Game Thread #36: Vs. Magic

So, fellas, this is it. This is what we were waiting for. The Big One. We need to hold the line - our wives and sons are counting on us. We are at the edge of the precipice, a step away from certain death, but we will take that step and venture into the unknown on nothing but faith and guts.

Anyone wants to go home? You can do that - I won't hold it against you, you dickless wusses. But you will miss the Spurs' slow build up towards greatness: you will miss Duncan's dominance in the paint, Tony's mastery of the three-pointer, Hill and Mason's transformation into super-scrubs, Finley's discovery of the fountain of basketball youth, Bonner's emergence as the best redhead to ever play this game, Manu's majesty, Pop's guile.

Teams overlook tired old Spurs. They will do so again, and before they notice we'll be upon them. SNARLING at them! ...In a polite manner. They will see RAGE in our eyes! ...And a gracious smile in our lips. We shall overcome! Come playoff season, we will be right in the thick of it. You should know this - now believe it.

...

Seriously, though, the piece-of-cake part of our schedule is definitely over. From now on we'll have to face the very best this league has to offer, and we'll start tonight with the Magic. They're the second best team in the East at this moment, considering the Celtics' sudden collapse, and have the league-best record on the road. That's no joke, guys. I won't even elaborate on how they picked us apart earlier on the season - but for the record, that was our worst loss so far.

Let's do some real previewing, after the jump:

Breakdown

  • Point Guard - Tony is good, Tony is nice. We love the Tony. Sure, it would be better if he had Hill's amiable grin, but he is what he is, guys. And if we're going to stand for Manu's boneheaded TOs, we have to stand for Tony's occasional selfish play. Not many can run with Tony when he's on, and Jameer Nelson sure isn't one of 'em - never mind that he had 24 points against us un December. (And Tony's taller than him. ...No, seriously.)
  • Off Guard - It's funny all the controversy that Manu's play is having in such a Manu-centered site. I for one think he's improving daily, and we're getting highlight plays every single game. So please, uber-really-huge Manu fans, don't defend him from the mere really-huge Manu fans... We're all on the same side here. Let's act like it. (And just in case you don't know, the Magic rook is called Courtney Lee.)
  • Center - This is the big matchup of the night. Howard is a physical beast, but he can't shoot the ball. He sure can dunk, but he has no jumper. None. Nada. Zip. If you don't believe me, check out ATS's find - his shot chart for the season. Timmy, on the other hand, has been settling for jumpers more than ever, and his interior D has been suspect for a few games now. Stopping Howard won't be easy, but if there's someone with the skill set to at least slow him down, that's our best player, Tim freakin' Duncan.
  • Power Forward - Hollinger says that Lewis is playing some semi-efficient PF defense these days. I think it's just a myth, like girls on the Internet, but considering he'll be guarding Matty, we won't be testing this claim tonight. If Bonner's on from 3, we might at least be getting some points to offset Lewis' abuse.
  • Small Forward - Boy, I miss Hedo. Hedo and Rasho - how could we let them go with those names? Every time I watch them play I feel like revisiting the Nostalgia thread. My mouth waters imagining him at SF for the Spurs once more.
  • Bench - Ben Q Rock said at 48moH that JJ Redick can shoot the 3. I don't buy it. (Stats? Go away.) Honestly, I don't think Van Gundy has a lot of trust on his bench, so why should I? Hill and Mason are my joy, and Fabricio is back and sporting a mean beard. Do I have to keep going?
  • Coach - Another important beard to be witnessed here. How great would it be if the entire team grew their beards? That's about 10 extra intimidation points right out of the dressing room. And no one wants to post up against a guy with a huge, greasy beard. By the way, do you think this will be the night we'll start a tradition of Hack-a-Howard? We should. Do your thing, Pop.
  • Intangibles - The Magic are playing like they have something to prove (and maybe they do) and we're often guilty of treating January games as if they were January games. Hmm.
  • Mojo - We outbeard them two to zero. Also, I believe having the site owner publicly claim that the Spurs have no chance of winning the championship this year puts us lowly fans in the clear in the mojo department for the rest of the season.
  • Winners - Beards.

Keys To The Game

  • Suckitude - This is the first suckitude test in a while. The Lakers are next. I think these two games will set the mood in PTR for the rest of January.
  • Softness - If we can keep their offensive rebound below 7, I'll be happy. Ecstatic. Defensive rebouding is obviously key in a game where Dwight Howard plays against you. If our 3-point shooting is off tonight, and it could easily be, considering the Magic are a pretty good defensive team, we need Manu, Tony and Hill to drive to the basket. Soft won't cut it tonight.
  • Hill - He can walk on water, raise the dead and fly.

