Game Thread #37: vs Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs, Jan 14, 2009 8:00 PM CST

It's our first look at the Lakers. If you have heard what Pop has to say about them, you know they are THE team in the West. I'd like to think that means this game will mean something to us. But I know better. I hope you guys know better too. Without further adieu, a rather boring game preview for just another regular season game.

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - Parker needs to just kill Fisher in the match up.
  • Off Guard - This would be a good game for Manu to find his mojo. Kobe had a bad shooting night last night against the Rockets and we don't seem to have anybody that can slow him down.
  • Center -I'm interested to see if Tim can get his game going against Bynum and Gasol. The Lakers don't like double-teaming Tim and both guys are long and tall.
  • Power Forward - I have no idea how Bonner will matchup defensively for the Lakers, but Gasol will have to stand out at the 3 point line to defend Bonner.
  • Small Forward - I'd like to see more Roger and less FinDog in this game. It's not like Radmanovic is a hard cover.
  • Bench - They are missing a lot from their bench. I think Farmar, Vujacic, and Walton are all out.
  • Coach - If it wasn't for the fact that Pop and Phil seem to hate each other so much, I'd think they'd go to dinner and let their assistants coach this game.
  • Mojo - We are a pretty lousy 14-7 at home, so we aren't scaring anybody at the big phone booth. The Lakers played last night. I'm going with the Lakers wanting to prove something more than we want to prove something. If our team wants to prove anything, they can start by proving to me that they want to beat the better teams in the league. I just don't think we really want to compete as a team yet.
  • Winner - We are kicking Desh's ass in this one.

Keys To The Game

  • Gasol and Bynum on the offensive glass - We are going to have to find a way to control our defensive boards.
  • Kobe - Do we have anybody that can make him work hard for his points?
  • Pressure Defense - Will we handle their pressure defense on the wings? The Lakers like to trap the side pick and roll.

yeah..

Has ATS run out of Led Zep theme here? anyway.. am really looking forward to this game. have to wake up a bit early to watch it. i miss a lot of games as they mostly happen at 3AM or 4AM here and thats not a good viewing time for someone living in Europe. We better win this one for my sake :D

It’s a normal game, get it? The Spurs don’t give a shit, it’s just a normal game to them. So the players get normal names.

Well, this game is on Australian paytv live (when I’m at work) and a replay a few hours later.

Will I be watching the replay??? Depends on the result.

So far, the Spurs games shown on paytv have been against the Suns (lose), Hornets (lose) and the Bucks (lose)

theres been 3 whole spurs games on espn this year? this is why i don’t bother with foxtel…

by sleep research facility on Jan 14, 2009 6:35 AM CST up reply actions

Either do I.

It’s at my parent’s house.

Well, this is the 13th week of the season.

Oz paytv (foxtel) shows 2 games a week so that’s 26 games shown go far.

Being small market, old, boring and dirty, the Spurs surprisingly get a few games a year.
And we usually get more coverage in the playoffs (obviously)

Even though the viewing schedule is already set, some of the game selections just make me mad.
A few weeks ago, it was Bulls vs Miami and the week before, it was Bulls vs another BAD team.

12:00 Argentina? I can’t catch a break…

I love how ATS went Shyamalan on us. We were expecting his usual wackiness and he went all serious on us. Like my folks when I told them I didn’t want to go to college and wanted to try working right out of high school. That went well.

Another weird move is that you got rid of “intangibles” and left “mojo” in there. I totally disagree, by the way. The Lakers had all the luck last night – that can’t hold for two games in a row, can it?

Is it too much to ask for the Lakers to decompose like the Celtics right now?

I got rid of intangibles the first post I did after you added mojo. It seemed redundant to me. Glad you’ve been paying attention!!

Our shooters REALLY need to come out in this one. I think if we’re going to beat them it is going to be on offense. We need 30 from TP, atleast 15 from Mase, and Bonner needs to hit some big threes. Is Gasol any good defending at the three point line? Can Bonner beat him if he needs to drive? LA has a lot of fire power. But so do we, when we want it bad enough.

