An Afternoon In Charlotte
Happy MLK day everyone, although most are off from work today, this is basically the NBA's holiday, and as usual, the Spurs graced us with their typical afternoon game.
1st Quarter: Right off the get-go you knew this was going to be competitive. Bodies flying everywhere, crashing boards and whatnot. Tim and Boris got off to quick starts. And our lovely D, keeps the Bobcraps in the game. Luckily for us, the offense was firing on all cylinders, the D began to pick up, and we were able to squeak out a lead....for now.
2nd Quarter: First thing that really caught my eye this quarter was Fab's beard. Shit, he's giving Pop a run for his money. I'm thinking they should form a ZZ Top tribute band, hell, I'd go see it. Anyway, there wasn't much this quarter, Kurt really stood out in my eyes, as we were kicking ass on the glass, and the high physical play continued. The Bobcats began to slowly creep back near the end of the half, but we still had the lead.
3rd Quarter: Let's just say, Rufus on Fire.
4th Quarter: After trailing virtually the whole second half, we finally get the damn lead back although our offense was still stagnant as hell. So this was going to be yet another close game, that we here have come to enjoy. Basically baskets are traded and we get the ball back with 30 seconds and a 2 point lead. A decent play is ran out of the time out but Timmy gets stuffed by Okafor (why am I so used to this?), the Cats then go on a fast break with time expiring, Felton goes for the tie on a floater, and Timmy says HELL NAW, packs him and the game ends to Diaw missing a potential game winner.
So overall, just your average Spurs vs (Insert crappy team name here) game.
Oh yeah, and there is a NBA League Pass free preview till the 25th, for Time Warner, Dish, and DirecTV. Not sure about any other providers though.

Actually, I would guess most people did not have the day off. Only students and government workers got to stay home and enjoy the magical treat that is Spurs basketball. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten MLK day since I started working.

yeah, most people don’t have it off, such as me…never have.

I missed this one, but it seems like every game is the same. We always find a way to win (when we are not getting blown out).
BTW, is it too early to start the annual “OMG get Finley out of the court!!” rant?

i’m all for that after his clankfest yesterday. 1-9 overall, and 0-7 on 3s? i had to follow it on ESPN’s gamecast, and even then i was yelling for Pop to yank him out. and Tony wasn’t much better at 3-11.
and hey, did anyone catch that supreme performance by the suns? that’s got to be the worst performance ever by a supposed high-caliber team. i’ve never seen a good team get buried so fast in all my life. ladies and gentlemen, i give you the phoenix suns.

the most impressive part of that debacle was Stoudemire’s stat line.
0-7 FG, 3-4 FT, 1 reb, 4 TO, 4 F, 3 points in 30 minutes.

How does a man who’s 6-10 only get 1 rebound in 30 minutes? Isn’t more than one ball bound to fall into his hands, considering he’s a PF?

You guys should check out Bright Side of the Sun, they’re in a trade frenzy over Amare’s last game.

lol i’d rather not go to that site, but if parker pulled that or Manu (duncan is untouchable, naturally), i know we’d be going apeshit as well. i don’t think he even tried to play that game, from what little i watched.

robert-cats had a TON of offensive rebounds and second chance points that kept them in the game and gave them a chance to win. spurs gotta eliminate that crap.
and as the suns begin to set in the west, fat shaq will, in order: come up with a miscellaneous injury that keeps him out an inordinate amount of time, be totally out of shape further delaying his comeback, talk poorly about the suns organization and/or teammates, demand a trade.

it took me forever to figure out “robert-cats” – i’m not all there today.

Why not “Robert-Catherines?”

Because the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats is Robert Johnson and the rumor is that he named the team Bob-cats after himself. Thus, the robert-cats.

Maybe he wanted to name them after the late, great Blues legend Robert Johnson? O.K., probably not.
But that Robert Johnson was a bad ass m10r! He’s probably best known for Sweet Home Chicago (coincidentally the last song Stevie Ray Vaughan ever performed). Robert Johnson was the start of it all and influenced more renown guitarists than I can name.
If you want to check him out… here you go. The first is Wikipedia, the second a recent Vanity Fair article (with eye candy on the right for the boys) and the third is his best known song. Check him out…

Isn’t he the one that according to legend sold his soul to the devil so he could play the guitar like the best of them?
I have the song Crossroads Blues from him.

That’s what he said (no pun intended)… but no one knows for sure. He was a novice when people first saw him play and two years later he apparently played like a virtuoso.
It’s all part of the legend and mystique of the man.

What if his wife’s name was Catherine? Wouldn’t that square the circle…

One thing I forgot to mention about watching that game...
Does anyone else remember that play, I think in the 3rd quarter where Diaw and Manu were fighting over a loose ball in the right baseline corner and Diaw eventually out-tapped Manu for it but wound up on the floor for his trouble?
He basically just got up, full barrel charged right into Manu and knocked him ass over tea kettle to draw an offensive foul. I was shocked not more was made out of this. It was as flagrant as flagrant fouls get. He was mad at Manu for God knows what (Gino probably gave him a sneaky elbow or something) and retaliated immediately.
The dumbshit announcers were praising Diaw for his hustle and even raising the possibility of a Manu flop when the replay of the sequence was being shown, and then it was like their truck finally saw Diaw’s two hand shove and screamed “ABORT!! ABORT!!!” into the announcer’s ears while simultaneously deciding NOT to show the remainder of the clip to the audience.
I think later at the game they re-showed the first half of the play to again praise Diaw for his scrappiness and hustle, but not the second half. It just abruptly cuts off. How lame.
I’m still amazed Diaw didn’t get a technical or a flagrant foul on the play. Did the refs just assume a French guy can’t possibly be violent?

No one is paying atention to the bobcats… even the referees
