The Illusion Crushing Thread.
We all have ideas of what other PTR members look like. For me those ideas depend on people's avatar, so ATS looks like a grumpy but wise old Pop to me, SiMA like a smartass smirking Manu, and SinCitySpur like a sex crazed Quagmire. Maybe you all have your own ideas, thinking all the girls are hot, or all the guys handsome.
Well, it's time to destroy some illusions. Let's put some pics of what we really look like and don't worry, no matter how we look on the outside, we're all ugly on the inside:

Alright, so I’ll start.
Here’s your truly, Hipuks, or more accurately, Gonzalo.
My half face looks awesome, if my whole face looked as good, I would have had a ton of chicks before I met my girl who I’m totally loyal to.

This is my pathetic attempt at a playoff beard last year. I had known my girl for about a month when I took this pic and sent it to her. I think it really captures my essence.

I have to say, Hipuks, you look exactly like I imagined you would. I used to play basketball at work (during our lunch hour) with a guy from Argentina who could have been your twin brother.
Consider this illusion not crushed at all. Solidified, even.

ok – i cant view the SiMA photos. perhaps i should not be surprised by this. is it just me, or have they vanished? is it:
a) as suspected, SiMA is some kind of vampire that cannot be properly photoged
b) he is wanted by authorities in several states and had to pull the photos
c) in the witness protection program

Btw, in my picture, the scar over my left eye is my bonfire scar. I got it on bonfire night. Running down the hall in the dorm, my roommate pushed me as I was turning into a room and split my noggin wide open just above the eye. Good times.

that pic was from our field work expedition to 80° North (latitude) and the rifle was for protection against polar bears (that’s no joke!!! the Norwegian Authorities take it very seriously if they think we have done something to those endangered species)

Completely badass. How often did you guys have problems with polar bears? I gotta hear about this….
by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 26, 2009 4:25 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
In April, there is still some sea ice so the Polar Bears are still hanging out on the sea to catch seals but as it winds down to May, that when one has got to be careful coz the polar bears start moving onto land and in looking for food could stray on to camp sites. There is of course a wired fence setup for alerting us against polar bears but half the time there could be false alarms because of the wind and snow drift. Luckily on our trip though, we hadnt had to deal with them at our camps but we did see them from a distance and what we usually do is try to scare them off by turning on the snowmobiles and chase them away. The first pic i posted was inland and we didnt fortunately come across any bears but when we moved back to the main station near the sea thats when we saw the polar bear along with her pup.
This one below is when we first saw the Polar Bear and her pup:

The pup trying to in lockstep with her mom:

Here, we try to scare them off and chase them away using our snowmobile:

he’s chasing polar bears away and all we could counter with is:
“In the first pic, you see the camaro that took the parking spot I was going to pull into. The 2nd pic shows the guy as he was getting out — notice the matching mullets of him and his girlfriend. I didn’t get a 3rd pic, b/c he saw me and we had to drive away really quick before he called his friends. He doesn’t look too tough, but you never know — he might have had tough friends. So … we decided to go to a different mall.”

It is impossible to quantify the badassedness of those stories, spurred. Kudos to you. I’m filing a picture of you under “Man” on Wikipedia.
I’ve heard stories about people hunting polars and always wanted to try it (being a hunter and all), but it sounds like it would be difficult. Far more difficult than grizzlies, which some areas practically beg you to hunt. Can you even do that anymore? Is it mostly regional, or was it never even a viable option?
by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 29, 2009 4:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I work in a glaciology group and am not a hunter:) That shot gun was strictly for self defense against Polar Bears and since the bears are protected under law we have to have a very convincing reason if we had to shoot them. We were told to shoot at them only if we suddenly encounter them and they are approx no more than 10 meters away from us but otherwise if we see them approaching us then we could start some kind of motor engine that makes a loud noise or could also fire the gun in the air or fire a banger which produces light and sound to frighten them away. So, i dont think hunting them is an option at all (atleast legally) in most places. I dont know if there are exceptions.
The problem with polar bears in some remote locations is that there could be some who have never encountered a human before and so are more curious to get near us and with the sounds we make to frighten them they still try to figure out whats going on by just staying where they are until we finally convince them with more noise to get away from us but the bears which have encountered humans before are wise and usually stay away without much effort from us.
And just for measure a pic of the footprints of the mom and pup:

You know what’s funny about the “chick magnet” comment is he really does seem to flirt with cute girls and women. Like we’ll be walking in the mall or someplace, and a cute girl walks by, and he gives her this “look at me, I’m so adorable, don’t you want to hug me” look, and 9 times out of 10 the girl will smile at him and wave or wink. He doesn’t try to make eyes at less attractive girls or at guys.

I got the idea from fish forums. Though usually there, it’s the girls who put their pics first, and guys are more reluctant to. It could be because most are old guys an maybe the only bright thing in their life is flirting with someone online.
Anyway, I’m really glad it took off, I was worried I was gonna be the only one putting my dumbass face on the thread and the rest were gonna be…um…no way.

I really hate that first quote. It was in one of those bullshit inspirational posters in a class that had a teacher I also hated. The whole time I had that class I was just waiting for her to mention the poster so I could tell her how shitty it was, but she never did.
What I really have a problem with is the the first part. It sounds very 1984-ish, very absolute dictatorship. I think a person should be able to think whatever they want not matter how noble or vile it is. I say, don’t ever watch your thoughts, let your thoughts run free. No matter how repressive a government or society might be, the mind is the last refuge we have, a truly free realm where no one but ourselves know of its contents.
Yes, following my advice you might get an Einsten just as you could get a Ted Bundy, but that’s the way freedom works. You can’t stifle creativity in the name of acceptability.

