Spurs sign Salim Stoudamire
[Mgmnt note: This is from the FanPosts. Thought I'd do a bit of a SBNation big-brother act at PtR, and get something about this signing on the front page. -bb]
Apparently, Damon Stoudamire's stint with the Spurs was not painful enough. Now we get another vertically challenged ball hog to sit at the end of our bench. Woo hoo!! This has been the best off season ever!
I wish that people paid attention to the FanShots. Then I could post this there instead of in the FanPosts section, with it's stupid 75 word minimum.

if one of these fools can’t back up Tony Parker efficiently then its pretty much not meant to be.

The five-headed monster
Someone needs to come up with an adequate nickname for this group of would-be 2nd string point guards.

This Hill Pick just keeps getting worse
Why waste a first round pick when you can just as easily get some bum from someone elses bench?

Mario Chalmers would have been a perfect backup for Tony.
I think the club are nervous about Hill’s ability to play his rookie season. Otherwise I see no point in signing Stoudamire. It looks like patience and a lot of time is what Hill will need to be a good backup in the NBA.
I think we’ll see Vaughn as the primary backup at the point again.

I love giving washed-up, washed-out guys a “last chance in the NBA.”
:: slamming my head into my desk repeatedly ::
But on the bright side, at least we won’t have to spend any money on new SPURS unis for Salim. That had to be the biggest selling point for the FO.

not as bad as you think...
SS (we should probably call him Heinrich, or Luftwaffe…) actually isn’t that bad of a pickup. He got close to no playing time in ATL (for whatever reason, I get the Fox Sports package for ATL teams… don’t ask how… I see a lot of Hawks games…) so he could be a nifty piece that can be had on the cheap. Watching him play in college, he wasn’t just the shooter that people might remember him as in college. He’s kind of a spark plug that can affect the tempo of games.
Hopefully what the FO is thinking is that he can be a guy that can be a Leandro Barbosa type guy, that gets into position before the D even realizes they were on a break…

This was a brilliant move. Once I heard that the Knicks are prepared to release Stephon Marbury, I was heading over here to post that his signing with the Spurs would be moments away. Since it’s been a given that we have to have a washed up shoot-first point guard, this move nixes that mistake.

Marburys Career Numbers...
Are 19.7ppg and 7.9 apg….that is actually very very impressive….hes got a bad rap for sure, but as you can see, he’s no slouch.

Since you have my favorite signiture on PtR, I’m going to simply chose to believe that you’re being sarcastic. When I think of ‘slouch’ (and monkey-turd-athletic-shoes), Starbury is easily in my top 5 in the association.
Mighty Mouse, Van Excrement, Findog, Roho, Steve Smith, etc. also all had great pasts/decent career numbers pre-SPURS.

here’s a pretty good assessment of starbury’s career thus far on truehoop: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-34-104/What-Does-Stephon-Marbury-Have-to-do-to-Prove-He-Can-t-Help-Your-NBA-Team-.html
now, henry abbott is something of a wienie when it comes to criticism, so when he comes down this hard on a person — not a team, not an impersonal organization, but a person — you know he didn’t do it just because he can.
you ain't a beauty but hey you're alright.

My point was...
His rep is for being shoot first, but his career avg of 7.9 apg is pretty good and way higher than one would imagine, and he led the league in total assists a few years back….but i dont think he’s being released, not immediately anyway.

For a guy that has done 20/8 for his career he has done a great job of never getting his teams anywhere or accomplishing anything. In fact every time he’s left a team they’ve done considerably better.

this whole thing can be explained easily enough: Mamma Stoudamire has a compromising picture of Popovich and a goat.

Haha. If that’s the cause, what does type of pictures does Jacque Vaughn have of him? I shudder at the thought.

I dont understand why so much pesimism about this signing. Salim is a SG, a terribly undersized one, but he is a great shooter. Last time I checked Barry went to Houston and the rest of the role players cant hit the side of a house.
Besides, if he sucks that will make no difference. Pop is going to play Vaughn in the playoffs anyway….

