a desire to play for a contender, salary of only $4.8 through this year, current team looking at a buy-out, a viable offensive option over six and a half feet tall not named Timmy……. the list continues. We gotta make this happen.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 26, 2009 5:25 PM CST reply actions

What would you give up, in terms of draft picks, to get him?

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jan 26, 2009 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

Number 1- Explain to me why we’d need to give up draft picks to get him when the Thunder are looking at buying out his contract this year.

Number 2- I’d be willing to give up a 2nd rounder for sure, and possibly even a first (regardless of the fact that we’ve mortgaged away several of our upcoming picks) . You know I’m on the side of the fence (and even more so at this point) that says, “We’re only gonna have the Big 3 for another couple of years; we need to be focused on winning now.” We need to be completely focused on maximizing Timmy’s career today and not stockpiling for years down the road. If we need a viable big to compliment TD&Crew today and push us over the top, THAT needs to be the priority sought after at any cost. It’s damn sure the priority of the other NBA powers. I live in fear of looking back five years from now and realizing that we could have had more chips if not so focused on perpetuating stability. Said it before, but I’d rather win the next two years and suck for the next 5, than be just “good” for the next 7.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 26, 2009 6:10 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with Sima. Lets sell our souls Heat-like to get championships NOW. Fuck the future. If the mayans are right, 2012 will be the last year of humanity.
Besides, when you get into rebuilding mode, stockpiling assets doesnt help SHIT to get out of the basement. Luck is the first step to get out of the lottery. A lot of teams stockpile picks and young projects for years and years. That never works. Usually a 1st pick or high pick and some lucky trades and players turning into stars out of nowhere (TP and Manu anyone?) is what makes a team a contender. Look at Miami, they sold their souls in 2006, they were supposed to suck for years to come. 2008 came and they already are in the playoffs.
Lets get Joe. NOW, the sooner the better.

Ironic Timmeh’s contract is up in 2012, and Pop is said to leave when Timmy leaves. Coincidence? I think not.

In conclusion, the mayan prophecy is true. A small excerpt, if you will, “The Fundamental One and The Bearded One will bring about the end of the world”. Something of that sort, I need to brush up on my Mayan

this is an interesing connection between 2012, timmy/pop and the mayans. i had never put all that together before, but now it makes so much sense.

i’m with chilai’s comment about this revelation spurring the FO into action. however, i’m not sure how much of a loss this really is for SA because he hadn’t played at all and the prospects of such weren’t too high.

i have been throwing out the name of charlie villaneuva for the last couple of weeks. he has offensive skills and a big, athletic body that could fit in quickly for what the spurs need. he might be worth a good draft pick. i cant remember his exact contract status, but i can remember ATS looking it up and telling me that he could be had. CV is a 14+ points/6 rebound a game guy. he’s also 6-10 for real – as opposed to the matt bonner 6-10, which is really about 6-7 – anyone catch him coming up to lamar odom’s shoulders on sunday? but i digress……..

anyone know if the spurs still have any of the “rights to” any of our overseas players, like splitter for instance? could something like that be used to sweeten the trade pot?

by bones on Jan 27, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions

The Bucks are not trading Villanueva. At least not for a bunch of non scorers and picks. With Redd out for the season they are severely shorthanded offensively. LAst night they played their two point guards together (none of them taller than parker). Villanueva is their second leading scorer. Not gonna happen.
On the Bonner height, he is probably 6’9. The thing is…. his arms are crocodile/T-rex like.
And about the rights, yes we have the rights to all of those overseas players, like javtokas, but except for Tiago they are all pure crap.

I dunno, Javtokas looked like he could play in the Olympics. Tough guy, good rebounder…he’s certainly capable of giving you Jeff Foster type production.

see i’m thinking that the bucks might just go ahead and pack it in for the year given the redd injury. he might be out even longer that that since two of his three major ligs are torn. they could begin the re-stocking process with a draft pick or two and a couple of expiring contracts……..

by bones on Jan 27, 2009 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

I forgot Skiles is their coach. He loves gritty hard nosed players (specially if they dont have any sort of talent). We have a couple of those guys. the JV, Oberto and Udoka scream Skiles

I was gonna argue against this...

but according to this , hes averaging 8.2 rebounds/36 minutes….which was surprising.

But id wait until he’s bought out, no way in hell you give up a first round draft pick for Joe Smith, especially when Bowen, Finley, Thomas and Oberto have to be replaced in the very near future and we have no overseas options that appear imminent

Until Manu has 5 good, not even great, games in a row I will refer to Tim, Tony and Manu as the big 2 and a half.

This sucks but hopefully Chilai is right about the front office having some urgency to sure up the front court. Joe Smith is an upgrade but he won’t push us over the top. He’s barely better than KT. Perhaps we can rob a bad franchise of a vet who wants to win now for a bunch of 1st rounders and expiring contracts. Nothing even comes to mind though. The images of Bynum bullying Tim around yesterday is still burned into the back of my mind, and it hurts.

by speedostuffer on Jan 26, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions

this is what i’m saying…….the part about robbing a bad franchise….NOT the part about manu being half of a man.

by bones on Jan 27, 2009 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

he’s hardly ever had five good games in a row even when healthy and in his prime, sot that’s asking a lot. He simply doesn’t bring it when he doesn’t have to against crappy East teams that Tony is all too willing to light up anyway.

I’d settle for five games in a row where ST doesn’t clamor for him to be traded.

by Aaronstampler on Jan 27, 2009 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

feck. Well, now there’s no question in my mind: We must make a trade for a stronger 3 or 4, or tank this year for the draft. The big 3 aren’t enough anymore.

by Tim C. on Jan 26, 2009 9:18 PM CST reply actions

Who would you suggest?

Marion figures to be available, so does J. O’neal, Iverson…..Im afraid we’re stuck with what we’ve got, so we just have to hope they stay healthy and Hill and Mason continue to progress

Stilll we have an asset

Dont give up on Manu. Last year a lot of people thought he was done and he delivered by far his best season. Manu playing like Manu could be a big difference maker in the playoffs. He has that ability to surprise people, even their fans. I can see a scenario where Manu averages 15pts on 40% with 4 turnovers in the playoffs and another one where he averages 20+ points killing it from 3 land and showing his all around game.
For the sake of god, dont tease us Manu with something in between those two possibliites.

BTW I dreamed this evening that the Spurs just traded Manu. I spent the rest of the dream being super estranged and confused.

How credible is your source. If this injury did happen it does effect his time till he is ready for the Spurs. Will he live up to the hype I dont think so but could still be a solid starter or good backup.

Yeah, there was no word of this on spurs.com