Some other reading

I couldn't find many Orland Magic fansites, but the ones that I did find are worth checking:

Third Quarter Collapse (An SB Nation blog - isn't that the perfect name for a Spurs blog? Almost as active as PTR, too, and the main writer, Ben Q Rock, is money.)
Orlando Magic Blog (Such an original name.)
Magic Pride (Chock full of stats and other stuff I don't believe in.)
Magic Madness (Pretty active forum.)

Other things of possible interest

So I was checking Third Quarter Collapse and noticed that their latest post was about Garnett's award as defensive player of the trimester. Surprisingly enough, the poster thought Dwight Howard had been robbed, and put a poll that asked the regulars' opinion. Guess what? Only three brave fellows voted for KG, and their IPs are probably in the hands of a hacker as we speak.

Still, that's loyalty, and I expected nothing else. So I'm adding a poll to this post to test your loyalty. Let's show them how it's done!

By the way, did you guys hear that the crab dribble exists after all? It doesn't resemble LeBron's walk in any way or fashion, but it exists. Check out Basketbawful's post on it. The following video was done by Didn't Draw Iron, a great blog you should all bookmark:

It all makes sense now

In fact, when I did my rant on Garnett I forgot to mention this site as the source of the video summarizing his bouts of superdickery. I'm a poopy head, and I apologize. In fact, check out his own rant: it's worth the time. (He even used some of the same pictures... Plagiarism!)

Anyone else reading Farmar's blog at Playboy? I wholeheartedly approve.

Oh, and this was in the Clippers recap, but in case you don't click on the links, don't miss the worst airball ever. Even I can do better.

Did you notice that Stampler's back? And somewhat cheery, too. Life's good.

New here? Stay around - PTR's a great place to meet new people. So much love.

UPDATE: The Celtics actually won today. They beat the poor widdle Raptors, with Calderon playing like ass and Bosh not far behind. Check the CelticsBlog post-game thread if you want to put Matthew's post in perspective. Holy crap. Wonder what they would've said if they'd lost.

Game feeds

Check this game thead at gametime for specific links to good quality feeds. If you arrive late in the game, there game feed links are usually among the first 50 posts of the thread.

Recap:  spurchief will be writing this recap, so I'm already looking forward to that. In case anyone here feels like writing one for future games, here are the guidelines. Sign up now, don't be shy. (Although maybe now that Stampler is back he'll be doing some of them. Or all of them? Stampler?)

That too a while… off to play some Mass Effect. Being alone for a few days is kind of liberating – but don’t tell my GF.

I’m excited about an actual game blog as opposed to the flirt fests that have been going on this weekend. Unfortunately but fortunately I’ll be watching this game at the local sports bar where everybody knows your name and no one pays for beer. I have no idea how they stay in business. Spurs 98 Magic 96.

Yo yo

Sorry I haven’t been around much lately. I’ve been travelling from place to place in these great united states, spreading my opinions far and wide on subjects such as politics, religion, and money (and any other subjects I can think of that are inappropriate in polite company). Anyway, I wanted to say that I am going to the game tonight and I am currently writing this from a San Antonio area Comfort Suites. So wish me luck.

I would volunteer to do a recap, but i’m sitting in the upper deck, so I think our friends in Australia, Argentina, Croatia, Egypt, etc will have better views than me.

Hope all those you know and care about back in Palestine are doing Ok. Personally, I’m glad you are here instead of there right now.

I had a co-worker who’s family — wife and three kids — was in Lebanon on vacation when the shit went down a couple years ago. Stressful to the level I can’t even imagine.

Man, LD – are you trying to get us to spend all of our time on this blog? Great job! I especially liked the Pop/Kerr photo – as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. You should probably have a contest to put a caption to that photo…

I want the Spurs to win this with Parker dominating. Its not that important to our record (2nd in the west), not important for me (after all, the cavs swept us in 07 but in the playoffs it was a different story) its not that important for Manu (he still has a lot of time to get into shape and reach his average level of play) or even Popovich (he is too drunk to care in january) but the frenchie…..I want him to show what a real little scoring PG looks like, I want him to suffocate that Nelson punk into a 8 point, 4-12, 4TO night. For the love of God and Eva do it!

