Game Thread #33: vs Sixers

Philadelphia @ San Antonio

It's been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.

Yeah, it's good to be back.

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - When you see Tony posing without his shirt, can you think of anything BUT the Lemon Song?  Did you guys know that this is Andre Miller's 10th year in the league?  He, just like the song, is very solid but doesn't really go anywhere.
  • Off Guard -"For you to me are the only one".  The most beautiful song I always wanted to dedicate to a woman and never could.  So Manu gets it instead.  Tangerine is a song that you only remember for its name.  Much like Willie Greene.
  • Center -The best there ever was.  Zep at its absolute peak.  Dazed and Confused came out in '68.  The guitar is off the charts and the majesty of it will never be matched.  Remind you of anybody?  Dalembert is from Haiti by way of Canada and brings a good, yet creepy, energy.
  • Power Forward - Bonner is absolutely the Fool.  Thaddeus Young is having a break out year and is enjoying some time in the lime light.  Let's see how he likes a little time in Bowen's light.
  • Small Forward -Hey hey what can we do?  He's our small forward, want a ball all day.  He's our small forward, I stay drunk all  the time.  Iguodala is every bit of Hot Dog.  Kind of fun and out of place, but just an imitation of the real thing.
  • Bench - Your Time Is Gonna Come vs What Is And What Should Never Be
  • Coach - Pop is Stairway To Heaven.  A classic that is so overplayed you take it for granted.  Their coach is like the entire album of Coda.  I don't know anything about it and don't care.
  • Mojo - Commnucinations breakdown.  It's always the same.  Having a nervous breakdown.  It drives you insane.  That's our season fellas.  Learn to love it.
  • Winner - We'll Ramble On
  • Shout Out To the Aussies - Zebra by John Butler Trio came on while I was finishing this up and made me think of you guys.  Butler is fantastic and I love his stuff.  The last lyric of the song is off the charts for me and I have a feeling it would really hit home for my boy Hipuks:  "I could bring love back into my life.  Share it with the world if I got some balance."

Keys To The Game

  • Bench - Last night was a rare NBA night where all 30 teams played.  That means we are both on the segababa.  We'll need quality from our bench tonight.
  • Their Perimeter Shooting -They shoot an otstandingly bad 29.1% from 3-pt.
  • Our New Year Attitude - We need to start playing better or we'll get crushed by our schedule.  Tony and Manu need to step up the quality of their games.

Some other reading

Liberty Baller has a cool feature called Wednesday GM where he proposes various trades.  The Sixers season is going so poorly that I read this line on the blog:

The Sixers looked somewhat decent in the 2nd half of the Clippers game

Other things of possible interest

Recap: Aack.  I forgot to post the January recap thread.  Who wants to volunteer?

Hey ya’ll! I’m a first-time poster, but I’ve been reading for a few months now. You guys are all so fun/funny, and I hope you won’t mind a girl hanging out with you every once-in-awhile. I’m starved for fellow Spurs fans, stuck at stuffy Harvard with a bunch of Celtics lovers. Ugh.

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hi.

Go Spurs Go!

Man, a girl huh? I don’t know about this.

Have you been out to Watch City Brewery? I think that is the name of the place. Great beer.

It’s great to have a girl in the house – and an Ivy Leaguer at that!

Yeah, I don't usually post on game nights

But I’m at work tonight so I figured, why not? All the Aussie’s do it… so I should, too.

I love Watch City Brewing Co! You’ve been? I’ve celebrated many a passed exam there. Sam Adams too—it’s kinda touristy, but I love that White Ale.

Great, now I’m thirsty…

Yeah, about 6-7 years ago I traveled up to Waltham for work on a fairly regular basis. We hit Watch City a couple times for growlers to go and some food.

It’s good stuff. I’ve traveled quite a bit, but when it comes to beer, you can’t really beat Boston and Texas. God bless the USA!

Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!

by tomasito on Jan 3, 2009 7:07 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shiner Blonde is my favorite of the Shiner varieties. But I have to be honest, I haven’t tried them all. It’s one of my goals, though. Maybe I’ll make that my New Year’s resolution.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 7:12 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is a worthy goal. They are all good. Here’s my order of preference:

1. Shiner Black – If I were trapped on a desert island, this would be my beer. Like a lighter, more delicious version of Guinness.
2. Shiner Bock – The original
3. Shiner Blonde – especially when it’s hot outside
4. Shiner 99 – SiMA’s favorite
5. Shiner Holiday Cheer – weird hints of peach/vanilla, but can hit the spot when it’s cold out

Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!

by tomasito on Jan 3, 2009 7:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well I do try to set lofty goals for myself…

That Holiday Cheer sounds like something I need to have. Now. Too bad I probably won’t be able to find it in any Boston grocery stores. But that won’t stop me from trying. I’ll let you know when I try some of the others. The only other one on the list I’ve tried is the Shiner Bock, which was delicious indeed.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 7:21 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ditto

Perfect list by tomasito. It has my crowning approval. He’s right on; you’ll never drink Sam again if you follow this list just one time.