We’re going to need some good relief off the bench. Hill needs to make every minute count.
Definately right on the point that this would be a great game for Manu to find his mojo in.

I have faith.

I’m going with the Lakers wanting to prove something more than we want to prove something.

I don’t really know what the Lakers want to prove, but I would think that at least subconsciously the Spurs want to prove that a healthy Manu would have made a clear difference in last year’s WCF. We also want to see how our new guys matchup with their counterparts on the Lakers. But whatever the motives tonight, make no mistake, the Spurs are the one team that can keep the Lakers from reaching the Finals again this year. We need to be learning all that we can about them, starting tonight.

by 4Him on Jan 14, 2009 12:34 PM CST reply actions

spurs dont have anything to prove. its only january. we’ll get a good look at the measuring stick in the west tonite. what we will probably see is that matt bonner will have a very tough time guarding either gasol or bynum. i expect that we will see a lot of KT and Fab.

i have decided to start the campaign for trading someone to the milwaukee bucks for charlie villanueva. not sure who we give up yet, but i like CV as the athletic big we need.

my prediction is that manu has to go off for us to win against the lakers right now. if he’s 20 or under, we lose. 21-27 anyone’s call. 28+ means spurs win. this assumes that we can manage to keep the lakers off of the offensive glass somewhat.

anybody check out the magic continuing to bomb away 3-balls last night? geez.

by bones on Jan 14, 2009 1:02 PM CST reply actions

And you guys say I’M a cynical pessimist.

Matthew’s totally wrong, IMO.

We’ll be fortunate to see just -11. We don’t care right now and they have lots to prove. An off-season of “if Manu was healthy” will lead LA to more than an 11 surplus me thinks.

But I’m still hoping for that team bus accident anyway.

by SgtinManusArmy on Jan 14, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

the team bus accident/75% of the roster suspended thing is what i am hoping for in the AFC championship game……….

to keep the football analogy going, the spurs can win, but we’ll need the equivalent of a defensive/special teams TD to do it. bottom line, i think you, matt and i close to the same page here.

Two guys are drinking at a bar on the top floor of a Manhattan skyscraper. Both guys are getting really drunk talking about the great view and nature of skyscrapers. One guy tells the other guy, “You know, with these tall buildings they get this incredible updraft between them. It is so strong, in fact, that you can jump off the top of the building and the updraft will life you back up.” The other guy calls bullshit on him and says, “prove it.” The first guy goes to the window and jumps out, falls 3/4 of the way to the ground and then comes zooming back up and lands in the window and says, “see”! The second guy says, “holy shit! That was badass. I’ve got to do that”, and jumps out the window. He goes hurtling down and slams into the ground. The bartender turns to the first guy and says, “Superman, you are a mean drunk!”

Hard to say really...

I remember him being drafted and had the requisite Spurs fan reaction of “who?” so its mostly been the intrigue, and his raw tools/athleticism are what we need…..so its mostly out of curiosity/anticipation to see if they struck gold again, this time with a big man, which they havent had luck with (Scola going to Hous, Javtokas, that Russian dude etc etc)

When I signed up on the recap I stated that I might be at the game. I’m stupid and I thought that the game was in LA so I obviously won’t be there. I should be at the Lakers Spurs game on the 25th of this month though. I’m still in for the recap… Keys to the game:
-Bench. This includes Manu. If Manu, Hill, and Udoka/Bowen provide offensive power then I think we’re gold. This is a great game for Manu to get his Mojo back. In the playoff searies last year he was absolutely shut down by Sasha Vu. Actually Manu was shut down by his own ankle but Sasha thinks he was the cause and he was annoying the crap out of Manu. Anyway besides kobe the Lakers have no one who can gaurd tony and manu. I will be watching this game with a bunch of laker fans so if we lose tonight I might kill someone-or myself. C’mon Spurs!!!! I’m amped for this one.

That’s exactly the problem. They’re a two-man team. You can count on Peja either chocking or being injured come playoff time. And if West’s shooting is off for any game, they might as well forget about winning.