Oh BTW, about the air ball, funny but in my high school team there used to be 5 shots like that per game (and lets not talk about trainings) . The level of play is not very good in my city (consider that I was the starting center and key player of the NÂș2 team in the city)

Parker needs to destroy nelson, if not its gona be along night. Do you remember what tony’s teardrop looked like? That was my favorite tony finish. Duncan has to be more aggressive . I can’t remember why or how we got rid of hedu? he is also a headache when he gets rolling by driving or the 3 ball. He makes them much harder to defend.

I loved that hustle play from Finley. He stopped Howard from getting an offensive rebound and easy follow up slam dunk, then ran down the ball and saved the possession, and the Spurs get a bucket on the other end. Hustle play of consequence …. the types of plays that go a long way to changing the course of a game.

Was it just hot shooting or bad 3 pt D by us?

No amount of bad D can produce that percentage. Not that the D was good.

Well, I’m going to bed. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Take heart in a hard-fought game against the elite of the East. Make no mistake – the Magic are one of the best two teams in the East, and one of the best 3 overall. We were damn close.

My apologies for missing the game. My beloved sister decided it would be an excellent idea to do all her homework on the last day of vacation, and give me no information whatsoever about it, only telling me an hour before gametime that she would be needing the computer for an extended period of time.
To say the least, I was exacerbated at her decision but could do nothing but concede the computer.
So I miss the fucking game and we lose after they go motherfucking crazy shooting threes, way to fucking go Spurs. I’ll have the halftime fish pic next game, come hell or high water.

You know what I hate more than anything...

…when the Spurs lose? Especially to a ‘younger’ / inexperienced team? Selfishly, it’s not the fact that they actually lost the game. It’s about how everybody who knows anything about basketball (or doesn’t at all, for that matter) talks about how old and dusty the Spurs are and how ’they’re done, through, gone, finished, etc.’
So, until the next win, brace yourselves. Let’s just hope the next win is against a .500 or better team, or else we’ll have to hear about THAT too.

And then Matthew will tell me the team is lottery-bound.

And I’ll leave a comment just cursing because (even in 2017) I wont be able to watch the games properly.

Ha-ha – you guys are hilarious! But don’t worry, there will always be a few non-fairweather fans around, and as long as we keep R.C./Pop-type people in the front office, we’ll always have a fighting chance.

i’m trying to stay in the present, because after the spurs-lakers series, i thought how much longer we’d have Duncan and Manu roaming the court (as well as Pop leaving when Duncan does), and i got absurdly sad. i don’t want to think about it again until i see that sad, sad day. i might cry. jk, badasses don’t cry

On the other hand, do badasses say au contraire?

Niet. Badasses have Russian accent.

SO!

Who’s going to root for the Rockets tonight? ’Cause I will. And I want the game to reach triple overtime.

And I want Kobe to break a leg. …I mean, like in the theater!

by LatinD on Jan 13, 2009 3:48 PM CST reply actions

I’ll probably root for the Lakers to win in 3 OT. I don’t think we will be able to catch the Lakers in the standings.

Nope, not gonna happen. Best we need to be hoping for now is the lakers wearing themselves down to nothing come playoffs. Or injuries, it’s probably okay to pull for those too. I’m not going to be sad if their team bus careens into a canyon and explodes on impact.

Hard to root against the rockets, my guy Scola plays there after all…

Funny. I was trying to avoid wishing for an injury, and you go ahead and mass murder the entire team.

by LatinD on Jan 13, 2009 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Not with that attitude, we won’t. Hmph! *walks away, nose high in the air

I’m hoping that Kobe’s bad side finally comes out and he rips a towelboy’s head off, on national tv, while saying a racist word, and criticizing the commissioner, while burning the American flag.

I just laughed outloud at work again. I’ll be pulling for Houston tonight too. Maybe by some miracle working from the Guy upstairs they will wear down the Lakers and tire them out for tomorrow night.

Hey, erivera. Nice to see you around here. (BTW, you guys have no bench. :P)

by LatinD on Jan 13, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

So… will there be a bunch of us hanging out tonight? Worth creating a thread?

by LatinD on Jan 13, 2009 7:37 PM CST reply actions

I just created one.

I’ll be around, but if it’s just you and me, get ready for the rumors to start.

by Hipuks on Jan 13, 2009 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

Alas, it is not to be.

by LatinD on Jan 13, 2009 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

Hm. About to start.