(BTW anyone knows which are the top lottery options in 2009? Missing the playoffs doesnt seem a bad idea right now)

Paraphrasing prevalent PtR reaction: “Yet another boneheaded move by Pop and the gang. I bet Pop is responsible for the current mess on Wall Street as well. I once beat Salim Stoudamire in a game of 1-on-1. 700 Billion Dollars couldn’t save the Spurs because their Front Office is so dumb.”
Well, my friends, I’m going to be a maverick, and speak truth to power, and stand up for those on Main Street, or at least, on Houston Street. I like this signing. How could this hurt? Young guy, can shoot the lights out, can’t carry an offense, has trouble getting off his own shot, but doesn’t have to with Timmy and Tony around. Should help on the offensive end, possibly as a spark off the bench, while Manu recovers.
Plus, after a tough stint in Atlanta, I’m guessing he’ll be motivated and hungry (to improve, hopefully, not for puffy tacos), and will fall right in line. Someone compared him to Damon Stoudamire, which I think is appropriate, except that he’s like the Portland version from 10 years ago.

“How can this hurt?”
Explain. I need to know what context you mean this in. Do you mean it as a basis of comparison? Like- “Compared to polio, how can THIS (Salim) hurt?” Do you mean it as an exasperated “since there’s no one left, we might as well go for it?” I keep hearing the words “Nick Van Exel” as an answer to your original question, but I want to make sure I’m understanding you correctly.
by SgtinManusArmy on Sep 28, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Signing Nick Van Exel in 1994 wouldn’t have hurt. It was signing him more than a decade later that was the problem, at a point in his career where he a) felt like he had the green light all the time, but no longer had the skills to back it up, and b) when he couldn’t guard anyone and must have led the league in and-1 fouls on guys blowing by you for 48 minutes.
So let me clarify. This could hurt if they bench Timmy and start Salim at PF or Center, and run the offense through him in the post. It could hurt if they let him coach the team while Pop works on his wine collection. It could hurt if they let him drive the bus to road arenas and he runs over Manu’s other foot. But if all he does is take Jacque Vaughn’s minutes? Or if he just sits on the bench all year? How does it hurt?
I also think he’d fit well on the second unit to give Manu (when he comes back) someone else on the court who can put the ball in the basket, so he doesn’t have to force passes to offensive juggernaut Fab Oberto. Manu and Roger Mason could handle running the point, and Stoudamire could run around looking to shoot.

Wait….. I’m even more confused. Manu and Roger are running the point, and Salim is running around just looking for shots (a la 2006 Van Excrement, btw) as a……forward?
We’ve got enough human victory cigars and bodies to fill third string minutes or ride the pine at this point. I would have preferred that the FO keep Gist in this roster spot.
by SgtinManusArmy on Sep 29, 2008 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wish they’d kept Gist as well, but I don’t think the moves are related at all. Adding Ian, KT, and Tolliver in addition to Fab, TD, and Bonner is what sent Gist overseas, imo.
I would argue that 2006 Van Exel played a spectacularly ineffective backup point role moreso than an off-the-ball shooter role. Stoudamire obviously wouldn’t match up with other teams forwards defensively, but it’s a fairly common tactic to play a small shooting guard if you have a bigger guy (Manu or Mason) handling the point. Plus, the second unit will be seriously offensively challenged while Manu is out.
Ah well, I guess we could post back and forth until the cows come home, but we’ll just have to wait for the season to start to see.

Touche.
And for the record, I’m not rooting for Salim to fail; I actually hope that he is a viable cog in the machine and possibly even averages 35 per night. I just don’t see either happening and am again confused by this signing. I’ve grown content with the theory that the FO simply recognized the potential savings of just having him use Damon’s jerseys on the bench, and pulled the trigger. I hope I’m wrong.

i actually think this is not a bad move either. it’s not great, but it’s not bad. i’m just glad we didn’t flush 2 mil on pargo…unless we flushed 2 mil on salim…does anyone know what we’re paying him?

It’s a two year deal: 826,269/884,881
The first year is only partially guaranteed. I have no idea how much of it is guaranteed.
The second year is a team option.

thanks, ATS. i read somewhere that it wouldn’t be a huge loss if they needed to get rid of him early, so i guess not a whole lot is guaranteed.
