Game Thread #33: vs Sixers

Philadelphia 76ers at San Antonio Spurs, Jan 3, 2009 7:30 PM CST

It's been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.

Yeah, it's good to be back.

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - When you see Tony posing without his shirt, can you think of anything BUT the Lemon Song?  Did you guys know that this is Andre Miller's 10th year in the league?  He, just like the song, is very solid but doesn't really go anywhere.
  • Off Guard -"For you to me are the only one".  The most beautiful song I always wanted to dedicate to a woman and never could.  So Manu gets it instead.  Tangerine is a song that you only remember for its name.  Much like Willie Greene.
  • Center -The best there ever was.  Zep at its absolute peak.  Dazed and Confused came out in '68.  The guitar is off the charts and the majesty of it will never be matched.  Remind you of anybody?  Dalembert is from Haiti by way of Canada and brings a good, yet creepy, energy.
  • Power Forward - Bonner is absolutely the Fool.  Thaddeus Young is having a break out year and is enjoying some time in the lime light.  Let's see how he likes a little time in Bowen's light.
  • Small Forward -Hey hey what can we do?  He's our small forward, want a ball all day.  He's our small forward, I stay drunk all  the time.  Iguodala is every bit of Hot Dog.  Kind of fun and out of place, but just an imitation of the real thing.
  • Bench - Your Time Is Gonna Come vs What Is And What Should Never Be
  • Coach - Pop is Stairway To Heaven.  A classic that is so overplayed you take it for granted.  Their coach is like the entire album of Coda.  I don't know anything about it and don't care.
  • Mojo - Commnucinations breakdown.  It's always the same.  Having a nervous breakdown.  It drives you insane.  That's our season fellas.  Learn to love it.
  • Winner - We'll Ramble On
  • Shout Out To the Aussies - Zebra by John Butler Trio came on while I was finishing this up and made me think of you guys.  Butler is fantastic and I love his stuff.  The last lyric of the song is off the charts for me and I have a feeling it would really hit home for my boy Hipuks:  "I could bring love back into my life.  Share it with the world if I got some balance."

Keys To The Game

  • Bench - Last night was a rare NBA night where all 30 teams played.  That means we are both on the segababa.  We'll need quality from our bench tonight.
  • Their Perimeter Shooting -They shoot an otstandingly bad 29.1% from 3-pt.
  • Our New Year Attitude - We need to start playing better or we'll get crushed by our schedule.  Tony and Manu need to step up the quality of their games.

Some other reading

Liberty Baller has a cool feature called Wednesday GM where he proposes various trades.  The Sixers season is going so poorly that I read this line on the blog:

The Sixers looked somewhat decent in the 2nd half of the Clippers game

Other things of possible interest

Recap: Aack.  I forgot to post the January recap thread.  Who wants to volunteer?

Hey ya’ll! I’m a first-time poster, but I’ve been reading for a few months now. You guys are all so fun/funny, and I hope you won’t mind a girl hanging out with you every once-in-awhile. I’m starved for fellow Spurs fans, stuck at stuffy Harvard with a bunch of Celtics lovers. Ugh.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi.

Go Spurs Go!

Man, a girl huh? I don’t know about this.

Have you been out to Watch City Brewery? I think that is the name of the place. Great beer.

It’s great to have a girl in the house – and an Ivy Leaguer at that!

But I’m at work tonight so I figured, why not? All the Aussie’s do it… so I should, too.

Yeah, about 6-7 years ago I traveled up to Waltham for work on a fairly regular basis. We hit Watch City a couple times for growlers to go and some food.

Just outta curiosity, where are you from originally. I’m a military brat, so I’ve been quite a few places…… Great to have a girl on here—I’ve been trying to convert my sisters, but it’s a chore lol.

Also, congrats on being @ Harvard. Visited the campus up there and almost ended up applying, but I’m a wimp when it comes to cold weather and I made the decision/mistake to become an air force cadet so I wound up at Texas A&M. Anyway, welcome!

I am from everywhere too—not a military brat, but my dad worked in the technology industry, and they never let us stay in one place for more than 4 years. I was born in North Carolina, then moved all over the place, from SoCal to Texas to New York.

Keep working on your sisters, they’ll come around! They’re crazy if they don’t. Actually, my two older brothers are the reason I became a fan. Their obsession with the Spurs finally won me over. :)

Cyphotilapia Frontosa “Zaire Purple”. This is a striking Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika in Africa. They grow up to 12 inches and from what I’ve read they’re pretty smart and can be hand fed. They’re deep water fish, so when they bring them up, they have to do so in stages, otherwise they get the bends, just like divers. They’re piscivores, feeding at night on helpless little bastards. Pretty cool fish overall, though I have to say, it does have a bit of the…um…retarded look to them. And by retarded I mean they can do anything! Okay, I stole that line from Sarah Silverman.

Kennedy Honors - The Who

I know this is Zeppelin night, but did anyone catch the Kennedy Honors the other night?

A woman by the name of Bettye Lavette completely stole “Love, Reign O’er Me”. I thought the Pearl Jam cover was awesome, but this performance was something else. She’s on at the 2:55 mark on this video.

If you will allow me to share

what I received this holiday season:

1. Framed autographed Manu Ginobili picture.
2. Spurs pajamas
3. Spurs shirt
4. Spurs calendar
5. Manu Ginobili thermos.

I won’t lie, when I opened that Manu picture I shed a tear.

Look at the top of the game thread, ATS picks who he thinks has the advantage at each position by posting a white dot next to said position, and in this game he gave it to Philly, Andre Miller, thus the white dot snub.

I think that is actually the whole point of the blog as created by our evil overlord.

I need to get busy

Reading old game threads, etc. I’ve tried to keep up, but the life of a grad student doesn’t allow for a lot of Spurs time. sigh

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

It’s about priorities. I run a the technical half of a small startup software company and still find time for the Spurs and lots of wine.

True

But I still hate that yellow-toothed coach of theirs

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

You aren’t actually saying that you don’t dislike Carmelo are you?

by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Jan 3, 2009 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

NO.

I’m definitely not saying that. I dislike ALL things nuggets. Especially George

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Lmao. Well Carmelo as I see it is not a threat. Nothing to really hate or like. He defeats himself. I am fine with that

by LionZion on Jan 3, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

That’s a great way of putting it. He really does sabatoge himself.

Sorry, I’m happy now but gonna be a party pooper.

When the dust settles, Are we really gonna be happy with this win??? Against this team.

I guess a win’s a win.

Whoever’s doing the recap, let’s have plenty of anger. At least Pop will be mad.

Somebody come up with stats about three pointers we have avg this season and the +/- on how thats worked

by LionZion on Jan 3, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t think you would like that.

Me doing a recap would be basically a cut and paste of the scoresheet.

I’m not too much more insightful than that. (I did get scared by Hollinger)

Two conclusions:

  • Me not being around brings girls to the site.
  • This roller coaster of a season is not for the faint of heart.

I loved the preview, ATS. I would’ve also picked Miller. …No, not really.

i somehow avoided catching the final score all evening, so was watching earlier today without knowing what happened. i was kind of shitting my pants and blurting out expletives in the second half. not sure if that was more comical or sad.

just picked up this quote from roger mason jr on last nights game. kind of a moniker for the season so far:

"When some of those shots stopped going in, our defense didn’t pick up. That’s human nature, but it’s not championship basketball."

I always thought of some of our other FAs (Derek Anderson, Stephen Jackson) as ringers, on the team but not really part of it. Romaju gets it; I feel like he’s a true San Antonio Spur through and through.