Mmmmm….you left out the hefeweizen. One of my faves. But it MUST be served very cold, in a glass, not out of the bottle. Try it – especially in the summer when it’s 99 degrees outside.

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." – Aldous Huxley

by spurchief on Jan 3, 2009 10:30 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m not a fan of the Hefeweizen. It’s a little too tangy for my taste, especially when you add lemon.

Plus, I don’t want to feel like I’m drinking my beer “the wrong way” if I don’t pour out half the glass, swish the bottle around and pour out the other half, while rubbing my tummy, singing “This Old Man,” and pulling my pants down. Seriously, I just want to drink a beer and relax. If I wanted a project, I’d go out and stain the deck.

Even cutting up limes for Tecate or Dos Equis is a bit too much work for me, but we’ve solved that by pre-cutting the limes so they’re ready to go. Plus my wife usually handles that chore, because I have a knife phobia (I had a particularly vivid recurring dream as a child) and refuse to use anything scarier than a little steak knife.

That last sentence was probably a little bit of over-sharing.

Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!

by tomasito on Jan 4, 2009 6:45 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don’t fruit the beer, tomasito. Unless it’s a Corona, then you have to so it’s drinkable. But otherwise, drink your hefeweizen in peace with no added fruit. Pour in glass, suck down, repeat until swooning. It’s really straightforward.

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." – Aldous Huxley

by spurchief on Jan 4, 2009 8:04 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Copied and pasted from the Shiner website (these directions are also on the label of the bottle):
————————-
Follow these step-by-step directions to POUR YOURSELF AN OUT-OF-BOTTLE EXPERIENCEâ„¢:
- POUR half of the bottle into a glass.
- ROUSE the yeast by swirling the bottle and pouring what’s left into the glass.
- ENJOY this unfiltered brew with a generous wedge
of lemon.
————————
So while I could just pour it in a glass and drink it, I’d still know in my heart that I was doing it “wrong” in the eyes of the Spoetzl brewmasters, and thus not achieving maximum enjoyment.

Catch the Spurs Spirit! It's a Fast-breakin' Fiesta!

by tomasito on Jan 4, 2009 8:45 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bah. Maximum enjoyment is determined by the enjoyer, not the producer. But I get what your are saying. Even the name of it is a little fussy. And for whatever reason, it’s not a fall or winter beer – I can only handle it in the heat of summer.

I’m not sure what to make of you copying stuff direct from the Shiner site. Your attention to detail is overwhelming. Appreciated, but overwhelming.

I love how they trademarked “Out-of-Bottle Experience.”

There’s soooooo much room for trademarking phrases on PtR. We need to step it up.

What about the acceptability of downing a Blue Moon with orange? My dad swears by this, and to his credit, in hot weather the combo is amazing.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 5, 2009 12:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know I'm "just a girl" but...

Blue Moon with a slice of orange is OH so good. Especially in the heat of summer. Right on, Sima…and Sima’s dad.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 5, 2009 1:43 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

PS

Squeezing the orange slice to add some juice to the beer before dropping it in the bottle produces an extra-pleasurable beverage. It’s an admittedly “girly” thing to do, but what can I say? Good is good.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 5, 2009 1:46 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good is good is right, even though you’re just a woman with a small brain. It’s a brain half the size of ours. It’s science.

Next question….. huge monumental answer here. Do you like Cracker Barrel?

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 5, 2009 1:51 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is a trick question. Nobody likes Cracker Barrel.

by AusTechSpur on Jan 5, 2009 1:59 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You’re a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That’s what kind of man you are.

You hit that one out of the park, Sima.

embarrassed grin Yes, I do like Cracker Barrel. Shame on you for trying to trick me, but I can’t lie to my new friends. I love the baked apples, and when there’s no time to cook at home, who can bea the Barrel?? A better question is who DOESN’T like Cracker Barrel, and why the hell not??! (oops, am I allowed to say “hell”. I know there are pretty strict rules around here.)

by surfergirlsa on Jan 5, 2009 2:56 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m beginning to smell a rat here. Surfergirlsa, are you really SiMA with a alias?

As for the CrackerBarrel question, I love their sweet tea. The food, I can take or leave.

by spurchief on Jan 5, 2009 3:03 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As much as I'd like to say I'm just Sima getting in touch with his feminine side...

I’m not Sima. But I’ll take that as a compliment, because he seems like a pretty all right guy. It takes three things for me to say that:

1. Loves the Spurs. A lot.
2. Appreciates good beer.
3. Can quote Anchorman right back to me.

Cracker Barrel does have good sweet tea. But seriously, I don’t get what’s not to love about the food. Have you ever tried the baked apples??

by surfergirlsa on Jan 5, 2009 3:06 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He is a pretty alright guy. You just seemed a little too much like his feminine Wonder Twin there for awhile.

I don’t use the words “baked” and “apple” in the same sentence. But the pork chops are good. Every time I have eaten there, I feel like I need to skip 3 or 4 meals after that to allow my arteries to time to recover. Heavy stuff.

