PARGO?
So mysa.com reports that Jannero Pargo is a possibility to join the team. I'm thinking that means if they do indeed sign him, they are thinking of putting Curious George down to the Toros. Either that or burying him on the bench, which doesn't make sense. I think Pargo would definitely be an upgrade for the immediate over JV and Hill, but I don't know if I'm sold on him overall. But if this does happen, it doesn't give me a lot of faith in the FO, because once again their draft pick won't pay off for the immediate. And also their belief that Hill was going to be an immediate impact player was off, so that gives me a LOT of confidence in their ability to evaluate player talent. Who was it that we could have drafted instead of Hill? I can't seem to remember.

Wow. If that’s true that really puts the Hill pick into question. What was this crap about the Spurs brain trust celebrating when Hill was still on the board? Pargo is the player Hill might become in a few years if everything works out for him. Well at least the front office is willing to admit their mistake and look for someone else.
Since you asked, the Spurs passed on:
Donte Greene-6’10” athletic SF who shoots lights out from deep. Has potential to be the next Rashard Lewis, but needs to be developed.
J.R. Giddens-6’5” SG who is ready to go both on offense and defense. One of the top athletes in the entire draft.
Chris Douglas-Roberts-6’7” GF who can score in bunches.

yeah, i was actually being a little sarcastic. it sees that if they wanted someone who could contribute right off the bat, why not go with JRG or CDR?

Wow indeed. I don’t even know how to respond if this is true. This has been a horrid offseason IMO so it looks like the hits just keep coming.

BTW, I do not really like Pargo as a player. He has a sub-40% shooting percentage. He just takes bad shots rather than pass the ball. Sure he has some big scoring nights, but almost always he needs a ton of shots to get those scores. He is an OK defender though, and still an upgrade over Vaughn, but his shot selection will have some Spurs fans pulling out their hair, refusing to shave, or forgoing spa treatment.

i agree that he seems to take a bunch of shots to get his points. that’s why i don’t think i’m too thrilled about him coming. i guess we’ll seee if this actually happens.

If Pargo was in a spurs uniform he would not be expected to play the same role he played last season with New Orleans i.e spark off the bench. The spurs already have a guy who can come in and throw down 20 points and hopefully his ankle will be all healed up and ready to roll come the start of the season.
There is no way he runs and guns to the degree he did there, he just wont get playing time if he does. Pargo would be a great addition and his shooting % would really improve in S.A, he’d get a lot more clean looks.

Does anybody honestly think the Spurs would sign Pargo because they are ready to give up on George Hill after two weeks of summer league play? It’s much more likely that the front office is acquiring assets to make a trade involving Vaughn, Bonner and another player or draftpick for frontcourt help. Hill may not have been the most impressive player in summer league action but it’s far to early to label him a bust or suggest that he cannot help the Spurs in any fashion this year. How many late first round picks actually contribute meaningful minutes for any team in their rookie seasons? The fact that Pop and RC are so high on Hill should make you excited to see what he can offer rather than skeptical about the front office’s ability to evaluate talent. Try not to bury the Spurs for the coming season until you actually get a chance to see the finished product. This off-season is far from over.

Okay Krud, you sold me.
I was actually secretly hoping that we we’ve been compiling trade assets that when all put together, may actually produce a valuable player for the team in the swap. I’m not sure who would be stupid enough to accept the literal pu-pu platter in the JV, Rocket and Pargo; but I’m still hoping and have delayed the fury. I’m convinced that there can be no other explanation for this off season.
Seriously though, what WOULD be a good trade for that trio? What WOULD we be lucky to get??
A twin-bed comforter?
A desk lamp?
A box of QuakerOats Oatmeal (variety pack)?
A tire guage?
Robert Swift?

Now why would you want to start a trade rumor thread like this?
Here are trades that I would make for The JV, Rocket, and Pargo
- A flaming bag of dog poo on Pop’s doorstep
- Rogaine for Manu
- A bumper for a Ford Fairlane
- Some fucking rain
- A copy of the lyrics to Life’s Rich Pageant
- Plastic Dracula teeth for all PtR’ers

You forgot...
- 4 tubes of Prep H cream
- two tickets to a John Tesh concert
- a dinner with Mark Cuban

Of course on their own merits none of those players should be particularly enticing to other franchises but you can never underestimate the value of an expiring contract. I think both the Blazers and Bulls in particular may be looking to move players in exchange for saving a little bit of cash. As we’ve seen with deals for Gasol and Artest there are always other issues when considering player movement. The Blazers have a huge number of young, talented and inexperienced players that they are going to have to pay in the next few years and the Bulls having recently paid big bucks for Deng and seemingly stuck with Ben Gordon may also be looking to move some salaries around. I would not at all be surprised to see someone like Nocioni (who has a reasonable contract over the next few years but is always involved in trade rumors) or Travis Outlaw be moved for experienced (read OLD) players with expiring contracts. If Pargo is signed he will not be traded (I don’t think they can do that under the CBA until at or near the trade deadline) and the Spurs would be crazy to move Splitter’s rights (He’s too valuable a player and I firmly believe that the NBA will address the nutty contract restrictions that keep late first rounders in Europe in the next two years) but the recent additions of Hill, Mason and Tolliver make both JV and Bonner highly likely to be moved. Of course the Spurs won’t take on any huge contracts or jeopardize their cap space in 2010 but I think with a little creativity and good will from other teams (they have always had good relationships with Pritchard and Del Negro) something can get done.

