Um... not good. (Arg-USA blog)
It's 21-4 U.S. with a little more than a couple minutes to go in the quarter. They're on a 18-0 run as we speak with LeBron FTs pending. Manu already has two fouls and looks to have tweaked his ankle. Argentina cannot go two consecutive possessions without a turnover and their point guard, Prigioni, looks hopelessly outmatched.
Oh wait, the quarter is over now and it's 30-12, and that's with Nocioni hitting a running one-handed three at the buzzer. Everything that can go wrong for Argentina has. The U.S. already made like five threes and even when they missed one, it was an airball that went straight to Bosh for an and-1. Meanwhile on offense Argentina is missing all their shots, even lay-ups and putbacks.
In other words, just go back to bed.
Hopefully Manu isn't hurt too bad.

i chimed in on the go argentina fan post with my own wailing about this situation. not good at all. it was murphy’s quarter for ARG and maybe the spurs as well (bends to knees and begins prayer).

Slowly the Argentina strategy of letting the U.S. shoot threes is getting them back into the game. Really, there is nothing else they could do.

Scola is playing like a beast and Gutierrez and Quinterros are stepping up huge. It’s only a 6 pt game, with 2 seconds to go. Again, Manu is hurt and Delfino is doing nothing.

49-40 at half.
Three bs Anthony FTs take it from 6 to 9.
They outscored the U.S. that quarter. I’m not sure if anyone has done that this tournament thus far. The guys are playing hard and might even be better coached for all I know, but the talent differential is massive. If the U.S. just shoots threes the rest of the way and Argentina plays the way they’re playing, it might be a game in the 4th.
The real story will be Manu though. If he doesn’t come out for the second half, he’s done for the game and it’ll be panic time in Spurs land.

i think that china actually outscored team USA in the second quarter of that first preliminary game. team USA got outrscored in one quater so far in china. it could have been in that no-count game against australia before the actual games, but i think it happened when the chinese were bombing in all those 3s in the first game……..

Now that it's all over
I’m realizing that I wasn’t really cheering for the US or Argentina (not just in this game but for the whole tournament) at all. What I was wanting was for Manu to go through the whole Olympic tourney without any health issues. If you’re rating the outcomes on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being the most important and 10 being the least) — between US wins gold, Argentina wins gold and Manu healthy, I think it would have been:
1. Manu Healthy
10000000. US wins gold
10000001. Argentina wins gold
And now I know that I’ve lost.

Wow that sucked! My country lost in the worst way: with a “what if” scenario…… Manu MAKES a big difference.
Now its time to yell at my computer while Delfino jacks up three after three against the lithuanians….
BTW….. the difference between fans from Usa and Argentina is HUGE. We would never root against or country or be indiferent.

its tough sometimes when half of this blogs contributors have a man-crush on Manu. i love what USA stands for, but i rarely stand for what our politicians crap out of their mouths.
i love our athletes, but its hard to support anything with our standpoint, “democratic” and “republican” included. they both are pulled by the same strings with different ways to spout the same shit.
i really wish we’d focus on our own problems before we try and “police” the world. that is not our job even when countries (nigeria, just an example, etc.) expect us to fix their problems.
dont bother to flame, i wont respond if this offends you. i don’t troll for responses

It would be different, I think, if Americans weren’t so dominant in this particular sport. Being secure in the knowledge that you are the best in the world at something makes it easier to root for the underdogs. If the rest of the world progresses to where there really is some doubt, I guarantee that the percentage rooting against Team USA would drop. For example, Americans aren’t rooting for Chinese gymnasts or divers.
Also, Americans aren’t used to thinking in terms of national competitions. You root for your local high school teams. Then you sort of follow where the local stars go and root for them to do well in college. When you go to college, you follow where your team’s players get drafted, and pull a little bit for their professional teams. I like the Tennessee Titans, for example, because they have many former Texas Longhorn football players, like Vince Young and Bo Scaife. It’s a similar mindset that would lead to a Spurs fan rooting for Argentina because that’s who Manu plays for. Team Manu vs. Team Kobe, Lebron, and Carmelo? Viewed in that light, it’s no contest whom to root for. I would guess many American fans see Team USA as those individuals, rather than as a team representing the United States.

Thanks for the information tomasito, it’s nice to hear how things work in other countries.
And Hamer, you are right that here it seems there’s an obsession with Manu.
He is not perfect: he was a below average student when young. Fuck it, who cares about school…. MANU IS PERFECT

You don’t understand. Manu is such a team player and an unselfish individual that he early on realized that performing scholastically to his full potential would only raise the grading curve to impossible levels for his classmates. He then simply performed just well enough to get through school. It came out of his love for others and desire to self-sacrifice. We all know what he’s truly capable of and I for one am very excited to see, after retirement, the diseases he cures and the difficult mathmatical equations he effortlessly solves.

I’m so goddamned proud of my team. To me this bronze medal is golden. We had no business beating the US with that hobbling and benchless team, but they still gave me hope. And now they beat Lithuania without Gino and with Nocioni playing his heart off.
What a team. I’ll miss them when they’re gone so bad.

They're Warriors, You've Got To Give Them That.
Every passing game makes their Scola decision look all the more unforgiveable. The guy is a world-class player and would’ve made a huge difference on our team.
Tim-Manu-TP-Scola? That would’ve been insane. Imagine Barry with those four. Hell, imagine me with those four. Unfuckingbeatable.
I don’t know if it was Holt or RC or Pop, but the team blew it big time.
Also, it’s disappointing they’re not at least asking the Bulls what they want for Nocioni, just for shits and giggles.
The whole Argentine team played with a lot of heart and passion and I’m really proud of them. Even their fatty.
And lest I forget, major props to Spain as well, for the way they fought the U.S. without Calderon. I knew they were playing possum the first game in the group stages…

On the whole Scola thing
Is it too late for the Spurs to take a mulligan? I’m just saying…