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." – Aldous Huxley

by spurchief on Jan 5, 2009 3:35 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Then you must be baked in the other sense of the word.
;)

I’ve never actually tried the pork chops. I usually opt for breakfast-type foods. And then I run 5 miles the next day, hoping to undo any artery-damage.

LOL

I just got back from dinner with one of my professors. All these comments are funny. So what is it, Sima? Am I your long-lost twin? Or a long lost ex?? I’ve never dated a guy who likes the Spurs, though…

I need to start choosing more wisely.

I would think that would be a pre-requisite before saying ‘yes’ to a date in the first place. Gotta start with the important stuff.

I gotta give it up to SiMA-dad on that one. I have had Blue Moon with lemon and it is quite amazing.

So, I amend my “don’t fruit the beer” mandate with the following exceptions:

1. Blue Moon with either orange or lemon, only in the summer.
2. Corona with two limes, no more, no less.
3. Anything suggested by the Spoetzl brewmeisters, so as not to cross tomasito’s anal retentiveness. He will PUT ME IN THE GROUND unless I add this one.

I’d like to add a delightful little discovery I made this Fall called Frankensteiner. I don’t know who makes it—I was at a bar with a bunch of friends when we all tried it. I should’ve found out so I could buy some. But it came with two orange slices in it, and WOW.

Anyone know who makes Frankensteiner?? Guess I could google it, but that would require work. And I don’t feel like it.

I would so much rather see pictures of dead rotting squirrel corpses than a singular picture of ATS’ rotting ankle.

Great preview though; arguably your best. Vintage ATS is back. I laughed and nodded all the way through reading your names. Just when I think you couldn’t be any dumber…… you go and post something like this. AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF.

Ouch. For the record, I’m not originally from Boston, but still! Mind your manners, speedostuffer.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 12:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just outta curiosity, where are you from originally. I’m a military brat, so I’ve been quite a few places…… Great to have a girl on here—I’ve been trying to convert my sisters, but it’s a chore lol.

Also, congrats on being @ Harvard. Visited the campus up there and almost ended up applying, but I’m a wimp when it comes to cold weather and I made the decision/mistake to become an air force cadet so I wound up at Texas A&M. Anyway, welcome!

Go Spurs Go! Let’s take advantage of Houston’s struggles with another victory! :)

I am from everywhere too—not a military brat, but my dad worked in the technology industry, and they never let us stay in one place for more than 4 years. I was born in North Carolina, then moved all over the place, from SoCal to Texas to New York.

Keep working on your sisters, they’ll come around! They’re crazy if they don’t. Actually, my two older brothers are the reason I became a fan. Their obsession with the Spurs finally won me over. :)

Victory tonight!!!!

And thanks for the congrats about Harvard. I didn’t think I’d ever actually do it. Still wonder sometimes why I did. But overall, it’s going great. Kicking my ass, but I guess that’s to be expected.

What does it say about me when after being gone for 2 weeks, I get home and the first thing I do is log on to the computer to check PTR?

Cyphotilapia Frontosa “Zaire Purple”. This is a striking Cichlid from Lake Tanganyika in Africa. They grow up to 12 inches and from what I’ve read they’re pretty smart and can be hand fed. They’re deep water fish, so when they bring them up, they have to do so in stages, otherwise they get the bends, just like divers. They’re piscivores, feeding at night on helpless little bastards. Pretty cool fish overall, though I have to say, it does have a bit of the…um…retarded look to them. And by retarded I mean they can do anything! Okay, I stole that line from Sarah Silverman.

I think Tony is feeling the sting of the ATS white dot snub.

Ah, the dreaded “ATS White Dot Snub”. Those leave deep scars.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 8:45 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Look at the top of the game thread, ATS picks who he thinks has the advantage at each position by posting a white dot next to said position, and in this game he gave it to Philly, Andre Miller, thus the white dot snub.

by SinCitySpur on Jan 3, 2009 8:49 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Usually ATS is our resident cranky old man, but picking Andre Miller over TP is more like the act of a senile old man.

by tomasito on Jan 3, 2009 8:51 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There is an app for the iphone called fart-o-meter. ATS should listen to that.

I know you are at work, but this may be the game we have to break out the rally no-shirts.

by AusTechSpur on Jan 3, 2009 9:01 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m not at work, that’s Bella. If no-shirts is what it takes, no-shirts is what I’ll do. The party my roommates are having would enjoy that too.

She’s actually already my favorite lady on PtR. It doesn’t take much, but she seems like a winner. I’m just scared that her implication of strippage will flag her with the Godfather.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 3, 2009 9:06 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thanks Sima…I think…?

Sorry, I meant no offense. My shirt (and all other clothes) is still on. Scout’s honor.

by surfergirlsa on Jan 3, 2009 9:07 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No worries, I’m not offended at all. But for future reference, the only one who watches games shirtless on PtR is ATS. Imagine a middle-aged man wearing what looks like a bear-skin rug as a shirt paired with a frontal fanny pack.

except he’s not a stoner.

bummer....

It would probably be easier to work with a stoner. Al you gotta do is promise to pay him in weed to clean the entire house. or withhold payments… either should work.