What? Outlaw for Bonner and JV? That is crazy talk. Outlaw is very well liked by the Blazer organization. They only have him on the books until 2010, the same time period we are stuck with the dead weight of Bonner. Not in our wildest dreams will the Blazers do something so ridiculous as to trade a young athlete like Outlaw for Junior Varsity and the human victory cigar. You think they would do that to save 1 million (Vaughn’s salary)? They have the richest owner in the NBA. No way would he give away an up and coming player, and potentially damage his team’s chemistry to save a million bucks (or two since they will probably end up in luxury tax territory).
Outlaw is always in rumors because the Spurs want him bad. Unfortunately they will have to give up more than a couple of crappy players to get him. It’s not like Outlaw is some sort of outlandish salary burden at 4 million per year.
Also, Raef LaFrentz (12.7 million) and Steve Francis (15.7 million) come off the books next season . Even if Darius Miles ends up becoming a cap hit, the Blazers are looking pretty good salary wise with their young team.
As for the Bulls and Nocioni, we would have to trade more than JV and the Red Rocket. Bowen or Fabricio would be the only guys who would work. Both of them are contracted until 2010 and are not likely to be hot commodities this season.
The Spurs don’t have much to trade this season. It really is too bad they screwed the pooch on the draft.

Wishful thinking
Outlaw isn’t going be a Spur anytime soon. The Spurs should have addressed their needs on the perimeter in the draft. It’s not like there was a dearth of them in this year’s draft.

HORROR
The San Antonio Express News is reporting this morning that the Spurs are amongst three teams who have offered Pargo a contract. The Spurs are apparently the low end of the pay scale, but have made the offer. Here’s the link:
http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/archives/2008/08/jeff_mcdonald_s_13.html
Caveats:
1. It’s Jeff McDonald, so who knows if it’s really true?
2. It’s one of those ‘word around the league’ things, so who knows who the original source was?
3. The Hornets are out of the mix to resign Pargo (and thus, just made their team better).
This is one of those few times when I wish Pop/RC were not so CIA. If RC were John Paxson, he’d issue a press release stating that the Spurs had not offered Pargo a deal and no move was pending. Of course, if RC was John Paxson, we’d also suck every year and have 0 rings.

"True" Hoop?
Am I missing something?? The points are good, though it’s pretty much an exact representation of PtR’s feelings, but they’re indicating that Pargo is already a SPUR.

At this very second...
Just know that somewhere on a deck in the mountains of Colorado, there’s a guy who resembles Leonard Smalls who’s had a shitty week and is raising his glass high in the air and toasting a hairy little man in Austin, TX named ‘THATS.’
by SgtinManusArmy on Aug 8, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
and I am raising my bottle. I’m not sophisticated enough to drink out of a glass.
I’m not denying it, but how did you know I was hairy and little?
Btw, I thought for a bit that the True Hoop poster Tim might be VWolf, but he went with Chalmers, Arthur, and CDR instead of Greene, Giddens, and CDR. Do you think VWolf has a twin?
by Wayne Vore (ATS) on Aug 8, 2008 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Weeeeellllll, by “glass” I’m of course referring to the substance by which Jameson bottles are made. When you’re alone on a Friday night and drinking on the deck, the class and sophistication that drinking from an actual beverage receptacle brings flies right out the window.
I actually thought the same thing, but not hearing that we passed on the VWolf Trio several times in five sentences kinda clued me in as well.

BTW did you know that the Spurs passed on...
Damn. I only try to say it when people ask for it.
Chalmers would have been better than Hill, but I still wasn’t really down with that pick. Arthur would have been pretty good, but he seems a lot like Gist who we stole late.
OK I promise not to bring up my trio again until they are doing some damage in the NBA while Georgie boy rides the pine or whoops it up in the D-league.

The sad thing is, when CDR, Giddens AND Greene are ALL doing better than George Mason, who in 6 months is either lighting up the D-League 4th Team All-Stars or learning to speak Lithuanian….. I’ll be beating you to bringing it up.

So, who’ll ‘fess up to being the infamous TrueHoop reader “Tim”? He’s gotta be a PtR guy. His points make logical sense and there actually decent grammar. Let’s start a pool to see who this “Tim” might be.