You go kayaking? That’s fucking awesome. Only lakes or whitewater too? We go to this one place called Kern River, during the summer it’s pretty low and tame, but when the ice melts some parts are category 5 rapids.
Since I don’t have a kayak or know how to kayak, I go down in one of those inflatable tubes, a trip downriver of about two and a half miles, it’s pretty cool.
One year me and my uncle decided to go down the river in an inflatable boat, during the season where the river it’s at its biggest, and let’s just say…we underestimated the river badly…First rapids I saw I was like, holy shit this is way bigger than when we’ve been here before. We got stuck on a underwater branch that punctured the boat and had to bail out, which of course meant my uncle floated safely to shore while I got trapped in a damn eddy that kept pushing me underwater. Finally it let me go, and I swam to shore, scared shitless. So yeah, you can say that taught me to respect the river a lot more.

Mostly just whitewater. Actually I seldom go on lakes, only when I want to simultaneously fish (sorry, bro). Some Colorado lakes are fun because of the altitude and scenery but once you’ve hit whitewater, lakes are pretty weak. I’ll have to post some river pics or video this summer; they’re far more exciting. Around here we typically hit the Arkansas, South Platte, and Colorado. I’ve actually kayaked the Lower Kern though, it’s badass. You gotta catch it during a good runoff season and avoid the crowds (I remember it getting absolutely packed there), but it’s awesome. Definitely have to scout the rivers with kayaking, you can get into lots of trouble not knowing what you’re getting into. I’ve had several friends severely hurt that way. And you have to get away from inflatable shit; sell a goldfish and buy a real kayak. It’s something you’d enjoy and get into. TWSS.

That TWSS was weak, SiMA….
The kayaking, though, seems pretty cool. Not nearly the thrill surfing is, but at least it’s in the same family. If you weren’t such a chauvinistic pig I’d actually think you were kinda cool right now…Well, that, and if you weren’t wearing a “frontie” in your pic. Looks kinda like a mini life jacket to me, and that water seems too calm for life jackets, unless you’re a weak-ass Nancy swimmer.

That picture turned out huge. Did not mean for it to be that big. Still trying to figure out the technology of the intertubes. My bad.

She can drop dimes, man. And you will love this, Chilai. She likes hoops and the Spurs, but she loves watching (and playing) soccer.

We enjoy it very much. Good instructional league and a solid place to learn fundamentals without the pressure of winning and league standings.
BTW, your daughter is adorable. Hard to say on the ‘nets without sounding creepy, but she’s a really cute baby. Seems like yesterday mine was that small….

Hamer, you’re awesome. You’ve got the Ginobili jersey, cap on backwards thing working as well as anyone I’ve known. I’m not being sarcastic — I mean all of this. But…
I’m afraid I’m going to have to point something out, and I don’t want to be pedantic about this, but facts are facts. So, here goes.
If PtR is a community that roots for the Spurs while giving each other a hard time in a good-natured way, then there are certain standards that MUST be maintained. If we’re going to bust on LatinD for misspelling “outstanding”, if we’re going to take it so far as to use his misspelling ourselves and elevate it into it’s own compliment in LD’s honor, to the point where it goes beyond making fun and becomes something all its own; if we’re going to do all that, then it’s imperative that we spell it correctly.
It’s OTSTANDING
We can take a break from spelling and grammar most of the time, but there are certain words that only work if we’re careful about how we type them.
I hope you take this in the manner it’s intended. Not as a stupid post to make fun of you, but as a way that we can make sure that PtR is all that it can be.
I think LatinD would have wanted it that way. *sniff sniff *

Yeah, don’t go misspelling my horrendous typo, please. Jeez.
Loved the kiddo.

It wasn’t a “horrendous typo”, all you did was leave out the “u” — no need to get all dramatic about it, LD. Jeez!
Now, “embarrassing typo”? Maybe, but not horrendous.

Just what I'm sure you were all waiting for...
So the vacations are sadly over, and it’s time to find some pics to share. Way to the bottom of the post where no one will ever see them, and after all you bastards have shows your handsome, rugged faces and won the female vote with your cuteass (wrong?) kids and your mighty kayaks. Meh.

Heeey, ladies, he’s gone to Europe! He’s sophisticated and rich!

Cute kids? Bah, eatcher hearts out, losers! Show ‘em how it’s done, Conan!

Back when I was dating TERMINATOR.

OMG! Is he hurt?? Don’t worry, girls, it’s just a simulacrum for the Red Cross.

Something for da ladies. Behind that hat? Butt NEKIDD.

Neither. That was a couple of years ago… I realized today that I don’t have any good photos from 2008 – well, there are a few in the camera, but that involved downloading them to the HDD, uploading them to ImageShack, and then putting them here.

perhaps i should shave my head and get a post graduate degree from A&M?
by bones on Feb 4, 2009 9:14 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That’d be completely unnecessary. The guys with hair who graduated from other universities can start our own little clique on PtR. And we’ll be cool. And everyone will talk about how witty we are, and our full heads of hair will be a topic of discussion until the playoffs. And no one will have to know that my scalp is proving its love for Manu by mirroring his bald spot.
At least my nose is somewhat smaller than his.
