Spurs sign Tolliver
I hadn't noticed this talked about yet, but the Spurs have apparently signed Tolliver to a non-guaranteed contract. I liked his offense in the summer league, but you have to wonder if the Spurs saw a need for a 6'8"+ guy who can shoot from outside, but is not a great defender, why didn't they draft Donte Greene? Oh yeah, so we could get the highly coveted George Hill. Greene is definitely more athletic than Tolliver, and has the potential to become a defensive force, and more than just a spot up shooter on offense.
Greene averaged 22.6 points 1 block 1.6 steals, but a paltry 3.6 rebounds in summer league play (in 34 minutes).
Tolliver averaged 12.3 points 0 blocks 0 steals and 5 rebounds in summer league play (in 23 minutes).
Tolliver clearly has the edge in rebounding.

Tolliver is much heavier. He’s more of a 4 than a 3.
I did watch a little of a Houston summer league game and it showed both his upside and his downside. He can score. But he was an absolute dog on defense and on offense when he didn’t have the ball. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. He could be the next Josh Howard or the next Terrence Morris.

What an offseason
I cant remember being this uninspired by a Spurs offseason in a long time, if anything happens to manu or tony, game over.

so..
..you were INSPIRED by last year’s offseason? Ime Udoka? that was basically it..well, besides us trading away Scola for nothing..I think the only reason you think this (IMO) is b/c we didn’t win the ‘ship.

Tolliver had a couple good years with the San Diego Chargers. Glad to see him back at the proffesional level.

Not really a crush on Greene, but more a grudge against guys who cannot shoot (Boy George).
If Tolliver makes the roster it makes the fact that they ignored Greene somewhat questionable. Had they signed a super athletic 6’5” guy with a 7 foot wingspan who can rebound and defend like the devil (as well as score) I’d have questioned why they passed on Giddens.

Hill and Toliver
I think Hill has more upside than we’d like to admit, plus, you can tell the coaches are working him hard in the summer league stuff. As a few people have pointed out before, Duncan looked like crap during the summer league because the coaches challenged him to play uncomfortably. Greene looks good, but how many times has somebody looked great during the summer and turned into a complete loser during the real season.
I’m not sure what to think of Tolliver, but the fact that he was signed to a non-guaranteed contract makes me think that the Spurs aren’t 100 percent sure either.

Good points
But Duncan was the best player in the nation pretty much his entire time at Wake, so the summer league was inconsequential….whereas Hill comes from Acronym University and there is still a huge shadow of doubt over his ability and his draft position.

and hill was the primary scorer in school, as opposed to the primary ball handler. he is making a small adjustment there.

Could the Spurs sign a free agent so random that not even the guy himself expected to make the team? They’re getting there.
